Poll: A good time to buy a 645D ?

I've been looking at the 645D lately as well as the price is approaching affordability. Though I'm having a hard time rationalizing it with the A7R II about the same price and the ability to adapt my Canon glass. I still want the 645D, but I'm wondering if that's silly. Half of it would be to start accumulating 645 lenses, though for that day I can afford the Z!

I don't they they will abandon it anytime soon. As far as I know, it's a pretty big hit, especially in China.

Keep it pretty much the way it is. Full frame is just going to make the camera bigger. Besides, most shooters like it for street photography, where thin DOF isn't really wanted.

Weather sealing, better screen.

I love Pentax gear, but I find the notion that you can't take professional level wedding photos with Canon gear as a bit ridiculous.

I should have clarified: Canon Pro Services. I'm not a member, but the people I've talked to report pretty quick repairs. I have sent in Canon stuff without being on CPS and it was around two weeks and that includes shipping from and to Alaska. They're pretty good.

Pentax/Ricoh's repair service is unacceptable, and it's a serious problem for them if they want to market their cameras to professionals. That being said, even if you are shooting professionally with a bigger brand, you still need a backup camera in case it takes a dump on you in the middle of the shoot. It's still going to take a week to get a repair done.

In Pentax/Ricoh's case, you'd almost need two backup cameras as their repairs take so long.

Had the Ricoh GR for 1.5 mos and then it died unexpectedly at no fault of mine. Sent it in, had to foot the bill for shipping. Got it back 1.5 mos later. Pretty unacceptable. If Pentax/Rioch wants to keep their customers, they need to up their game.

I also have Canon gear. When that stuff goes bad and it's under warranty, they send me a prepaid shipping label and it takes two weeks, tops.

FA 31, 43 & 77 future upgrades ?

They will probably just re-release them with HD like the other limiteds. I imagine they will probably release some DFA WR primes with SDM to go with the new FF as well.

Though some things shouldn't be messed with....the DA15 SMC will probably hold value pretty well, for example, because it produces much nicer starbursts than the newer HD version.

K3 vs D750 some sample gallery

Would be good to see examples with equivalent focal lengths, apertures, and ISOs. However, I think it's clear that the D750 files show much less noise even at the lower ISOs. Not even a contest. Not really a huge surprise; 24MP FF vs. 24MP crop. Pentax rendering is also much more vivid in these. That's more of a personal preference thing.

Oh for sure, shallower DOF isn't necessarily a good thing. Depends on what you are shooting.

Interesting you should mention Fuji. They seem to be the rage right now in some circles; some people are even saying that they've out-Pentaxed Pentax with their small APS-C only small-ish primes. I recently tried an X-T1 with a 35 1.4 and 14 2.8 after a friend of mine really liked his--though he has not had it long. I can see the allure but it wasn't really for me. Perhaps I just needed to give it more time. It sure is a compact system and they are making faster primes to try to compete with FF to a point. But the flagship K series bodies from Pentax are certainly in a whole different league as far as build. The little X-T1 felt a little toyish in comparison. The body also put too many things in dials up top; I think the Pentax system is a little easier to use. Though some would argue the Fuji approach forces you to slow down a little. Well, whatever floats your boat, but I'd rather be able to make quick changes if needed.

Pentax Limiteds also feel a little better built IMO. A little more heft for the size. I still applaud Pentax with making small little primes. Though it would be nice to have some faster choices from Pentax in some cases. The later is the main approach by Fuji. I wish Pentax would make a 14 2.8 as good as the Fuji, though. Great lens.

Pentax also has the upward mobility of FF coming at some point, with some lenses already good to go. If Fuji plans on going to FF they are keeping it tight to their chests. None of their lenses are going to work on a bigger body.

Fuji also lacks a good 31, 43 and 77. :)

He certainly does good work. I'm not sure that I love his style, but it's good. He certainly has creative vision and the technical side down.

The X100 series is a fixed focal length and could hardly replace a whole kit (he notes this). I'm curious if he jumps ship over to a X100 series and something like a X-T1 or keeps the Pentax for other focal lengths.

