The forgotten and found resolution on dpr

The breadth of the Nikon system is one of the reasons people bought into that brand; you could tap into it to do things that would have been impossible with another manufacturer (like using the massive 6mm fish eye lens whose field of view was so wide it was capable of seeing behind itself). We tended to compare our slides when projected onto a five foot screen, which gives you a better sense of IQ compared to a 4x6 print; however, poring over the slides on a light table with a good loupe might have revealed more significant differences.

I started my Pentaxian ways with an ME Super body and decent third-party zooms shooting Kodachrome slide film. One of my friends dove into photography by purchasing $3,000.00 worth of Nikon gear--in 1985. When we took pictures of the same subject with the same film and compared slides afterward, we really couldn't see that much of a difference--and he was the first one to admit it. The higher cost gives you extra capabilities and ruggedness--there's no way an ME Super could survive what a Nikon F3HP can endure--but IQ does not improve significantly if you open your wallet more.

I'm not sure if a film camera is worth the effort right now, especially since most people probably think Pentax has joined Chinon and Yashica in the Great Camera Factory Park in the Sky. Then again, LP sales are about to surpass CD sales for the first time in over 30 years, so maybe the analog-is-cool-again wave will hit photography as well.

Yes, autofocus is not one of their strengths. I cannot see them keeping pace with the rush to make autofocus as accurate with as many species as possible.

I imagine a smartphone would also work as a light source if it illuminated enough of what you were trying to duplicate.

Photographing cave formations is challenging, but the rewards are worth it. I'm impressed at what you can achieve handheld; not every show cave will allow you to bring in a tripod!

Fuji seems to have stolen all the MF thunder lately. Ricoh will have to do something truly remarkable to avoid being tagged as too little, too late with their next MF camera.

Looks like your setup works well. I've used a slide projector as a light source during my slide duplication days, but that option probably isn't too popular these days.

Beautiful job! I guess the number of exposures required depends on the subject and the magnification used.

My Metz 58 AF-2 and my wife's K-x never did work well when I tried bounce exposures with them. With my K-5, the pairing worked much better.

That is why the manufacturers have marketing departments: to convince you that the gear that will serve you well for many years is suddenly inadequate.

Wildlife too. I was on a river cruise last year and got some shots of bald eagles that would have been impossible without my K-5 and 55-300mm zoom. For wide angle shots and people photos, smartphones are more than adequate for most people.

That's largely the process I used for my exposures. My biggest problem was not getting enough layers to achieve uniform sharpness throughout the entire image. Using a focusing rail instead of turning the focus ring on the lens might help me to control what I'm doing.

I agree with your take on the video. Focus breathing is less of an issue with stills photography, which is what I do almost exclusively. If you were shifting focus during video recording, then focus breathing would be a much more significant problem. You can design your lens to minimize focus breathing--or just about eliminate it, which is done for expensive cinema lenses--but you might sacrifice performance in other areas. It seems to me that Sony's lens designers had video shooters in mind when deciding what to emphasize in their development process, whereas Pentax's lens designers were looking to satisfy stills shooters.

There might be some sort of filter you could apply in post-processing that would simulate this effect; here's one URL showing an attempt at an impressionistic look: https://sleeklens.com/how-to-add-an-impressionist-look-to-your-photos-using-photoshop/

Absolutely. The K1000 was fully manual; it didn't even have a self timer. Contrast that simplicity with today's expectation that every camera, for example, has to be able to record at least 4K video. Not everyone needs 4K video, but it's considered a must-have and Pentax cameras are criticized in reviews for lacking it.

I've done some rudimentary focus stacking in Photoshop CS4. Can anybody say how that compares with newer versions of Photoshop or the products mentioned above?

I wonder if, when people think of a digital K1000, they're thinking of Pentax marketing the cheapest FF DSLR around? The only way you could pull that off would be to minimize development costs by keeping it simple and selling it in volume, which I don't see happening during these days of falling camera sales across the board. Remember that the K1000 was manufactured for over 20 years, so its non-recurring costs were paid for early in its extended production run.

Thematic Kitschy Holiday Yard Decorations

In recent years, we've been going with an all-white palate for lights outside the house and not much in the way of decoration inside. However, in the past we've gone totally bananas with the inside decor; almost every square inch had some sort of holiday trimming on it at one point. We eventually decided that we were spending too much time decorating and not enough time really enjoying the season.

Based on the picture and the original poster's comments, it looks as if the main cause of the effect is the movement of the intervening air between the camera and the subject. There might be a little camera motion as well, but the rippling effect caused by the train affecting the air around it seems to be the primary contributor.
