Pentax A 24mm 2.8 vs Sigma 24mm 2.8

I've owned all of the variants at various times. The K and A versions of the Pentax, the autofocus and manual versions of the sigma (A and non A).

Basically, if sharpness is your primary criteria, then go for the Sigma. It is quite sharp wide open. The Pentax really focuses on center sharpness only. If color and contrast are more important to you go for the Pentax, it has great colors whereas the Sigma needs post processing work. The Sigma looks washed out if used wide open and flares quite a bit more than the Pentax.

Optical qualities aside, the autofocus version of the Sigma is a lot bigger. The autofocus is loud and raspy, but fast. (This is not just the one copy I have used, I've owned several). The lettering on the Sigma (all versions) is just printed on and wears off with time. The hood is creaky (although to be fair, finding the original hood for the Pentax is really difficult). The Pentax just has a much better feel in the hand.

They are both good lenses and each has its benefits and drawbacks. I don't believe you'll have any compatibility problems with either lens on the K5. Right now, I think you'll be paying roughly 1/3 to 1/4 the price of a Pentax 20mm.

Item for Sale
SMC Pentax-F 1.7x AF Teleconverter

Asking Price
225.00 USD

Item Location
Los Angeles (United States)

Item Description
For sale is a SMC Pentax-F 1.7x AF Adapter in Excellent plus condition.

This SMC Pentax-F 1.7x AF Adapter is in perfect operational condition. The glass and SMC coatings are perfect. The body is in very good shape as you can see from the pictures. This is a great piece of equipment if you have long manual focus glass that you want to make even longer. You gain a partial autofocus and it transfers the "A" setting information all for the cost of 1.5 stops of light. Image quality is much better than most non-Pentax teleconverters especially 2x teleconverters. And of course, it works with full frame glass. Includes generic body cap and genuine rear cap.

I haven't sold here in a while, but I have great past reviews. I don't charge any paypal fees. International buyers are welcome, I ship internationally all the time. Please inquire if you need international shipping.

*PRICE REDUCED* PENTAX HD DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED WR Lens

Asking Price
260.00 USD

Item Location
Los Angeles (United States)

Item Description
For sale is this Pentax HD DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED WR Lens. I bought this lens direct from the Pentax store intending to use it, but with the birth of my two kids, I just never got around to it. And then my Pentax K-30 broke and it seem pointless to keep. Other than taking out of the box and testing it once indoors, I've never used it. It is basically brand new. This lens features the new HD coating and the Water Resistance which are both excellent features over the old DA version. Of course, the lens is in perfect condition in every way. Includes everything that came with the lens including lens, hood, pouch. Everything is new and I am offering a 7 day refund. I believe it to be a very sharp lens for the price range.

I think they missed an opportunity with the space used for the flash/gps. They should have made it into a slot with a slide off module. Then everyone can put what they want in that space:

1. Flash module (doesn't have to pop up, but be stronger and fixed and work as a controller)

2. GPS module

3. Wi-Fi module

4. Combination modules (that have more than one feature).

5. Auxiliary battery module.

6. Radio module as flash trigger.

Think of the possibilities for accessories, Pentax could make a fortune!

For what it's worth. I ordered my 55-300 on Thanksgiving day. Got order confirm the same day. Got shipping confirm with tracking on Friday. Received the lens via UPS/USPS Smartpost yesterday. Box was a little beat up, but otherwise a flawless transaction. I charged the entire amount on an AMEX though.

Yes, I ordered the 55-300 and my lens shipped Nov 28 with a UPS confirmation due to arrive Friday (since I live on the west coast). It's left Secaucus, NJ, United States 11/29/2014 4:55 A.M. Departure Scan. I was impressed because they shipped the day after ordered and the rumors are the Pentax store is slow.

Middle focal length question (40 to 60mm)

Generally speaking, the FA primes focused more on center sharpness. I think this is one of the factors that give it the "pixie dust" feel and makes the subjects "pop". But for landscapes and stitching especially, I would feel edge to edge sharpness to be more important and I think both the 40 and the 70 are better for that.

I have used both the 43 and the 40. I kept the 40 because, the field was relatively flat and it was sharp from corner to corner. The 40 is also a "pocketable" lens, while proponents of the 43 have argued that without the hood, it is almost the same size; I say "come on, is it amateur night? Are we all going to forgo IQ and run around without a hood?" One thing to note with the 40 is that I have found its autofocus to kind of vary from camera to camera. Over the years, I have used the K-100, K-10, K-20 and am currently using the K-30. I have found that it seems to work much more accurately on some cameras than others. (And this is not a focus adjustment thing).

