The 35-105 was a lens that I was interested in several years ago when I was in my "vintage" lens buying mode, but I couldn't find a whole lot of discussion about it then. I'm glad to hear the positive testimony here. The focal range would be just about perfect for me on APS-C I think, so I may just have to look into picking one up someday soon.

Does custom menu item #21 work correctly?

I disagree that there is any reason for the flash to be going off during the exposure, but that is probably the way Pentax implemented this. It's really poor, and it ruins portraits because no matter how low the flash power is you're going to get point catchlights in the eyes.

Some images to illustrate how much it affects the exposure. Admittedly the first example is exaggerated by my camera settings and distance, but it's pretty illustrative of how much this can affect an image. My external flash was turned on and being controlled, but the strobe was covered to prevent affecting the exposure at all.

Does custom menu item #21 work correctly?

I know it shouldn't be part of the exposure, but it is. I'm wondering if my camera is messed up or if it's a general K-5 problem.

If it is just my camera that's not working correctly, it seems like a very strange problem for a single unit to exhibit. I have the latest firmware installed and I'm pretty sure that I have noticed this problem in the past with older firmware, but I don't use the camera this way very often so I just ignored it. I would like to be able to use it this way from time to time, though.

I was trying to use my external flash in wireless mode yesterday and I couldn't tell any difference between option 1 and 2 (Custom Menu #21 - Flash in Wireless Mode). My understanding is that option 2 should set the onboard flash to only fire the pre-flash and not during the exposure, but it doesn't seem to work. I was taking photos of my daughter and I can clearly see the onboard flash reflected in her eyes with either setting.

Does this setting work for everyone else?

I agree with Twitch. I wanted the DA 70mm and the DA*55mm, but I needed the DA 15mm so that's what I bought and so far I don't regret it at all.

Well, I guess it must have been a dirty sensor! I tried cleaning it again and after it sat for a while it's now working! I really thought it was shot, so thanks for the suggestions.

I have given a blower a try, but I was just kind of doing it randomly because I didn't know where the PDAF sensor was exactly. I'll take another look at that.

So far, just testing to see if I can get any kind of different response from the camera hasn't shown any change. I've tried switching lenses, cleaning contacts, pointing camera at high contrast subjects, trying focus in low light, switching AF points, resetting camera to factory defaults, and probably a few other things I'm forgetting but it's not given any different result.

Thanks for all the replies. I tried cleaning the contacts and I've switched lenses a couple of times but it's still not working. When I first noticed the problem, I immediately checked the focus switch but it was still on AF-S. I tried it in AF-C and nothing so I switched it to manual and back and still nothing. It focused fine in live-view, though.

I have noticed a problem in the past where if I would select the extreme right or left focus points, it wouldn't lock. I don't know if that was an early sign of a problem or if it was just being temperamental, but that happened on more than one occasion. It always worked fine when using the more central focus points though.

New K-5 problem?

I haven't heard this one yet, at least.

I've had my K-5 since March and I haven't had any problems other than dealing with the usual stuff (tungsten focus issues, etc) but overall I've been pretty happy with it. Today I went out to do a paid shoot and the autofocus just didn't work. The camera would run the lens all the way out and back and then give me the blinking hexagon. I tried switching lenses and it did the same thing. Fortunately, it still focuses fine in liveview so I just used that. So has this one happened to anybody else here?

I'm pretty bummed about it, but at least it's under warranty.

TAv mode is basically manual mode but with auto ISO, so if you don't want ISO=AUTO then you should shoot in manual mode.

I'm pretty sure that highlight and shadow recovery work in RAW, but one of them limits low ISO to 160 instead of 80. I can't remember which one though.

What to expect from K-x to K-5

I haven't used my K-5 extensively yet, but it seems to me so far like the metering and focus has improved quite a bit. And the shutter noise is barely audible compared to the K-x. The menus are almost identical and most of the controls are very similar, but one thing that has been causing me problems is that I keep hitting the front dial when I try to switch the power off on the K-5.

The battery life so far seems like it's a good bit better than the K-x (I always use eneloops in the K-x) but again that's based on limited use. The viewfinder is noticeably bigger and the LCD screen is way nicer than the K-x.

If you like to shoot Hi-speed continuous when you're doing skateboarding shots, you will definitely be very pleasantly surprised.

Thanks! That's my daughter and she has been my favorite subject since I got my camera but it's getting harder and harder to get her to sit for pictures like that. She says it's boring.

I've been going a little overboard with the lens buying recently and have become a new member of the Takumar club (Super 105/2.8 and 200/4), the Soviet club (Helios 44-2 and MIR 24), and the A club (A 50/1.7). I haven't managed much with the 200mm yet, but I'm really enjoying the 105mm.

I know cat pictures are a bit overdone, but they usually hold still for me and they don't complain too much.

I would like to formally thank everyone who sang the praises of the Helios 44-2 in this thread as it inspired me to buy one. I've been using it exclusively for several days now and it's a big step up from the kit lenses and the Pentax M 50 f/2.0 that I was using. I think my yearning for the DA 70mm is subsiding somewhat now.

I don't know what would make that one go for so much unless it was the condition. I know the multi-coated ones generally go for more, but I just won a Super Tak 105mm for $47 a few days ago. I'm anxiously awaiting that, a Helios 44-2 and an M42 adapter.

So far, I'm not quite comfortable using the 18-55 for some reason. Hopefully that will change as I use it more.
