Q Sitting on my shelf.

Three years ago at this time I was investigating purchasing a Q-7. By this date, then, I was down to finding solutions to several "issues" I had identified, including being able to see the screen in bright sun. I did purchase a Q-7 in December 2014; the picture below shows the two kits built about it.

The birding kit {above} has a Hoodman clone which attaches to the tripod mount on the camera.

The compact kit {below} has a collapsible Hoodman which I keep in place by friction between it and the camera,or by holding it somehow with fingers not otherwise in use.

The problem is, if you went through this thread, and others on the same general subject, you'd find all kinds of factors blamed for this issue.

DxO score for Pentax 645Z: 101!

Actually, they look at all three measures.

SNR >= 30 dB

DR >= 9 EV

CD >= 18 bits

Sports ISO is point where one or more of those test fails.

If they had officially published the 645Z scoring, then Nikon wouldn't have been to have their great "first at 100"party.

It seemed dumb to edit my comments two days later, so here is an addendum. Even after release of the mighty Nikon D850, the K-1 currently ranks fourth in what DxoMark calls their "Sports" ranking, This name seems to be misleading to most here - this ranking has nothing to do with AF or fps; instead this is the highest ISO setting where the camera produces that the DxOMark folk consider to be acceptable images, taking Dynamic Range, Color Depth, and noise into account. Thus all current Pentax products seem to be aimed at producing good images under the trying condition of low light. Personally, I think it is good that they seem to be aiming the entire product line down this path, because I believe that is where the future is.

DXO mark tests the Pentax K-1

Because of discussion elsewhere about the Nikon D850's score of 100, I spent some time today reading through DxOMark documentation. You have to understand what these tests mean, as sensor rankings only. "Landscape" is actually a test of dynamic range; this score is OK. "Sports" is actually a test of useable ISO, according to their idiosyncratic definition of "useable". I see the "Sports" score as fitting right in to where Pentax has been going lately, making cameras that gracefully handle higher ISO values. Incidentally, their documentation says that 5 overall points is comparable to 1/3-rd f-stop; the K-1 is just 4 points lower than the much more expensive D850, which is essentially a meaningless difference.

K30 to KP

I am thinking that way also - except I already consider the K-30 to be too chunky. However, I've had it for just 29 months now, and I've always considered a camera which served as my "primary" camera for less than 48 months to be a "failure", so I'm having trouble convincing myself to retire it so soon. And, no, I don't intend to the aperture issue to push me over {I really might have to consider it to be a a true failure then}. I'm running it off AA-batteries, and my bag has a couple of lenses with manual aperture-rings "just in case".

I don't know what you are complaining about. The three cameras released most recently by Pentax are a step in the right direction, for example. Although I wish it used a different aperture control mechanism, the K-70 will become an outstanding lead-in product over time. It and the KP are going exactly where the brand needs to be going in lower-priced APS-C cameras - providing really good images at what had been really high ISO levels. Every January, users show up on photography sites like this asking "How do a take pictures of my child/grandchild participating in indoor sports" ... and the person slinks away quietly when all the talk is of $2000+ constant f/2.8 telephoto lenses. In the future, that person will be told s/he can use the telephoto lens s/he already has; s/he simply needs to purchase a newer body - moving forward now with something in the cards eventually anyway - which can deliver high ISO values gracefully - and Pentax is already there!!

Maybe Ricoh believed what was being said here for the past few years. Maybe their primary interest was in keeping long-term users onboard by giving them a digital camera on which a 50mm lens acts like a 50mm lens; maybe they thought most purchasers would use legacy lenses they already had.

---------- Post added 10-04-17 at 10:16 PM ----------

The sports parent / grandparent market is one Pentax is already prepared to address, especially during indoor sports seasons, with the high ISO values provided by the K-70 / KP, but they would have to find some way to get their attention. Pentax must have had some reason to develop that capability; now we need to wait and see what, if anything, they do with it.

The word "archived" is much more important than the word "printed".
The disks of images I leave behind will take up much less space than any albums would.
They will last only if my daughters care.

No, if I were to purchase a K-1, I doubt if I would ever purchase another lens for under 20mm usage. Almost every time I mention that lens, somebody will respond "I love that lens".

