Low-light focusing: Why are some lenses better?

I will offer a bit of information that may or may not relate to the problem but seems relevant. I have had a couple of conversions where the SDM was not dead but focusing was unreliable. The lens would respond but not lock focus. Converting these from SDM to screw drive fixed the issue. Why? My assumption is that the SDM was not giving the level of precision that the focusing system needed and so it was not locking in perfectly. The screw drive provides more camera control and a different type of back and forth hunting even in lenses without problems focusing can behave slightly different on both systems. I wonder if the same is true of the low light use of these lenses - if the feedback given by the lens - the distance and precision traveled etc varies by brand. In any case that's all I can do to contribute as I don't own any of these other than the 16-50 screw drive converted.

Question on repairs to DA 17-70 SDM motors and 16-85 reliability

Honestly the 17-70 is a really nice lens - I wish the 16-85 had been a more direct replacement of the 17-70 which really is a fine lens.

Steve - in my case I am a subscriber and I can find info on the web that indicates up to 30 days of no connectivity before you lose features. However the links in that online web page go to adobe and on their pages I cannot locate the details. Adobe has a number of FAQ pages and details - including details on the new Lightroom CC vs. Lightroom Classic and how they work. Lightroom CC is what I was looking for a long time ago for use with Chromebook but now I'm not so sure. They recommend using one or the other not both and say that both will be available due to demand for the "foreseeable future" But that's not exactly comforting is it? LOL. As I indicated I tend to edit in DXO and only catalog in Light room so I may have to reconsider things.

There are other reasons but for this specific type of lens: Explaining Tilt-Shift Lenses and the Lensbaby Composer Pro ? Jake Hicks Photography

But the crop factor implications make this a very long telephoto which doesn't really seem the right target for this use.

Pentax.com - Website Information
Ricoh.com - Website Information

Ricoh should probably consolidate the websites under one owner from a corporate domain registration perspective.

The 17-70 I purchased two or more years ago refurbished (which I took to include SDM replacement) has never given any trouble. It is my niece's primary lens on her KS2. It is in fact her only lens and she uses it just about every day.

M39 adapter to Q is part of the adaptation. Looks like a neat bit but the focal length on the Q seems a bit long for what that is normally used for...

You are not confused. You are missing people who are saying "I don't have the bandwidth to upload and download my files to the cloud." Those are the people this comment was aimed at. Your point is real. But I again turn to film. When I wanted darkroom adjustments made to a print - I had to pay again or go into the darkroom which I either owned or rented. Digital tools are our darkroom - we pay for them - if bessler stopped making Enlargers and said I had to rent space from their corporate dark room I might have freaked out and switched brands - which is what people are saying. I have no frustration with that. I do however want to point out that these costs are so small in comparison to the costs born by photographers in the past that it is somewhat odd to see the passion around this.

If you use the classic version of CC you never upload files to the cloud - that offering is mostly misnamed. The subscription license server is on the internet and you software is distributed via download from the internet but nothing is running anywhere outside your computer other than the license check. Your files are stored where you want - on your own drive, on a cloud drive, etc.

The new offering may be useful for people who use chromebooks or other low cpu platforms if implemented correctly but higher bandwidth will be needed and only time will tell if this model is at all viable. Personally I think in well connected parts of the world it may well work reasonably but it will be a long time before it will supplant the first model listed above.

Your processed files are yours as are your negatives. They are not stored on the cloud. That's what confuses people. Two different models. The original (now classic) CC is a model where the software distribution and license checking is on a "cloud" and the software you run is local and so are your files ( you can store them anywhere you want actually ). The new model (not replacing the old model as I understand it ) allows a different model of storing your files online - but I can't say much about that model. I would not be interested in it. I also tend to do most of my processing in DXO and only use lightroom as a catalog - I should likely ditch adobe and get a different catalog software program. I have found I spend more on DXO yearly than I do on adobe BTW.

I find it interesting that $10 a month is too much in this hobby. Processing film was far more expensive especially on a per image basis. Let the flames rain down. Sigh.

I could be wrong but I think Adam was talking about the Classic/CC subscription vs. the Cloud Storage only subscription. The classic model leverages the same local storage and local process execution as the standalone product but requires a subscription. It provides the same performance and flexibility as a local stand alone product but comes with the subscription pricing.

I hesitate to say this. But if wildlife on a budget is your goal, I'd take a long hard look at the lenses available for each brand. I'd pay particular attention to Sigma's & Tamron's latest lenses that are not available in Pentax mount. The older Sigma's are readily found used for Pentax, but they aren't quite as long, and they aren't quite as well respected. Here's a round up of some telephoto zoom lenses you might use to research this further. The best super telephoto zoom lenses 2016 | TechRadar

I personally find myself heavily invested in Pentax and it is cheaper for me to spend money on a premium lens than to switch systems. The DFA 150-450 appears to be extrodinary... But beyond your budget.

Food for thought - often repeated in these type discussions:

Nikon's 'Worst' and 'Best' Zoom Lenses Compared

The truth is lighting, technique, photographer, etc. all make a huge difference but the lenses have much less of an impact. The faster and sharper lenses available help with edge cases when this is needed - but rarely are needed for MOST shots.

It makes us take stock of ourselves a little differently - it's a lot easier to lust after that great lens that makes that xyz photographer brilliant than to admit that he or she may just be better than we are.

The request for focal length is indicative of failure to communicate. If cleaning fails then send it back or try another body to be sure the lens is at fault.

I have had almost no luck with Ebay. The items are overly hyped and poorly documented - bad pictures, etc. I have returned a few items and kept a few but even the ones I kept felt like they didn't live up to the claims. The marketplace on this site has NEVER disappointed me.

It's important to note that for actual macro efforts you can use the manual focus macro lenses just as well if not easier.

I have had mixed results with international shipping. With Canada I think I have it worked out but shipment from the USA to OZ isn't cheap unless you have an aggregator that you trust. While I am happy to help - I'm not sure that your repair by the time shipping is taken into account would be cheaper than an SDM replacement locally.

As for conversion. If you can locate an older body capable of the work I can give a little assistance as can the threads on the forum. I'd start a thread asking for those in Oz who might have an older body to consider doing the conversion or loaning you the body. The model I use is a K100D (not super) but the K100D Super, the K10D (with older firmware) also work well. There are many other models that use an SD card boot method to enable the option and those are detailed in many threads.

Uh... didn't that office close? The story was it was closed and all people that were retained (if any) moved to NYC or NJ where Ricoh Imaging had an office already.
