Don't worry all is not lost, if these are representative of the photos that are dark you will be able to tweek them in any pp program.
What happens is the camera makes a best guess at the exposure and it doesn't always get it spot on, I would suggest going to P mode because then you can use EV compensation to fine tune the exposure,
I also use centre weighted metering to make sure at least the object of interest is roughly exposed correctly. Once you have taken a shot have a close look in review with the histogram on and you will see if you are over or under exposed, mostly I find I am under and need +1/2 ev compensation adjust accordingly and then take another shot and recheck (this is called chimping). Others may be able to explain it better but its all to do with the the amount of dark and light in the photo ie more dark and you will get over exposure more light then it will be under. Hope this is of assistance Ian

Thanks, after googling Gursky I see what you mean.

We felt we were very lucky with the weather as well Brian, only two smoggy days in China and a rainy morning Hong Kong.
Totally agree with your other comments.

Thanks for all the comments.

Thanks for the comments, will also try altering WB as I think the effect of bad smog will be similar to snow/cloud.

I'm heading of on a trip to to China shortly and want to know if there are any tip's, tricks or techniques that I can used to minimize the effect of smog.
I will be using a K200D, Sigma 17/70, Sigma 18/200. I have CPL, ND grad, Variable ND and uv filters for these lense's.

I think the first is a better shot technically but in the second she looks a lot more relaxed. I agree that the hand in the second does distract and personally would crop the top and bottom.
But as Stu said I am not a portrait photographer either. You have a very attractive model there so I look forward to seeing more shots of her.

You summed it up very well, my thoughts were definately along the same lines, as soon as I saw the crest and "for King and Country" I thought of those that didn't come back and the effect on those who did, not only from the Great War but all conflicts.

Cheers Ian

I've had this happen as well I blamed it on the UV filter that I left on the lens but never took a shot with it off to see if it was the problem.
Cheers Ian

PS had alook through my photos and found these two

Wireless flash without slave mode.

Hi,
With my K200D and 360 flash the procedure is as follows, set the channel for the ext flash, mount flash on camera, turn on camera and flash, press shutter release halfway.
With flash removed set power switch to slave, set camera flash to wireless mode, in custom settings set (flash in wireless mode) to 2(off) the built in flash still needs to be up but only sends a short flash to communicate with the slave unit, hope this is of some assistance.
Ian
As far as I know the control mode and master mode are used when your 540 is mounted on the camera and you are using it to control another slave unit, also I think the slave unit needs to have the front exposed to the control for it to all work (someone correct me if this wrong)
Regards Ian

Your series brings back a lot of memories, I've eaten that fish and from memory it was called an "Elephants Ear Fish" and it was very tasty. We haven't had any bad experiences with street food and it tastes a lot better than the westernised hotel food.

I have never dealt with them, but they do state that they provide the warranty and that they are imported "personal use" items that don't attract GST, so I guess that they are grey imports.

For me its a hobby that gives me an excuse to spend money on myself, not that that's ever been much of a problem but now I can "justify" doing it.
As far as showing my photo's, I have posted a couple for citique when I was pleased with what I had achieved and wanted to know if others felt the same way, others I have posted if I thought someone else might be interested (usually in the subject rather than the photo).
Travel shots I share the keepers with anyone I'm travelling with, and they all scroll through as screensavers on my computer and remind me of places we have been or things that have happened.