8mm on APS-C is equivalent to 12mm on FF; 14mm isn't much narrower. I hardly ever use the 10mm setting, and most of the times I try it I end up narrowing a tad, so I can't image my ever pining for 12mm - but you can do whatever you want to do {however complaining gets old fast}

OK, so it would be better than I'm getting with my K-30 {which was the question I wasn't asking}

Incidentally, K-30 does much better with lens kitted with my Super Program than the Super Program loaded with Kodachrome ever did with that lens, so I'm more than happy with the K-30

If I Recall Correctly, users have reported no vignetting for the Sigma 10-20mm in the range 15-20mm, so if I were to get a K-1, it would give me 15-20mm, instead of the "FF effective" 20-40mm I'm getting now - I could live with that.

Are you thinking this is a result of the Noise Reduction?

It would be nice to know what parameter values they used for the JPEG rendering engine.

Should we expect similar results from K-70?

I don't have a K-1, but I would use it exactly as I use my K-30 - just with corresponding wider lenses. I use my 10-20mm lens when I want to capture where I am as I experience it - for example, I'm in a swamp and I want to capture what I'm intimately experiencing from my spot, not viewing it from paces back with a "normal" lens {which would be impossible if I were on a boardwalk looking to the side}

Of all the manufacturers, Pentax seems to depend more on current users devoted to old lenses, so I expect them to internally resolve the legacy lens issue before Ricoh would sign off on entering the MILC market.

I've never designed a camera - I've never been that kind of engineer - I'm guessing that is true of you also. Your proposal sounds interesting, but there was some important "hand waving" covering several important unknowns.

(1) I don't know how much volume is taken up by K-1 components apart from the light path {including sensor}, so I don't know what minimum size of an FF camera actually is.

(2) Cameras are not sold dollar / cubic mm or dollar / gram. We have no reason to think that a smaller camera would cost less. In fact, back in the days of film, the unsophisticated (*) K-1000 was relatively inexpensive compared to the more svelte models.

(*) not wanting to offend people here for the second day in a row, I won't call it here what I thought when I was purchasing my svelte Super Program. I will say that it reminded me of the Praktica I had passed on a few years earlier.

No, some years ago I moved to Canon because I liked their EF lenses so much better than what Pentax was doing. I had reliability issues with Rebels, so eventually I came back to Pentax; if Pentax had no longer existed, most likely I would have either gone to Sony or stayed with Canon - I can't imagine my ever going to Fuji

---------- Post added 09-18-17 at 11:33 PM ----------

Maybe only the conservative ones stayed with Pentax after their issues with AF and digital.

If The K-1 Didn't Exist...

Pentax has two choices. They can produce cameras for the users they already have, or they can attempt to enlarge their market. I have no idea whether their current market is sufficiently large, nor do I have any idea which way they will steer their company. If they are going to attract other users they need to release more lenses and they need to produce a FF that current Nikon, Canon, and Sony users will notice. It is their company, and what they do in this regard doesn't really affect me anyway, because the most expensive camera kit I've ever purchased was $700, and I don't see myself stretching my budget to include any FF camera.

And, from their comments, I know exactly who might read this. Pentax has said that their future is in "premium"; I believe that knowing what other companies are doing gives hints at what "premium" might consist of; I am quite certain that looking for more costs to cut is not "premium". The KP may also be a guide to new Pentax thinking.

Meanwhile Nikon users are dancing in the street proclaiming the D850 to be perfect for every purpose; better than any other FF, and in crop mode better than the D500 {D850's sensor is said to not be Sony}

---------- Post added 09-17-17 at 10:37 PM ----------

I hate to be the continual wet blanket at this party - but Pentax is not the market presence it was in 1980. In fact, if I mention "Pentax K-1" at other photo discussion boards, the most likely response I'll get will be something like "Pentax was a great brand once; whatever happened to them?"

The K-1 is not top of the industry heap. Canon and Sony partisans may argue about position of the Nikon D850, but no one outside this group is going to claim the K-1 belongs in that fight. The K-1 may not be at the bottom of the FF list, but it certainly is not at the top! Although many people will recognize the K-1 as a great value, people here repeatedly want to create something cheaper. If Pentax is really going to go after "premium" as they say, they're more likely to put something in above the K-1, perhaps allowing the K-1 to droop a tad in price.

In addition, Pentax may have only so much resources to put into FF bodies right now, because other developments are probably putting pressure on the 645Z, so it may need refreshing.