Anyways, a good takeaway point is that APS-C is certainly capable.

Yes, if you are a DOF junkie. Also, if we are talking about OVFs, FF gives a much bigger size viewfinder.

$2500. Not that it's a figure I can afford, but anything lower than that probably insures build or specs will not be up to par.

Pentax K-3 II Officially Announced

On board flash is a trademark of consumer DSLRs. I'm not necessarily saying it shouldn't exist on pro level cameras, but that's the way it is. By omitting OBF and articulating screen, Pentax is sort of saying, hey, this is a pro machine, buy your own flash, and durability is more important than a moving screen. It's definitely a calculated move; I'm guessing a brand image thing. To be honest, though, if I had to chose, I'd probably take OBF over GPS, but really I could care less about both. Wifi, though, is useful to me. But not a dealbreaker.

Pentax K-3 II Officially Announced

I'd say things are looking pretty good for Pentax FF, provided they incorporate IBIS into the body. They better; it's a significant plus to the brand. While I'm not necessarily a huge fan of the Sigma Arts (they are a little too clinical for my liking) they do help fill some of the fast, full frame capable, holes in Pentax's lens lineup, which is currently the big stumbling block. Shooting a Sigma 35 1.4 with 4+ stop IBIS on a Pentax FF body would be pretty damn sweet.

That being said, I'm currently looking to possibly return to the Pentax brand, partially to reduce the size of my kit (currently shoot with a 5D3). I tried a X-T1 and it didn't really do it for me. Build and usability paled in comparison to my experience with Pentax's flagship APS-C cameras. Pentax/Ricoh are finally upping their game with the K3/K3 II. I like cameras I feel like I can hammer nails with. I'm thinking of bouncing down to APS-C with some nice FA limiteds and then jumping back up to FF Pentax. But I dunno, the K3 II is looking good, I might not even feel the need to go back to a larger format. I do wish they would have used the sensor in the D7200, though. But I'm rambling...

Lens for LX and K5

I think it might be the FA43 for win here. Normal focal length on full frame, slight tele on a K5 with AF ability. The limited goodness. Hopefully a "one lens" solution as a walkaround prime on a 35mm body. Can anyone comment on how it is to use this lens for manual focus work? The ring looks pretty small.

50 and 28 is good. 2.8 is fine on a wide angle. Mostly just looking for something faster than f/2 for the 50.

Lens for LX and K5

I'm looking to make a little jump back into the Pentax world (shoot Canon FF digital) mostly for film shooting on a LX. I was thinking it might be nice to get a prime around 35-50mm that would also work on my mom's K5, which I have access to and is a stellar little DSLR. The FA31 is the elephant in the room, as it would work on both types and it's been on the list for a long time. It's over budget, however. The FA35 doesn't have the aperture ring, so that wouldn't work on the older cameras. Perhaps I just need to concentrate on some older manual focus glass in the 35-50mm category. I want solid optics, ideally faster than f/2. Let's keep it under $500. Thanks for your advice.

Downgrade from D800 to K5?

Good points. I've looked into moving to small primes with the 800 but I keep thinking about the limiteds.

I think part of it too is that I'll be sending in my 24-70 for warranty work after 4 months of ownership. The 16-35 I had was defective as well, so I think I'm just sick of Nikon and wanting a brand switch to be completely honest. $1k+ equipment should hold up a little better IMO.

My foray into Nikon has left me pretty unimpressed with the platform as their quality control, etc. sucks. I just don't really want to give them any more of my money. I had issues with the 16-35 and 24-70, which is just ridiculous. I'd rather move back to Pentax or Canon. I just don't find Nikons that comfortable to hold either. I like the grip on the K5 and 5D series. The K5 IIs looks like a sweet camera.

I actually sold my K5 to my mom, who then leant it to me as a backup camera while I'm working down here in CA for a bit. So I might just get the limiteds and use the K5 until the K3 or whatever comes down the pipe. She's super busy with work and doesn't have any time for photography in the next 6 mos.

Well, i was being a little simplistic with my description. I use a Black Rapids RS77, so it's not really around my neck per se.

I can't afford two camera systems.
