Lovely shots! Glad to see some from the 28, it feels under-represented here and it's definitely been way too long since i got mine out.

My biggest issue with my GRII is that +/- button on the back. I am constantly hitting it inadvertently.

Firmware update issue on GRII

Guys, I've updated FW many times on all my cameras, including this GRII, but can't get it to recognize that there is a FW file on my card. Gives me the option to confirm the FW version, but will not see the file and give me the option to update. I'm putting it outside of the 2 folders that are on the card after formatting. It is the .frm file after unzipping. Am I missing something obvious?

Pentax DFA 24-70mm or Sigma 24-70mm f2.8?

I've had the Sigma (newest, HSM version) for several years now. My feelings about it are pretty much the same as they have been for other Sigmas I have owned. It's a fine lens, I just find Sigma rendering to be a bit more "clinical" than Pentax rendering. I use mine almost exclusively for event photography, at which it excels. It's a fast focuser and I've had no trouble at all with focus accuracy on my K-3. There is no "pixie dust" in there, to be sure, but it's a sharp, solid lens for it's intended purpose. I'm positive that I will not trade it for the Pentax unless the cost difference becomes nominal, and that day may never come, which is fine.

I might add that the only Sigmas I've used that don't render in what I am calling a "clinical" manner are the discontinued 30/1.4 and my 100-300/4, which I would have to be really desperate to ever sell.

Has Anyone Used the Tamron 18-200mm

I have owned the 18-200 before. My wife used it. I can tell you it is a definite step down from the 55-300, IQ-wise. You'll mainly want to shoot it at f8 to keep things looking decent.

Is the 24-70 f2.8...

I have the Sigma 24-70/2.8 and it's also large and has the 82mm filter, but it doesn't feel out of place on the K-3 with a grip, which I always use. I wouldn't use a grip with the K-1, so it would probably feel about the same. Hefty, sure, but not inappropriately so.

Any thoughts on Xmas price?

Don't put a lot of weight into price guesses on this site. Despite the fact that we had a rumor with some weight behind it of a $1900 opening price for the K1, most around here dismissed that and said it would be several hundred higher. Admins included. Turns out that was actually a smidge high!

ricoh gr II silver

I agree, though I'm sure my opinion would be considered biased since I already have a black GR II, but I truly don't care for the looks of the silver one. One of my favorite things about this camera is that when you bring it out, it gets absolutely no attention. Everyone just assumes that it's some cheapo pocket camera and wonders why you don't just use your phone. It's like having a Toyota Camry with a Corvette V-8 under the hood. The ultimate "sleeper."

I can personally attest to it being a near-perfect travel camera, with the possible exception of night shots. With no SR and such a small and light form-factor, it can be tough to hold it still enough. If you can brace it against a post or something, it works much better, but still not as good as, say, a K-3. Alas, nothing is free , but I'll take this limitation in exchange for such an easy to travel with camera. And it's close to spectacular in daylight.

DA*55 F1.4 - slow?

Agreed, the 55 is never going to be an AF speed demon, but at least give it a fighting chance with a more modern body. K7 is much slower than K-3.

Ball Heads vs Pan/Tilt heads

I would echo all of this. I didn't understand why anyone would want a ball head until I discovered the key feature it must have. A friction control. Now I have no desire to use anything else. This gives you the ability to set the friction on the ball so that you can position your camera any which way you like, then just let go and it stays right where you put it. Need to move it again? Just do it, no need to touch any of the controls. It just doesn't get any simpler than that.

New Pentax Full Frame Gets 36MP Sensor?

I actually think this supports the lower-priced body theories. The 645D and Z made waves with their low price points. Ricoh would have to be brain-dead not to realize what worked before has a good shot to work again, and Ricoh ain't Hoya. They may be hoping to make up some of the margins on the new lenses.

I certainly hope this is indeed their plan because I have little interest in the new lenses, at least not anytime soon. I already have the Sigma 24-70 and, along with my ZK's, I wouldn't feel any burning need for lenses for a while. I might want the 70-200 someday, though.

New Pentax Full Frame Gets 36MP Sensor?

You don't have to worry about that. Pentax uses SD. Period. Even on the 645Z. Sensor origin is completely unrelated to card type. Plus, I can't imagine that they would put in only one card slot when the last two aps-c bodies have had two. (Original K-3 has two also)

I believe a Pentax rep told someone at the New York show just days ago that it will list for $2400 and have a street price of around $1900.

I read it here but can't find it now.

Trip to Rome and Venice in January

I think those lens choices sound fine. You may not use the 85 much, but it might be nice to have for some "artsy" shots.

There's definitely more to see and do in Rome. I honestly felt like 2 days was plenty in Venice, at least if you're just planning on visiting the main island.

Can't help you with any guided tours. Have never liked those. We much prefer to research beforehand then explore on our own.

I just don't think this is correct at all. Airports are not that far out. To suggest that you will lose a day's travel time getting into the cities is ridiculous. My wife and I spent 3 days in Rome and 2 in Venice (among other cities in Europe) and had a great trip. Of course we didn't see everything, but we saw all the major sights and didn't feel rushed or slighted at all.

I totally agree. Trains are much better for in-continent city-hopping. You'll see the beautiful Italian countryside and when you arrive in Venice you can take a water-taxi to the city proper. It's part of the experience and kinda fun! Be prepared for a possibly long walk to your hotel in Venice and a map would definitely help. You may want to find out from your hotel if the taxis can come right to the door (i.e. it's on a navigable canal). The taxi driver will want to drop you off at St. Marks Square either way, so you may have to be firm with them.
