Might be picking up a Pentax again

Well, the K-5 worked fine for a bit, then crapped its pants right before I was heading out on a two week Italy trip (which is the main reason I bought it). Ended up bringing the (ever reliable) M9 + a bag of lenses instead, and living with the limitations (though I got a lot of nice shots!). The K-5 appears to suffer the floppy mirror issue so will see if it's even worth repairing considering repair costs here in Sweden. Not very pleased, but such is life.

Oh yeah, I love it when people think it's reasonable with say a 30% discount off what they paid for their DSLR 6-7 years ago :) Saw an ad the other day where someone wanted around 800 USD for an Olympus E520 body ("It cost me almost twice that new!").

Yeah, I thought it seemed nice since people generally want 400-500 USD for a K5 body alone around here (and refuse to budge on price). I miss living in the US where prices were more reasonable, over here everyone wants a premium for their stuff and then you see the same ad sitting there for months and months... go figure!

Just thought I'd report back in! Sat and looked at pictures and read reviews for a few days and finally settled on a lightly used K-5 being the best bang for the buck for me. Found one for sale (silver edition, the v2 that doesn't have the upgrades) here in Sweden for 3500 SEK (400 USD) including the DA 35/2.4, Takumar 55/1.8 and a Helios 44M. Supposedly 2250 shutter count on the body. People tend to ask way too much for (and subsequently never sell) their used Pentax gear over here, but this felt like a pretty decent deal by any standards. Should get it in the mail next week.

Well, a silver K-5 is on the way now. Found one here in Sweden for 3500 SEK (around 400 USD) including the 35/2.4 and a couple older lenses, with 2200 exposures. Seemed like a nice enough deal!

Thanks for all the replies. It really looks like either a K-50, K-30, K-S2, K-5 or K-3 will more than satisfy my needs, so will just find the best deal on one. There's a K-50 + 18-135 for around 410GBP brand new I am looking at which is tempting me. :-)

Shutter noise isn't a major concern so no worries there. The K-S2 looks interesting (and yeah, the screen is nice), but I can get a K-50 + 18-135 for less than a K-S2 body alone around here... the K-S2 is available only with the 18-50 from what I can see and that lens isn't getting a lot of praise (and it really is too short of a range for me).

Hello,

Going to go back to shooting some Pentax after a loooooong hiatus (though I am keeping some specialized Canon gear as well as my Leica stuff). Was tempted by the K-3 and K-3II but have now spent a couple of days reading up on what Pentax have been up to since my departure. And to be honest, I don't see what I would miss out on with a K-50. The main intent of this camera is to replace a Sony RX10 (which is technically competent but I hate shooting with) as a "general purpose" camera for travel, some family/kids photos, ebay auction shots and other things my other gear isn't well suited to. Looking at the K-50 vs the K-5 or K-3 it looks like I still get weather sealing, Astrotrac support (though the K-3 II will work without the external GPS), shake reduction etc. Sure, the K-3 has more capable autofocus, but I have a 7D+500L for birding and that's really the only shooting I do that puts high demand on AF performance.

So looking at maybe picking up a K50 + 18-135 kit since they are very affordable. The sensor looks excellent (same as K-5 II right?), it has the dual controls and all the other stuff I'd want.

Any reason why I should fork out more for a K-3 II? The price difference would be around 5000 SEK for the K-50+18-135 vs 9000 SEK or so for K-3 II + the same lens. Since I want a one lens setup for most shooting (might add a fast 35/50 equiv down the road) the 18-135 seems to be the ticket.

Cheers!

I've gathered as much and besides the lens itself is why I am keeping my 7D+500L for birding. The 7D is getting old now but still performs admirably and I can rarely blame a missed shot on it.

Put in an offer on a K-3 for sale locally so we shall see if something materializes. The 18-135 looks like a killer "general purpose" lens since it's got a good range and weather resistance, so will probably go with that for starters. Maybe a 35mm or 50mm equiv down the road, but since I have a full lens setup for my M9 (21/35/50/90) there's no urgency. Just looking for something capable and enjoyable for travel, kid photos etc where the M9 doesn't shine.

Hej! Ser att även Fotokungen har dem, t.o.m. lite billigare (6790). Lutar mot en beg K-3 dock, de ligger bra till prismässigt...

Hello all,

Been gone for a while (and didn't really post much of value before heading out as I'd gone to the dark side), but decided to perhaps dip a toe into Lake Pentax once again. Left for Canon years back mainly due to the at the time significant differences in tracking autofocus performance (I like birds/wildlife and it was hard to beat Canon/Nikon). It looks like Pentax has improved quite a bit since in that area.

The past few years have seen me mostly using a 7d+500L for birding, 5d2 + various lenses for almost everything else. But about a year ago I picked up a Leica M8 on a whim, and now I have a decent M9 setup that is my favorite tool in the world. The 5d2 left along with most lenses, though the 7d and 500 remain since they make an outstanding wildlife/birding setup. However I wanted a suitable "jack of most trades" camera, and spent some time shopping around for one. Settled on a Sony RX10 since it seemed to push all the right buttons, but once I had and used it I realized I still don't quite get along with electronic viewfinders no matter how good they are.

So, decided to see what Pentax was up to these days, and spotted the K-5 and K-3 as being seriously nice deals today. Strongly considering getting one with an 18-135 for a solid, weather resistant travel buddy, where I can get autofocus, solid high ISO performance and overall flexibility, something my M9 (lovely as it is) is lacking.

Anyway, wanted to say hello (again) and I'll post once I acquire a K-5 or K-3. :)

Some comments:
The "self winding" system is known as an automatic mechanical watch. It uses a pendulum of sorts (weight that spins around) to wind the mainspring.
"Eco drive" is solar powered and is something Citizen came up with.
Seiko uses something called "kinetic" which is a system that charges the battery via movement similar to the automatic mechanical movements.
The amount of energy generated is nowhere near sufficient to charge something like a smart watch. Remember a typical quartz watch runs for years off a tiny battery so does not require much in the way of power.

There have been Ricoh made watches around for quite some time. If I recall correctly they also had a brief fling with Hamilton back in the 60s/70s doing some joint development.

I have a Ricoh from the 1970s, nice little auto that keeps time well and has quite the vintage look. Sorry I don't have a better shot of it handy.

Crappy iphone shot, but here it is. Didn't like the rubber it came on, so stuck it on a Nato for a bit and then ordered a Watchadoo bracelet. Much improved.

For fifty bucks, don't waste it on a department store refractor. Even though the optics _may_ be passable, the mounts they come with make them completely unusable.

At that price range, get a Celestron Firstscope (found one for 29 bucks at Fry's a while back) and a better eyepiece in the 25-30mm range. That is actually a useful tool and works great for beginners.

At least it's a nice case, though my 500/4 came with a "free" one.

And you think 700 bucks for a case is bad, check the prices on replacement hoods for the superteles!

Please know what you are talking about before offering advice to someone considering a purchase.

The 1Ds is full frame and the fps rate is quite unimpressive.

The 1D is a 1.3x crop 4MP camera with high fps rate.

Right, because nothing bad happens elsewhere.

Remember the 2005 London bombings?
The theater hostage crisis in Moscow?
The Madrid bombs?
The 23 kids stabbed in an attack in China a few months back?
Hell, we even had a suicide bomber here in Sweden not long ago.

Grow up, the world is a rough place, not just in America.
