It looks like a Grumman Ag-cat on floats...

We used to see Ag-cats flying here for many years (until recently) and I know them very well. The engine sound of these small biplanes is real music! :-)

Suggestion of place for a nice non-tourist Tokyo tower short (if you come here),
Sunset to night is the best timing, so go with your mid to large steady tripod. Mini tripod won’t work. Cars will run left and right. And if it possible, go with a DA15 for kickass starburst!

Macro Best lens focal length for extension tubes?

Chaos_Realm is correct. More specifically (vis-a-vis amount of extension):

-- Adding 100 mm extension to a 100mm FL lens (set to infinity) gives a magnification of 1.0, while only 50mm extension is need with a 50 mm FL lens to get magnification of 1.0.

-- If you add 1/2 the FL in extension you get magnification of 1/2 (0.5) and adding twice the FL in extension you get magnification of 2.0. And so forth.

Me and a friend went looking for a hut somewhere in the Pemberton area of BC, Canada. We could not find it, and we ended up having to camp outside. My friend decided to make camp within the trees, but I opted to camp out on a frozen lake. A middle-of-the-night bathroom break got me out of the tent, and before I got back in I realized the phenomenal sight I was witnessing. I sat for a while, just staring, when I decided I would try and capture the scene as best I could. My hope is that, with this photo, I am able to convey what I was feeling that night.

There I was walking outside , when I spied a dragon fly !
I rushed inside and grabbed the K50 ( My ready to rock and roll Macro Rig ) and started snapping ...

Well , it looks like the Dragon Fly was in no rush to go anywhere . Perhaps Mother Nature was giving me a Christmas present ? ( Perhaps )
So I present my first Dragon Fly :

Someone described the camera as a bit like the K-x crossed with the K-01, with a touch of K3 (the interface also borrows from the GR, I've read).

So of course it can ... new adopters will see what their phones couldn't do.

Beautiful shot.
Norway is a great place for photography, at least in summer. :) I've enjoyed my time there last year, but I wish I had less family obligations and more time to roam the countryside and take photos.

International Language Settings on K-3

I opened my K-3 in Debug Mode. Changed the Region Setting from 01 to 02 and got only English and three asian languages. Set it back to 01 and I now got the possibility to set Swedish again.

Do almost as stated below: Enter Debug Mode, DO NOT REMOVE THE FILES as stated below. Turn camera off and On again.
Choose Region 01 and press OK, open the menu and Wrench 1 and check the languages avalible. Choose your language.

Turn the camera off, remove the files. Turn on and go to "secret menu" where you can disable the Debug Mode.

Turn off and on again. The Debug Mode should have been turned off and you will not see the text "Debug Mode" on the LCD (The LCD needs to be turned on to show the text)

and you will not see the secret menu anymore.

I have tested setting Region 00, 01, 02 and 03.

The K-3 Debug Mode

This is how you enter:

Create 2 files in the root of SD card (Make sure your computer shows the file endings, i.e .txt, .PEF, . JPG etc)

Open and add the text [OPEN_DEBUG_MENU] to the first file.

Insert the SD card in slot 1 and turn on the camera without closing the card door.

Enable Debug Mode and press OK. You can now remove the files.

In the Menus, before the C1-menu, you now will find a hidden menu.

Deserve a lens?
Not a chance!
For a chance is all anyone “deserves”.
But with a new prime, one must take his time,
foot zooming to frame it just so.
Composing the scene, the photo is the thing.
Capturing a smile, a tear, a wrinkle, a nod.
The depth and shadows of light – just right.
A fraction of a second, the image is seized,
a moment can now be retrieved!
What are the stories the lens will have told,
when it’s no longer in its prime?
“He took a chance, and images preserved are all he deserved on this dime.”

The photo is of friends and parents of the groom (oldest and only son) - my 3rd day using new camera. Rooftop wedding was moved into bank vault in basement due to foul weather. Low ceiling with hot spot lighting made it tricky. This was shot from 4 rows back and also represents first efforts with some post processing to balance the lighting....

Hello everyone!

I have been into photography as a hobby since high school, when i purchased a Pentax MG. My current kit includes a pentax k-30 with the DA L 18-55 kit lens, an old tamron 23a 60 - 300mm, and the old kit lens for the MG (Pentax-M 50mm f2). I would love to be able to win the DA50 and see what a modern prime lens is capable of. About 4 years ago my fiance had a workplace accident. Due to the accident she developed something called Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. I wont go into the details of CRPS, but if you are interested you can find more information Here. After the accident expenses for hobbies like my photography are very low priority as we are now reliant on my income alone. This means that new equipment for me is generally used 35mm equipment that i pick up.

