Lens Cleaning

I completely disassembled, cleaned and reassembled a takumar 28mm the other day, plus took a part everything in a M50 1,7 except for the aperture. I had no prior experience with working on lenses, but I have tinkered with stuff now and then all my life. The aperture in the 28mm was difficult and time consuming to rebuild! So stay away for that and possibly also the focus mechanism. However if all you need to do is clean the lens elements it's really simple and straight forward.

I drove by and spotted a couple eagles out on the ice, so I crawled as close as I could and began shooting. I never saw the otters, just some black bits behind the eagle. I figured it was a carcass or something, so I payed it no attention (hence the open aperture). I only saw the otters after I zoomed in on a picture. I guess both eagle and otters were after the same thing; fish! Maybe the eagles was trying to steal an easy meal? Or maybe just resting from their own fishing, I don't know. I was surprised the otters dared to stay this close, but they did not seem to mind the eagle at all. Quick little buggers

Too bad with the shallow dof, but I did not see the otters before it was too late. Nice surprise, but I would like to have the opportunity to shoot this again with a smaller aperture :asleep:

Managed to get close to this one after a while.

All these sigma 500 4,5 shots are making me all sorts of jealous! Are you hand holding these, monopod or tripod? I cant stand tripods, and never tried a monopod. But hand held will not alwasy (understatement) get me sharp results like shown here.. My da*300 is not enough^^

Upgrading from a K1000

I'd say buy a used k5. They are so cheap now I want to cry (I paid top $ for mine, but never regretted it)! Money value on the k5 today is far far below what it's worth in terms of use. It is truly a fantastic camera that will fill all your needs. And I don't think you can get more bang for your bucks with any other camera from any brand.

Dane dawg that is a wonderful shot. So nice and sharp and 0 motionblur. Care to give me the exif spec, and maybe how you go about sharpening lilke that? Is it a crop, or is there a higher resolution picture somewhere? Again, spectacular shot!

Second this, the level is the viewfinder is awesome! I would get pretty much every photo with a horizon wrong without it. And I use the big one on the screen is nice for tripod work.

What do you make of the DA560 having a DC motor?

The dc motor is a huge plus, and with wr I got all I wanted (exept f4). Dc motor in the 18-135 is dead silent and feels much quicker then sdm. Now price will decide. It HAS to be quite a bit cheaper then the sigma 4,5 to be a viable option.

Pentax 18-135 WR vs Sigma 17-70

Using the 18-135 more and more. I will change to a limited when I have time and want best iq, but the ease of use, wr and the beautiful DC af motor of the 18-135 is hard to beat.. my copy is very sharp, especially in the Tele end. And at 135mmp you get nice closeups! Howewer my copy has quite bad PF, which is a shame:/

Think I finally decided on lenses

Good choices I think. The WR kit for hiking and the 40 for image quality when you want to travel light. The 18.55 kit is ok, and will do the job. However, I have both the 18-55 and the 18-135 and the latter is a much better lens (sorry :p ). It's got a much much better focus (DC motor vs screw drive) which is totally silent. A much more useful zoom range, and yes, it is considerably sharper (especially in the tele end). If it's worth the extra $ is up to you, but I haven't used my 18-55 since getting the 18-135 a year a go.

@Hooverfocus: Not sure if a camera profile is what I'm looking for, but I will look into those. Thanks ! :)

@amoringello: Thank you for understanding my question perfectly. And thanks for explaining why I can never get the two to match up perfectly. The pentax software can match my raw files to one of the k5 jpg setting perfectly, since they (camrea and software) use the same processing (I think). All I know Is that I can set the pentax software to for example bright, and it will render my raw file to look exactly like a bright jpg straight out of the camera. If Lighroom can't do this, ok. But I still want it to be close :-) I have been using settings similar to the ones you came up with. But It's still off some how, the jpg is more pleasing to me. It's hard to describe, but It looks like the jpg has a slightly warmer tone, and perhaps some fill light effect. No matter what I adjust though, it wont match up:p

Lamp issue with 18-135

Never noticed it before, but yes, I get this too. I don't have problems with focusing though, as I just use the center point focus and recompose the shot. This problem is probably true for other big lenses as well, but I haven't tested it.

Edit: Agree with Frog, I love the size of the k5:)

Yes, this is the method I have been using. Many many times. But I cant get it right, so that's why I ask if anyone else have presets they wish to share, or if anyone could give it a go and see where they end up.

No, and I think you'd understand that perfectly if you wanted to help me and not make fun of me.

I just want help/input in making a setting in lightroom that looks like the k5's bright setting..
So that when I import my raw files in to lightroom, they look more or less like the k5 "bright" jpg's.

The lighroom default setting is too neutral and dull for my liking. I would rather have them look like the "bright" jpg's to begin with and then adjust from there.

I stole someone elses post with this problem I have, so I figured I'd try and ask here. I think I posted a similar question (or the same) once before, but I haven't found a good solution, so I'll try once more.

Do anyone have a good default setting for the k5 raw files to use as a default in lightroom? I cant for the life of me mimic the pentax processing. I like the k5 bright setting well enough. What do you set as default to make lighroom import the pictures and look alright to begin with?

Why im asking this? I like to have the opportunity to edit some raw images, but I dont have time or will to do them all. I know the pentax software can make jpg's as in camera, but I cant stand that piece of software. Also shooting jpg+raw, or storaging both the jpg + the raw is not a good option for me. I would just like Lightroom to show my images with nice colors etc right off the bat. It's not fun to show other people/view my images with the normal neutral import look.

If anyone could post presets, or setting to achieve this I would be very very grateful! :)
Optionally, try to shoot a jpg+raw in bright setting, and mimic the look on the jpg with the raw file in lightroom, and see what settings you end up with. I've tried this a lot, but cant make up my mind

sorry for de-railing this post OP! TER-OR: I can in theory, but in practice I cant seem to find a good one to mimic the pentax processing.