Just my 2 cents, but I think the DA's would work better for your application (landscapes). If you had said you were a portrait photographer, I would have said the opposite.

Ebay has been trying to be more reputable and less "garage sale". With their current buyer protection policies, they will almost always side with the buyer whether or not there is a legitimate issue if you open a dispute case. That being said, this will not prevent you from receiving junk, however, you will almost always eventually get your money back. There is hassle involved and a few weeks of waiting sometimes, but generally your money's safe.

It sucks if you are a seller and the buyer is less than honest though. You should see how many long time sellers on Ebay are completely up in arms about this.

Pentax F 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 Autofocus Zoom Lens

Asking Price
65 USD

Item Location
Los Angeles (United States)

Item Description
For sale is a smc Pentax-F 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 Zoom Lens in excellent condition.

This is a well built lens. Unlike the FA variants, the F model features metal internals to give it a nice quality feel. The zooming is internal so it doesn't extend or shrink while zooming. It only extends slightly while focusing. Extending all the way to 300mm, this is an excellent lens for those who only occasionally need the extra reach and don't want to spend $1000 getting some 300mm * lens.

This particular sample is in excellent condition. The body is in great shape, no scuffs or scratches. The focus is smooth as is the zoom ring. There is no zoom creep. The glass is clean and multicoating is perfect and shimmers with the trademark SMC blue-green-red sheen. The rubber grip is tight and gives a very secure feel. The aperture ring clicks solidly and the blades are very snappy. Comes with original front and rear caps.

Tamron 90mm f2.8 Di Macro Autofocus Lens

Asking Price
340 USD

Item Location
Los Angeles (United States)

Item Description
For Sale is a Tamron 90mm f2.8 Di Macro Autofocus Lens

The Tamron 90mm Di is the current iteration of the legendary 90mm macro lens. Tamron 90mm's have developed a great reputation amongst macro users. This is a super sharp macro lens. Very bright and easy to use. The slightly shorter than 100mm focal length is helpful for portraits without sacrificing too much minimum distance for macros. It does 1:1 without any adapters. It has a focus limiter for fast focusing during non-macro shooting (something most Pentax macros do not have). The build quality is very good with distinctive gold lettering. While most autofocus macros don't feel so great with manual focus, this Tamron features a push-pull auto/manual clutch which allows the right balance of tension for manual focusing and looseness for autofocusing. The lens also includes a reversible hood.

This particular copy is in Like New Condition. Glass is perfect. Multicoating is perfect. Focus ring is smooth and aperture ring clicks solidly. Blades are snappy and oil free. It has the original box and manual. Comes with original hood, front and rear caps. Also comes with a scratch-free multi-coated filter. The body is scratch free. No wear. Basically it is like a new lens.

Sigma 24mm f1.8 Autofocus Prime Lens

Asking Price
330 USD

Item Description
For sale is a Sigma 24mm f1.8 Autofocus Prime Lens in Excellent Condition.

This is the current model Sigma 24mm. If features an astonishingly fast f1.8 aperture (vs. 2.8 for those old 24mm's). It close focuses to 7" which allows for those eye catching perspective close-ups. The autofocus speed is fast and sure. It has the nice "crinkle" matte finish present all current sigma lenses. It is also a DG lens, which means you are ready for full-frame (when Pentax has one available). I've always felt the 24mm's were the perfect balance of wide angle lens on an APS-C camera myself. I've used many of the 24mm's (Tamron, Pentax, Tokina, other Sigmas) and I really feel that the f1.8 really helps out in indoor situations.

Physically, this lens is in excellent condition. The glass is clean and the multicoating perfect. No mold, yellowing or scratches of any kind. The focus is smooth and the focus clutch works properly. The aperture ring clicks solidly and the diaphragm blades are snappy and oil free. The body is in great shape with minimal wear. Includes original hood, generic front cap and original rear cap.

Asking $330 + shipping.

Item for Sale
Elicar 90mm f2.5 1:1 Macro Lens

Asking Price
150 USD

Item Location
Los Angeles (United States)

Item Description
For Sale is a Elicar V-HQ Multicoated 90mm f2.5 macro in Excellent Plus Condition in PK/M Mount.

This is a classic lens. Sometimes sold under different brands like Panagor or Vivitar, this macro has earned is well deserved reputation from its excellent performance and beautiful build quality. It does 1:1 without any adapters. It is half a stop faster than a typical f2.8 macro. In personal testing against a Tamron 90mm Di Autofocus Macro, it outresolved the Tamron in almost all aperature and is brighter to boot. Plus it has a much longer minimum focus distance at 1:1 than the Tamron. I have also used the Kiron made Series 1 105mm macro and this lens is basically every bit as good (except without the A setting). This lens is in the KM mount so you will need to use the "green" button with your DSLR.

