To prevent having to redo the tedious task of re-calibrating lenses, I made a spreadsheet with the settings for every lens and body combination that I own. I store a copy in every camera bag I own.

If you buy it (or could buy it) from Canada does it come with a USA warranty?

My practical experience with this issue is that there are certain lenses that I could never get acceptable sharpness with when testing at maximum aperture e.g. I had to send back 2 Sigma 18-35 Art series lenses until I received one that is sharp at all focal lengths. It seems that as the cameras (K3) have gotten more sophisticated the more demanding they are of lenses thus requiring higher quality and more expensive lenses. N.B. I am a photographer not a technician. I learn these technical details and take the steps I must to achieve the results I must get in situations that cannot be redone (e.g. weddings, corporate events, etc.). Some such as a Tamron 28-75 2.8 have been spot on requiring zero adjustment in K5's and K3; that may not be true for all 28-75's or for all K5's or K3's. The world did not seem quite so complex in the days of film - perhaps someone more technical could opine on such a topic.

Good point about the color and tonal gradation. As a long time portrait & wedding photographer using medium format, the dawn of digital brought many challenges and still cannot come close to film. I have learned to travel heavy and use slave flashes bounced into umbrellas wherever possible to get the results I want to achieve. Film was good enough with the right on bracket flash alone. I recall my thoughts as digital came into widespread use - what a shame, Kodak finally produced their best portrait films (as you mention Portra) and now it's on its way out. It was a vast improvement over VPS. Fuji's last attempts (NPS160, NPH400) were pretty good but tended towards more orangish tones than the Kodak. I actually have proofs from the late 60's? that my Dad did with CPS film and that was a great film - then Kodak regressed for a while after that until they got it right with Portra .

I received my order from Adorama and neither unit was packaged with manufacturer's plastic bag nor did they have any silica gel packs inside to absorb moisture. Previous units I purchased at B&H were wrapped that way. Also, neither had any warranty cards enclosed. The paper manual for the flash was just loose in the box not wrapped in plastic as the transceiver' paperwork was. Additionally, the order was sent in a bubble wrap envelope.; I do not feel that provides adequate packaging for electronic gear regardless of who delivers it. I called them and told them about this; they said to take pictures and send them which I just did. I will let you know my experience. I've never really dealt with them before so this may be their litmus test for continued patronage. I'd appreciate hearing others thoughts on this especially if you bought this special offer from Adorama.

I posted the following response to a new member when he had serious issues with Repair Service (Precision camera repair nightmare). Made me think of finally posting it here. I had been meaning to do so for quite some time. Wanted to see if anyone else had such bad experience with Official Store company that runs the site for Pentax. Below is my post: I own 5 Pentax cameras and, thank God, never have needed a repair. I do buy the extended warranty with every camera. I sure hope this is not what I will get if I need service. Camera companies, in the past, would give great service to professionals. Nowadays, we're all just consumers that can be manipulated by megalithic corporations with no soul - just a bottom line. And Ricoh is scurrying to stay afloat in a canikon universe. I did have a horrible experience buying a lens off the OFFICIAL website. I bought the 31 mm lens last Christmas and it had focus issues. Returned it - requested a refund from THE THIRD PARTY MORONS THAT RUN THE SITE FOR PENTAX SALES. They kept stalling me and making excuses. One idiot even said "well that's a lot of money you want back" !!!!! It is a dumbed down world, full of incompetents where no one can see the overall picture for achieving results in a big corporation. I FINALLY JUST CALLED MY CREDIT CARD COMPANY AND THEY PROMPTLY GAVE ME MY MONEY BACK. Anyone else on the forum have any such bad experience with The Pentax Store??? |

A lot of people twist the head of the flash so that it is perpendicular to the body. There are better modifiers, try a lighter weight unit.

Thank you for the excellent insight. I questioned the original post because I am paranoid about overexposure in digital so now I understand your reasoning. Underexposure is preferable to overexposure. In wedding photography, I am constantly seeking to balance the detail in an expensive gown with the skin tones of the bride. Question: If I point the meter at the brightest spot on a white gown, that then is middle grey and I still will open up two stops exposing that perfectly? Skin tones will then be somewhat underexposed in that scenario. Correct?

I did not know the currency exchange rate and everything I saw was written in Chinese so I went to the English version of the site. At that site, everything was in English and the lenses I looked at were priced higher than at B&H. Also, do not like the idea of paying cash when it is delivered; I then have less leverage if something is defective.

0.03% is an unrealistic number for credit card processing. (Only banks have the audacity to pay us 0.03% for using our money LOL.). 3% is more the norm for small retailers. Major stores do pay lower rates. Things like SquareUp, PayPal now, etc. charge about 2.75%. Depending on one's margins you either absorb it or charge the customer for it.

I find the comparisons to other similar lenses interesting and informative. It would help me make an objective decision about whether to buy. Thanks to all those contributors.

Nice helpful response, Joe.
My only concern is that this image reminds me too much of Thomas Kinkade.
Too much of a good thing can only lead to trivialization.

Thank you for spending so much time on your thoughtful answer.
I did what you requested, but it did not ask for a focal length. Should it have?
On Live View, there is no noise!
Why is that so???

Thanks for your input. The term clunk noise was the term used in previous threads.
In my case it is not so much a noise as it is that the inside does not seem to be bolted to the frame.
You hear and almost FEEL the parts sliding back and forth as you move the camera?
Does that appear to be NORMAL?

I know this issue has been addressed previously.
I just received my new K5.
I don't get a clunk noise BUT whenever the camera is rotated above or below horizontal, the innards of the camera move what seems to be a half an inch or so inside the body to the left or right depending on which way the camera is moved. You can feel the movement.
DOES THIS SEEM NORMAL TO ANY OF YOU K5 OWNERS? Or, should I return this body?
Also, do the SD cards seem to stick when you try to remove them?
Thanks for any help.
