To be honest, unless you have a particular reason for wanting the spotmatic, for functional purposes I'd be more inclined to get something like a K1000 which should be younger and cheaper and more functional. The spotmatic is an iconic camera and can command a premium price as well as being an early and therefore less efficient incorporator of metering. A lovely thing but not necessarily the best tool.

I seem to remember when the K-1 came out there was a very enthusiastic Chinese review on YouTube - consolidating Ricoh's strength in their own corner of the globe looks like good business to me - and if Pentax got to be cool in China it would be very very good business :)

Interesting - I love PP - film was so often disappointing in not being able to render things the way I saw them - always having to conceive film images in the way film would make them look rather than necessarily how I wanted them to look - and yes, I know that's a mixed blessing - it's such a powerful tool that it's easy to get horrible results -- but if you have a specific idea in mind when you make the exposure about how you want the image to look - even if that's simply as true as possible to life - then PP opens up so many more possibilities and involves fewer manipulations at the time of exposure. Mind you, I did shoot mostly transparency film.

I think it's the investment in lenses as much as anything - the FF 600, 250-600 and even prime 400 and 300 disappeared from the line-up long ago and comparable APS-C lenses were never made ( with the 'exception' of the 560mm) - the investment in sports/wildlife oriented cameras might not be deemed worth it without the lenses such shooters would want - not that that stopped Sony with the A9, of course :)

yes that's true, but if you are in any sense in competition with others either entering competitions or just selling images to magazines or as prints - or even posting your work on Flickr or Instagram, if somebody else's system is superior to yours in some way - and AF is what we're talking about, though buffer size is also relevant - all other things being equal, they will have an advantage - not an insurmountable one, but one the means that they have to put less effort into one area of the photographic process than you do, and maybe more frequently catch moments that you miss - and that adds up.

Here's another from my jaunt up The Smoke - handheld, and slightly underexposed (by the meter) to stop the lights burning out - so ISO 1600, but the K-1 handles the ISO and boosting the shadows in LR well

I think you're right there - the AF was never the best on the K-3, but nobody was doing D500 quality AF back then - and 8.3fps was right up there- combine that with the weather sealing (which was ahead of the opposition) and it was a respectable wildlife camera, apart from a more limited modern lens and adaptor selection.

I don't know if it was just because it was my first camera, but the ME Super is the only one of those that have succumbed to the abuse I hand out* that I miss :( great little camera :)

*not really actually, it just fell in a stream when I slipped on a rock and seized up some months later, despite my efforts to get it dry.

The three knee-jerk sticks (if such a thing exists) that reviewers beat Pentax with are video, AF and lens availability, and it would be nice to think that if these were sorted out reviews would all glow. It would be nice, but experience and observation (not just of Pentax) suggest that other things would be looked for - the only difference is that there would be a grace period where there wasn't a lazy consensus about what the problems are.

They seemed a bit tentative about MF in the Photokina interview - to my mind it would be a terrible shame if they abandoned MF, though - not only did the 645Z sell well, but back in the day, of course, they were inique in offering 2 MF systems alongside 35mm, and the 67 was a pioneer in adopting a 35mm form factor for larger formats. MF was where their pro credibility was based. It is clear, however, that the 'cheap' crop 645 market is getting crowded - possibly partly as a result of the 'cheap' 645Z - so perhaps monitoring the market, as they said in the interview, is precisely what they need to do.