This copy is about as nice as they come. The mutlicoating is perfect. The glass only has minimal amounts of dust. The focus is super smooth. The body is very clean and free of defects. Aperture ring clicks solidly and the blades are oil free. It is so nice it even still has its original inspected in Japan sticker still attached. The Elicar brand was originally marketed as dental macros, so this also has the dental range stickers on there (which are removable if you so desire). Basically, this is about as nice a used copy of this Komine made 90mm macro you can find. Includes generic front and rear caps.

Item for Sale
Vivitar 100mm f3.5 Macro Lens with 1:1 Adapter

Asking Price
95 USD

Item Location
Los Angeles (United States)

Item Description
For sale is a Vivitar 100mm f3.5 Macro Lens Manual focus version with 1:1 Matching Adapter

This is the extremely well know and well regarded Cosina made macro nicknamed "Plastic Fantasic". While its build is mostly plastic (it does have a nice metal mount), it takes excellent macro photos. It does 1:2 natively and comes with the matching adapter (which is a apochromatic close up lens) that allows 1:1. This lens was so well regarded that Pentax contracted Cosina to make a version for their use. You can see it on the lens database, it is the FA 100mm f3.5 Macro. Unfortunately, Pentax did not see fit to include the 1:1 adapter on their version, so it only goes to 1:2, whereas the Vivitar version goes to 1:1.

This copy is the manual focus version. It has an excellent focus ring that is well damped and does a more than a full turn. This is critical for the fine focusing you need in a macro. This lens also has the "A" setting that allows for auto aperature and use of flash. Using a flash is very helpful in many macro situations. The glass and multicoating are both clean and clear. Body is in perfect shape. Aperature clicks solidly and blades are oil free. Comes with original front and rear caps as well as original box with all documentation.

This is absolutely one of the best beginner macro lenses out there. The high quality 1:1 adapter sometimes goes for $40 alone because people buy it to put on their Pentax FA 100mm.

Item for Sale
Vivitar 135mm 2.8 Close Focus MACRO 1:2 Lens

Asking Price
165 USD

Item Location
Los Angeles (United States)

Item Description
For Sale is a Vivitar 135mm f2.8 Close Focusing 1:2 Macro Lens in M42 mount.

This is an extremely hard to find cult favorite lens. Unlike most 135mm lenses, this one focus down to 20 inches at a magnification of 1:2. Basically it is a 135mm macro lens, but since it doesn't go down to 1:1, they called it "close focusing" instead. It is a Vivitar branded Komine manufactured lens. The same maker and design as the Panagor (or Elicar) 90mm which is a fan favorite. You can tell just by looking at the pictures that they were made by the same designer. None of the Pentax 135mm focuses closer than about 3.5 feet. I've had so many 135mm's from Pentax and other manufacturers, this one is the best, hands down. Better than the Pentax K 135mm f2.5 (the good one), better than the Vivitar Series 1 135mm f2.3 (although the series one is half a stop faster). Very little chromatic aberation even wide open. If it's so good why am I selling? Well I actually have two, so time to sell one. You can actually take it down to 1:1 and beyond using close up lenses, but as is, it is perfect for photographing live insects off flowers and such. Most 100mm macros have a minimum working distance of about 1 ft. This thing has a minimum working distance of about 20 inches. That is almost double! The real benefit of using a M42 lens with adapter is the fact that you can use your camera in Av mode. Just switch the lens to manual and turn to whatever aperture you want and take the shot. No need for the green button. This is a huge advantage in my book compared to M type K mount lenses.

This sample is in excellent condition. Glass is clean and coating is perfect. (although these lenses are suppose to be single coated, this particular one seems to be a later version which has some multicoated elements, from what I can see of the multicolored reflections on the coating). There is one piece of dust behind the front element, but it doesn't affect image quality at all. There is a tiny ding on the filter ring, but it still mounts filters and hoods. Focus is smooth. Aperature clicks solidly. The automatic manual button works perfectly. No oil on the blades. Comes with original metal front cap and original rear cap. Lens made in Japan.

This is a rarely seen lens and would be great for anyone who likes to do daytime garden shoots of live moving subjects. To a nervous insect, taking a picture two feet away compared to one foot is a world of difference. It does very well wide open (especially when using live view). I highly recommend you give it a try.
