The "review" is also prominently featured within the K-1 offering at Amazon.

Check it out...

From the review...

"Scoring is relative only to the other products in the same category."
"DPReview is the world’s most popular dedicated enthusiast digital photography website. Since 1998 its mission has remained unchanged: to deliver the best reviews of cameras and lenses anywhere on the Internet, and help you find the right gear for your needs."

He does not need a defender... To be frank, he comes off as angry... IMHO.

OTOH... Guess I'd be angry too, if I'd survived the long march/frog-walk to a PhD in BioSci, only to find myself wasting away in a minor sub-division of the Amazon marketing colossus. Even though I've got a title that should permit me to rule by authority, here I am dying as I'm forced to field and defend my 'team' against valid questions from a vast unwashed army of third-tier brand loyalists. I did my job. I repeatedly proved features never intended to exist, in fact, do not exist, only to discover these sloths beavered around and are using creative variations on these in combination with other features to produce great things. That's not all... What's especially maddening, the challenges from these barbarians spotted fatal flaws that caused the team to completely withdraw and issue a rewrite of the earlier Pixel Shift evaluation. In addition, they actually strong armed the re-test of the main product's AF section when it was shown to be severely flawed and rewrite parts of the report because the original write-up produced by one of my employees was snarky, tactless and misleading. Finally, in order to accommodate, I was forced to adjust my budget timeline/priorities and burn a ton more money than their cr@ppy product deserves. I could go on, but Imagine that...!

Somewhere Rishi mentioned this stuff kept him from sleeping at night.

If the job had been designed and executed correctly in the first place, there's no reason he should not be anticipating his bonus and sleeping like a baby.

My 2 cents... M

Why is the K-3 so popular?

Yes... It's the skill level/dedication/love-of-life of the photographer. If you are a lousy K-5 photographer, you'll hate the K-3. If you are a world class photographer, you'll probably be able to get along just fine with a K100D, K-5, K-3... or any piece of workable kit without regard to brand and model. If the desire is to become a better photographer, overcoming the challenges presented by gear is easy... it just takes some time and using the tools at hand, plus a desire to learn how best to address content and composition.

Just sayin'... M

Extreme telephoto tips?

From a previous post...

Try this in LR (should take less than 10 seconds)...

1. Open the DNG file in the DEVELOP module.
2. Open the DETAIL dialog box and go to the Noise Reduction set of sliders.
3. Press the "Alt" key on your PC to turn the image to B&W, then with your mouse pointer, push the Luminance slider to the place on the scale where the noise speckles start to fade, then adjust to suit your fancy (some like to leave a few speckles to keep the image from looking plastic...). Be patient as it may take a moment for the effect to become apparent.
4. Press the Alt key, again and adjust the COLOR slider to remove the color speckles. Again, be patient as it may take a moment or two for the color speckles to dissolve.
5. Go to the SHARPENING set of sliders (above the NR set in the DETAIL dialog box).
6. In your mind, subtract the Luminance adjustment number from 100 and enter that calculation into the AMOUNT slider's adjustment result box. For example, if your Luminance number was 30, enter 70. Notice that the luminance noise you erased earlier has returned. UGH ! Get rid of it by...
7. Press the Alt key on your PC, again, and adjust the MASKING slider to the point that your image appears to be a B&W line drawing.
8. Release the Alt key...

BINGO ! You have killed the image noise AND sharpened it, as needed to fit your taste. Now, let's get that pesky WB under control...

I see they've added "Clarity Enhancement" ON, or OFF (p. 76), and dropped the "Extra Fine Sharpening" slider from the Custom Color choices (Bright, Natural, etc.). Whazz-up with that?

LR5 imports it as a fully dimensioned image (3000x4000) showing a centered crop of 2664x4000 that can be further fine tuned in the Develop Module, as you wish. Perhaps Capture One has a bug that prevents it from reading the Q7's DNG properly?

Consider getting the DA 21. Use it exclusively for (say) six months in single and multi-shot panorama modes, work on upping your post processing game, then consider your next steps.

I hope not... The Q7/S1 form factor is perfect for my needs. If I wanted more, I'd gone off-brand to Olympus, Sony, Leica, or similar. Most of my mirrorless friends, once the Q-system's features are demonstrated and they see the output, wish their kit was more like the Q. Also, the new K-S2 is generating a huge amount of interest and just blowing them away. I tell them that there's no need to dance with an ugly partner. It's never too late to change.

Well... it's an unseasonable -15F, this morning, so "sharpening the axe" is in order around here over the next few days. Need to be ready for the emergence of the Mourning Cloak and Eastern Comma butterflies in mid-March. They signal the start of our Spring... Still, the K-S2's features are flirting with me, but HEY... (back to reality) it's all about post processing, anyway.... right?

What's the impact of pairing the HD 1.4TC with APS-C crop DA lenses (other than loss of an f-stop)? Does it NOT expand the DA's image circle to fit the FF frame so there's no loss of sensor pixel density/count?

Just curious... M

55-300 Alternatives?

Listen up, Ag...

When it comes to producing excellent birding and wildlife photography, it's really easy to screw-up. If you think gear is expensive, nothing can be more expensive than putting in the extra effort to get into the perfect position, then come away with a missed shot. The opportunity for a do-over with a critter is nada. You made an excellent choice with the K5IIs. Why sell yourself short by trying to make do with a consumer zoom like the 55-300 when the DA*300/4+ HD 1.4TC is time tested, ready and available?

You will not be pleased with anything less and I'll be very surprised, if they disappoint.

So, you want to buy an expensive specialized lens that's seldom used and ends up collecting dust as it rolls around in the bottom of your camera bag? Why, when any lens will do... even the kit lens? Just take a few minutes and learn to post-process a multi-image panorama using MS-ICE (free). Learning how is easy and fun, plus you can go as wide as you wish... With a little practice, the resulting image can be almost distortion free and will dazzle your friends.

Thanks for the comment.

As to the "noise"... lemons, or lemonade (trees, or forest). If you do not know the place... well, it can really sparkle in a gritty way. In this case, I searched for visual devices that help convey an air of authenticity to the scene's magical atmospherics and charm. Purposely allowing some noise to remain in the image, helps IMHO. It prints crystal clear throughout at 11x17. Using metallic paper, it looks 3D.

My advice for the OP... Practice creating and post-processing panoramas BEFORE you go, so you will better know how to shoot to the strengths of your kit. When confronted with a scene containing tough conditions, go for it.

Cheers... M