The photograph i chose for this competition is of our dog Xeno. She is a 6 month old Siberian Husky. This is one of my favorite photographs because i feel it captures the excitement she has. Everything we do feels new and exciting for her, even just going for a walk. The ironic part of this picture is there was no setup. Usually when I'm out with my camera i am always thinking about things like exposure, rule of thirds, leading lines, background, ect. Then after i am looking through the shots on the camera to see what is working and what needs to be changed. For this picture i just picked up the camera, took the shot, and went back to playing with the dog. I was shocked at how well it came out considering i just snapped the picture to remember a good day.

Howdy! This is my first post so if I win this lens it will set my expectations unrealistically high in regards to rewards based behavior. I can live with that.
I'm 57 and have had a camera of some kind all my life. Sadly, it wasn't until about a year ago that I got interested enough to learn the relationship between
aperture and shutter speed. Old dogs and new tricks not withstanding, I got lit up when I found the National Geographic Your Shot forum. Now I can tell
you that no African Big Game hunter has been more excited to stalk his/her prey than I have been trying to capture the damn hummingbird in my back yard....
Since that forum is populated predominantly with Canon and Nikon I was pretty jacked to find the Pentax Forum. This sited allowed me to gather enough
information to make an informed purchase of a K-3 body from Idaho Camera and a DA 55-300mm WR from Amazon. From the olden days I have a 50mm
and a 135mm prime lens that must be around 45 years old. Now, I probably don't deserve a new 50mm prime but I would love to explore the difference of
a prime lens that was manufactured this century and with a digital camera in mind. The attached image is taken with my legacy 50mm on a homemade light
table. (240 words.....I think)

Pentax DA 50 mm f1.8

Why would I like to receive this DA 50mm f1.8 lens? I love portraits and so I´d love to enjoy the shallow depth of field this lens is able to reach. I´ve also read about it´s great bokeh, it´s sharpness and it´s good color rendition.
I own a Pentax 18-55 kit lens, a Sigma 70-300 and a Tamron 28-75. My only fixed focal lens is a Samyang 8mm (which is pretty good for landscapes, for taking pictures inside of great buildings and that I even use for some spectacular portraits, as the one you can see in the picture I´m uploading with this note).
I promise I´ll make a good use of this Pentax 50 mm little jewel.

a) Well, I don't "deserve" the lens. As you all can see, I'm not a good photographer, I'm a beginner with a great passion. I've got a DSLR after years I wanted to buy it but I never had enough money. I'm taking part to this challenge because is a great opportunity to have a beautiful lens to use together with my 18-55 WR from the kit.

b) If I'd answered the phone... Single shot long exposure - ISO 100 - 21.25 mm - f29 - 20sec.

To be sure I would like to win the DA 50mm prime lens offered by Larry aka crewl1. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have always had a camera, from a childhood Brownie Starlite and a 620 Box camera, to my father’s old 35mm Minolta. My 30 plus year love affair with Pentax begin in 1979 with a used K-1000 sold to me by a police officer friend after my Exa 35mm was stolen from my motel room at a major horse show. I upgraded the K-1000 to an SF10 and SF7 with zoom lens’. In 2005 I made the leap to Digital with the new istDS.(Since re-homed to a High School/College student with two lens for her photography classes) I have upgraded my DSLRs every two to three years to the K-30 and this June 2014 to the K-3.
I have never had a prime lens except the original lens on the K-1000, now a keepsake. I do have a Optio-90 WR as a“pocket”camera in my purse so as to always have a "real" camera with me. (I don’t have a Smartphone or I-pad/phone.)
This contest is a opportunity to get started with a prime lens. All of the reviews indicate that there is a lot of fun and innovation to be had with a small prime lens like the DA 50mm. I do realize there are some areas where a zoom lens is just not the thing; so this is an opening to learn a new photographic perspective, thanks to Larry aka crewl1.
Photo submitted was taken with the K-30 and my 18-135mmWR lens over Christmas, 2013.

FYI: this photograph just went Best of Show in a small County show in New Mexico.

I lost my job 31st July 2013, thinking I will be able to get a second job soon. I bought the Pentax in August the following month. It has been one year and I am broke. Contemplating to sell my camera for long now. Since this contest came out the idea to turn into professional photographer has come into my mind. If I win this lens I will turn to full time photography. I will let my 12 year old career in IT and Telecom disappear in thin air.

So winning this lens would actually decide if I enter photography as a career or not. I am attaching a picture which I recently took. Photography is my passion and after watching all the YouTube videos. Countless hours of discussion and reading Pentax Forums; watching movies like Baraka, Samsara, Chronos and Planet Earth (BBC series). I would really like to do something like that in life. It will be a dream come true.

