All owners of SILKYPIX Developer Studio 3.0 for PENTAX get your Silkypix PRO 7 for 99 or Silkypix 6 for 49

There's also promotion for Silkypix 7 at 69

I bought SP6 for 49 and I didn't have to prove ownership of SILKYPIX Developer Studio 3.0 for PENTAX
I recieved mail with serial, registered the previously installed trial version and that was it

Primary battery pack for K-5 &co

One of grudges I held against K20D is that it took only proprietary batteries and lacked support for primary batteries (without additional battery grip). My wishful thinking was that Pentax or some third party would make a CR2 holder like the Nikon MS-D70.

Now that I have K-5 and have successfully repaired aftermarket battery I thought I might make a CR2 based battery pack my self.

The question is can K-5 handle 9V??
I know it can handle it when supplied from additional battery grip (6xAA). Common sense would suggest that battery grip and battery slot are connected to the same regulator and can both handle same voltage span. But what if not? Has anybody any info on this?

To my knowledge it's Panasonic NCR18500 at 2000mAh but they're impossible to get. Sanyo are available on FastTech

If the battery pack is ~20x55x40mm (like many camera batteries) then bet your a** it has two 18500 cells. What manufacturers do is they just pack them in different containers

Disassembling D-Li90 battery clone

Ever since I got my K10d back in the days I wandered what hides inside the battery. With years I learned what could be expected but I still wanted to open one up. If only one of my batteries would die. No such luck until lately. I received a pair of D-Li90 clones for my K5 and one of them was dead. Rather than asking for a refund I decided to open it up.

-1- Dead D-Li90 clone with declared capacity of 1800mAh

-2- Opening it up took some work with aknife. Inside there is a protection circuit and two 18500 batteries with capacity of 1400mAh!

-3- New Sanyo 18500 1700mAh batteries soldererd in place.

-4- Since the old batteries were discharged below the safe limit the over-discharge protection blocked the circuit - I couldn't get a voltage read from contacts on the D-Li90 housing. Inserting it in charger unlocked the circuit.

-5- The battery charged as usual and was at 8,4V when the green light on charger went out.

Tomorrow I'll try it in K5.
The third contact (T) indicates that the original battery has temperature sensor. It most likely blocks charging if battery is too hot. The lack of it poses no threat as long as one doesn't charge hot batteries.

At first glance I thought it's shake reduction for the mirror
but this is probably just to increase frame rate and/or silence mirror flop.

New Optio? WG-3?

Yesterday I briefly handled the purple WG-3 GPS. First thing I noticed was that it weights noticeably more than my plain WG-2. Next thing are the improved (IMO) buttons. They are knurled and silver which means better grip and better visibility. Compared to WG-2 the layout is a bit different and face detection button is replaced by a red button which instantly starts recording movie.
Other than that I can't say much. The shop was closing.

Perhaps I'm stating the obvious but nevertheless.
These macro rings usually have a lever that has the same role as the lens release button on camera. You have to pull that lever away from lens and twit the lens of the ring.

I checked the manual and K-r doesn't have the remote plug, so your only option is IR remote. I don't have any recommendations here. Get one from Ebay.

OTOH it seems that K-r doesn't require the button to be pressed the whole time. More here.

Control Shutter release

AFAIK the only way to achieve exposures longer than 30s is to use bulb mode (B). In that mode the exposure lasts as long as shutter button remains pressed. This in practice is very cumbersome and also results in image shake. That's why bulb mode is used with triggers be it wired, infra red or radio.

The wired triggers require dedicated plug on camera and usually have a button that can be locked and shutter will remain open as long as you don't unlock it.

Infra red triggers usually work so that you have to long press the button to leave the shutter open as long as you don't press the button again.

Radio triggers also require dedicated plug and work the same way as wired triggers but usually lack the lock option to lock shutter button.

If you'll be shopping for third party wired or radio triggers you can get the ones made for Canon as Canon and Pentax have the same plug.

Even with SD card and removable battery wireless charging and perhaps even data transfer is a plus. You lube the door and open it only every once in a while.

I like my WG-2 and am eagerly waiting to see what these cameras will bring besides SR and wireless charging. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for better image quality and manual control.

Three months ago I got my self a used K-5 with DA 18-135 lens and a Metz 36 AF-5 flash and now I'm selling some of the equipment.
I accept Paypal (+5€) and bank transfer (BIC/IBAN). Estimated shipping is 10€ registered and 15€ insured.

K20D + spare batteries and additional charger- 190€
I bought this camera from local Pentax dealer Foto Beseničar in March 2009. It comes with all the bundled stuff plus one Pentax, one Hahnel, one unbranded battery and a car/wall plug charger. The camera is in good working order with some signs of use. It has a small scratch at the corner of back LCD and I also noticed a small crack at the tripod mount. Sensor is clean and shutter count is at 17000.

Metz Mecablitz 36 AF-5 - SOLD
I got this flash from the seller that sold me K-5 and 18-135. As I have many flashes I have no need for this one. The flash is in like new condition.

D-BG2 grip - SOLD
I bought D-BG2 grip from a German shop on march 2009. It has been very little used and is in like new condition. I couldn't find any signs of use.

SMC Pentax-DA 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] DC WR - SOLD
I bought this lens at B&H on June 2011. It's a versatile lens and I was planning to keep it but I found a used K-5 that included DA 18-135. Seller didn't want to sell K-5 separately and now I have two DA 18-135 lenses. I haven't found any flaws on either, but I'm selling the one I bought at B&H because the on I got with K-5 still has extended warranty left.
Like I said the lens is flawless and without any marks of use. It had UV filter on since day one.

Long live dumb phones. My Samsung 271 Xcover easily makes it through a week without charging. However, waterproof dumb phones don't seem to be made any more and a day will come when I'll get a smart phone too.

Pelicans don't have locking latches and can accidentally open. I have a friend that can testify. He went canyoning when one latch opened. The water ingressed but luckily his camera (Canon G5 I think) worked after he dried it.
Years ago I was looking for a case and found only good reviews of Pelican. It seemed like a safe bet. It's so popular that I had hard time finding other cases let alone reviews of them. That made the alternatives even more intriguing and I got a B&W outdoor case and two more later on.
Pelican is by far most popular amongst protective cases but there are other options. I'd recommend a case with locking latches.

KPS Eyepiece vs O ME53

I used O-ME3 and later got a KPS with used K-x. I had KPS on K20D for quite a while but went back to O-ME53. Here's why:
  • Optical difference seems negligible - KPS is a tad bigger, O-ME53 is a tad clearer.

  • Ergonomically I like the O-ME3 better. While the eye cup of KPS seems fine it wraps the eye socket and causes the viewfinder to fog.

  • The eye-cup blocks a part of the back screen.
