Yesterday, while visiting the Castillo de Chapultepec in Mexico City, I met a girl sporting a Pentax camera. Her camera seemed to be an older film camera with a pointy pentaprism all black. Meeting another Pentax user in the wild, where I move is very uncommon.

Here in Mexico, the Liverpool department store offers Pentax brand eguipment. But I sadly see that the physical units in display (K-50 black and red) are just gathering dust. No publicity, no special prices. Heck, the CaNikons have their own displays and cabinets while the Pentax is jumbled with other photography parafernalia. I have also lectured the sales persons about the outstanding features and history of the brand, several times to no avail. Actually, I wouldn't go so far as to say they are actually selling the CaNikons any better either, since my focus is only Pentax when I visit the store.

Last week I spent some days in South Padre Island, TX. Almost everybody was snapping with cell phones, one nondescript point-and-shoot, and a young woman carrying a DSLR covered by a hat. I wondered if she was ashamed of her camera or was only convering it against the sea spray of the breaking waves in the beach. Besides this, I was proudly sporting my WR Pentax K-3. ;-)

Cheers

I do proud myself of my K-3 and the Pentax brand, and wish to let whoever wants to know how good this camera/brand is, that there are other great brands out there besides CaNikon. On the other hand, any kind of DSLR camera will attract thieves no matter what brand you use. They might be disilusioned afterwards but the impulse to steal no matter what brand you carry will be there.

This are my 2 cents.

I actually relay on my Moto X 3rd Gen on my business travels. If it were vacations I use my Pentax. The Moto X takes amazing photos. The people that have seen them fully agree with me. Some of them know that I have a K-3 which takes excellent photos that I have shown them too but still are greatly impressed with the quality of the photos taken with this phone. I believe there is space for both options in my life.

Last week I attended a trade show in Chicago. Saw the customary crowd of CaNikons in a fair amount and a lot of cell phones-as-camera examples, but no single Pentax both during the show and during my outings in the city. I didn't bring mine either but used my cell phone camera instead. No need to risk my treasure.

Hey grhazelton,
I tend to think the same. Well, that was until I got my hands on a Moto X Pure. Man! This smartphone really takes good shots, even using its onboard flash. I am a K-3 user and I like my camera (actually, I bought both at the same time from Amazon), but this phone really shoots. Give it a try.

My first sighting of another Pentaxian in the wild, just a moment ago! A fellow K-3 user. This happened at a christian youth activity in a small tourist town named Tapalpa, in the Mexican state of Jalisco.

I should have clarified: "nobody in the printing industry (mostly young guys) do not know what Pentax is. They do not register that this is a brand. Chances are you should be able to print it.

I agree. It is nice to go and daydream at the stores, and... Fortunately for me, Ricoh has been doing their promotional homework enlisting different store chains in my country (Mexico) where I can see and touch some Pentax products, stores such as Liverpool, Fabricas de Francia or Sanborns for instance. And I believe other known chains are now starting to offer Pentax branded products.

But I would never buy from them, though. Their expectations of profit are way high. For instance, my recently purchased K-3 was offered at Liverpool store at a whopping price of roughly US$1680 whereas Amazon (US) had it at US$890. I understand we pay much more in import duties but not that much. I am quite happy with my K-3 and have found results with it are very good!

Hi tim60,
I am sorry you have had bad experiences buying online. Personally, I have bought a K-x, a K-3 (both new), a Metz flash, a Pentax K-x (a second one), a SMC f/1.4 lens and a Tamron lens (all used) without being able to touch any of the goods prior to the purchase or without any prior experience with these goods, only good faith. This is also true for different and asorted goods that I have bought during the past five years at Amazon and eBay.

For the photographic gear I did my research, and from what I have read here, most other people do the same. The benefit is usually a better value proposition that buying at Brick & Mortar shops. But yes, there is risk in buying this way (I have been burned once or twice). And actually, Pentaxforums Marketplace has been good to me 100%. I really do not care to see and touch. The Pentax brand is solid and trustworthy so it is only a matter of reading what users have to say about the model I am interested in. That is how I decided for the gear I have.

Do your research, research also your potential supplier, and go for it! Have a great day.

Yes!
My brother is about to join the ranks of Pentax users. He is about to buy a black K-50 with kit lenses. The brotherhood is growing!

Also, a nice surprise is that now the Liverpool department stores also carry the Pentax line in Mexico. They even carry the K-3 with the 18-135 lens at a verry competitive price during the preblack Friday sale in Mexico under the government sponsored El Buen Fin, happening this long weekend in our country.

Not a bad thing that Ricoh is turning Hoya's disaster around.

Looks like a bright future for Pentax ahead.

Actua˝˝y, it's not the initial cost of the camera itself. It is the import duties and the outrageous markups these people expect from whatever they sell in Sanborns. Carlos Slim didn't get reach for being charitable. ;-)