Even if I don't win this contest I would try and keep my Pentax K-5 II for as long as I can. If I go silent on this forum, you would know, what happened. :) (189 words)

Pentax 50mm Lens Giveaway

Hello Fellow Members
Yes, I am still alive n kicking busy shooting with my trusty Pentax, not to mention the constant praise and thumbs-up I give to all other Pentax users and thumbs-down to those, retail shops & users especially, where Canon;) and Nikon:hmm: seem to dominate and carry on about their product.. And there is nothing worse, when shopping for Pentax gear, to hear the words......' Sorry, but we do not have much in the way of Pentax, but we can order it in'. Grrrrrrrr:mad:
At least Pentax has one over Canon & Nikon, they do not have the vertical/horizontal picture view when rotating the camera, after a shot is taken. And their bodies are no where near as strongly built to last as Pentax which is a proven fact.
Crykeeeee! (aussie slang) I own a Pentax K-7, K-5iis, recently acquired K-3, my old film MZ50 (still going strong) and I am bloody proud as punch of all. That includes numerous Pentax and 3rd party lenses.
Hey, do not get me wrong...I respect and accept non Pentax users...but at the end of the day my loyalty rests with PENTAX (obviously its Ricoh now).
Anyway, lets get back on track. The reason for this essay in order to win this Pentax DA 50mm f1.8, is because, ...I do not have one.
I do have an older Sigma 50mm f1.4, but planning to sell it, as its quality does not meet my expectations. And to own a Pentax 50mm prime could just about complete my collection, which includes lots n lots of better quality portrait pics of my well as my wife of course:)
So therefor I shall submit my photo taken in the Pilbarra region called Yandicoogina, where a company RioTinto (who I work for) is mining for Iron Ore and where its surrounds can sometimes be quite breathtaking. This time thou, I decided to enter a photo, which is a panoramic view looking down into a pit which was formerly excavated and is now a haven for some of the outback wildlife, ....but soon to be refilled and never seen again.
I do hope, win or lose, that this rare view gives some people an insight of an extraordinary view on 'Landscape'.
Please enjoy its nature!

I have to be honest and say I doubt I am worthy of winning this lens. I have hardly posted anything in this forum since joining, so for me to enter this makes me feel bit of a fraud. However after saying that, here I am entering the competition in the hope of winning a lens I'll probably never own.

My humble K20 may not do it justice, although I'd give it a damn good try :) and maybe, just maybe, one day I'll get a nice K3 or whatever new camera is on offer to give the lens a new lease of life

To comply with the rules, it was a tossup between the picture below and one of a duck............the duck lost.

I'm Ghia and here is my kx’s story. I got my kx as my first DSLR camera from my grandmother when I was 23 in 2010; my Mom is a big fan of it. She has been using only for all her life and recommended it to me. I have been using it and I really like it. But then everything changed, in March this year I went to the Gold Coast with my friends and we were taking photo on the beach with tripod; suddenly, a big wave came and knocked the tripod and my kx down to the seawater. At that moment my friend was taking me a picture; so he unintentionally let go off the tripod to protect himself from the wave and it then killed my loved kx. I didn’t blame him because it was an accident and I know him; he is one of my best friends. He offered me money but I couldn’t take it. I sent my kx to the Pentax and they said that it will cost $1000 to fix it which is not worth it. My grandmother paid around 900 for it. I decided not fix it at this time because there are many better new models but I still want to get it fixed and make it become alive again because it was the last gift from my grandmother before she passed away last year.

I'm doing a part-time job at the moment to buy a new k3 and also looking for a new portrait lens since my old Pentax SMC 55mm F1.8 broke too.

It will be wonderful for me If I can get this 50mm I can save money to buy something else like a grip or other lens.

Thank you

Rest in Peace my 55mm f1.8

I have dedicated myself to taking some good pictures of my seven grandchildren; it’s just that these pics were never good enough using a point-and-shoot. So… I took the plunge and after considerable research, decided to obtain a DSLR and settled on a K-3. I now suspect it will take me many months and thousands of dedicated pictures to hone my new hobby. I am using the 18-135mm lens and would love to have a prime lens to improve my portraiture. I am attaching a K-3 picture of one of my grandkids (Skylar) for your evaluation. Thanks…

My age is 62, I'm unemployed and just an eye glaucoma diagnose me so do not know how long I can keep taking pictures.
I have no money to buy a quality lens and would like to have it to enjoy this hobby that helps me pass the time and feel that I am good for something more than being unemployed. :(
I've done fotosgrafías with Tamron 90 macro because a friend lent me a few days. I let a shot taken with this lens and the Pentax K10D :)
