Isn't the most important issue ensuring the lens/body are positioned so that the centre of gravity is directly over the centre of the main axis of the head?

None of them are sharp. Have you set the lens up using AF Adjust?

In any event, even using AF Adjust the critical focus point may/will vary depending on the fl youve zoomed to.

Search for advice on using AF Adjust.

Surely it would make more sense to just dispose of it? No point in keeping on using something you can't trust.

The questions I raised are to help eliminate the various factors that might be causing the problem. You need to work through all the possibilities, then whatever is left is the answer!

Have you calibrated the lens using the AF Fine Adjustment?

Have you tried shooting the same scenes using Live View?

Have you tried the same scenes with the camera on a tripod? (You say you don't want to discuss tripods, but are any shots better with a tripod? Please post them here)

Have you tried the same scenes doing any of the above with lower ISO?

You need to ensure you eliminate possible bad technique, non-optimum settings, etc. especially if shooting hand-held.

Lens hood size for Pentax X-5?
Posted By JohnX

Won't work I'm afraid.

The end of the lens itself has no provision for a hood to be attached, even a clip-on.

If the hood could attach to the body, and again, there's no provision for it, the hood would quickly be ineffective, as the lens moves outward about 1.5" when zoomed, i.e. the front element would be beyond the end of a hood.

I've found, when caught without a hood for some reason, a judiciously positioned hand, newspaper, etc, (outside the framed shot of course), can help prevent flare.

The 50-135 is a great lens, but is slow to focus.

What were the models doing when you shot? You said 'The models were to quick' which suggests possibly fast movement?

Upgrading my K-5 [K-3ii or KP]?

Not saying the KP isn't good; just not Pentax's top APS-C model. The ergonomics of the top models are, in my view, superior.

As to pixel shift not being in the K3II, mine definitely has it.

The K3II is in the same customer segment as your K5, i.e. top APS-C. The KP isn't.

She might not realise that this lens zooms and focuses internally. It needs to be mounted on a body to determine if there really is a problem.

Sorry. You can't extrapolate a single bad experience into a 'therefore it's all bad' statement.

Stuff happens. No matter how well made or expensive something is, someone will always find something that isn't quite right.

The lens you refer to is consumer grade, i.e. built to a price. You get what you pay for.

Copy what you wrote on DPR here so we can understand more.

Try a DA* or Limited lens, then come back and tell us if Pentax is still rubbish.

K10D and the new HD Pentax-FA 35mm f/2

Back or front focus is the result of combining the tolerances in a camera body and a lens, which is why it changes depending on the body/lens combo. The K10D is not the culprit on its own.

Lens caps and hoods.

You'll need to buy 77mm caps, and, if you use a lens hood you'll find that because of its much larger size a 77mm hood won't be very effective, if at all, on, say, a 49mm lens.

The small desiccant packs have a very short working life, insofar as you need to remove the moisture from them once they are 'full', so if you're not doing that on a regular basis they're next to useless. You need to know the dry weight, and then dry them out once they've increased weight by around 40%.
