Pentax K-01 shutter issue

Hi All, I know this is an old thread but I just dropped in to say the same thing has happened with my K-01.

It started playing up a few weeks ago when the shutter would occasionally stay closed after taking a photo so the live view would remain black. Then today, during a shoot it started mucking up again and soon got to the point where it no longer opens no matter what I do.

Although about 6 years old, it's always been looked after and only had moderate use at most. Now all I get is a high-ptched ping sound when the shutter should normally open. At least the ol' trusty K20D is still going strong, although I swear the sensor noise gets worse over time. I guess it's finally time for an upgrade..

My feature request list for the second gen Pentax FF

De-crippled mount, regular tilt/swivel screen as per KS2, proper SR for video.

30 minute video limit is a regular pain in the arse for my shooting band rehearsals etc.

As much as I like Eneloops, they don't compare to Li-ion for discharge rate or power density. I'm satisfied with the AA-in-grip option.

K1: No aperture sensing for "legacy" lenses?

FWIW just putting in my vote for the aperture coupling too, and this is my first post in years.

To me, the purpose of FF was to be able to use FF lenses as they were intended, and this falls short. Of course there is the green button, and also the trick of using exposure comp to compensate for the stop-down aperture so you don't have to keep pressing the green button before each shot (as long as you're shooting close to open). But this detracts from the experience, and the experience is the whole point. I don't want to use old lenses for superior images, but for enjoyment.

There are good business reasons to leave it out, and Ricoh would have expected to lose a few potential customers with this decision. I am one of them. If you're not, that's great.

Apart from this, the camera looks fantastic and I'm genuinely excited for all its future users.

I will only buy a Pentax FF if it comes with an un-crippled K mount. Such a camera would be a great machine to a great many people.

K200D review up on dpreview!

Pros:
- The reviewer does make positive note of some pentax-specific features (build quality, top LCD, viewfinder etc.)
- The crops show excellent IQ compared to the other brands

Cons
- The tone of the language is outright negative. Hard to believe there is no bias compared to other reviews. Perhaps the author needed another coffee before writing?
- Far too much focus on default jpegs. The default bright setting is set for shop-floor appeal, not for ultimate accuracy, and can be changed in 5 seconds. This review will give less knowledgeable reader a bad impression which is unjustified.
- The custom function menu is from a different camera. This gives the review a sloppy, inaccurate feeling.

Overall: Recommended (If you only look at the pictures)

Followed the instructions carefully and it worked. Now, how do I upgrade the firmware in my Spotmatic?

Better AF with k10d/k20d/k200d?

I read somewhere that Sony may give a slightly higher stop advantage, but Pentax SR actually compensates in more directions - X Y and rotate as opposed to Sony's X Y only.

I've only used SR in my K100D, and the only way I can imagine achieving a significant improvement is with a tripod!

Handle them both, and go for the one that puts a smile on your dial.
I have the K100D and love it, but when I handled the K10D it just felt like it belongs in my hands.

Just a side note on the processing, AFAIK the bundled software does not do batch processing. You can take some of the hassle out of development by scripting DCRaw on *nix or Windows. It's also a great way to give an old PC new life.

Flash recommendation for K100D - P-TTL or Auto?

My K100D is going to be used by a technically challenged family member to shoot my own wedding. Fortunately they are not the only photographer, but I figure for best results it's probably best to invest in a flash of some kind.

Now some of the scenes are going to be outside without shade and shot against a daytime sky, so I need something that will work well for fill. Because of this alone I'm thinking I might need something that supports high speed sync? I have no experience with TTL yet, only manual and thyristor based units, will a P-TTL unit get me the best results here? Is P-TTL more idiot proof?

So basically what I need is:

- Good fill performance in high contrast scenes
- Can be used by someone who is technically inept
- Tilt and Swivel head
- Reliability
- Good value for money.

After days of trawling the net for info I am still looking so any recommendations based on experience would be most welcome. At the moment I am tending towards the Metz 48 AF1, but even this is stretching the budget a little. The Pentax 540 looks wonderful but simply costs as much as I paid for the camera and two kit lenses so is a little hard to justify...

Also as prices in Australia are just ridiculously high (double and beyond US or HK) can you good folks recommend any good online dealers who a) Know that Pentax exists and b) Offer good value?

Many thanks.

And here's yet another new member from Sydney, Australia..

I shot 7 rolls of film on my trusty EOS 1000 on a recent overseas trip, returned and developed them to find they were all blank. Unfortunately the camera had succumed to the Canon "sticky shutter goo" syndrome. Disappointing, but what a brilliant excuse to finally splash out on a DSLR!

Now I'm pleased to be back in the Pentax camp where I started with an S1a many years ago, but now with the K100D. Thanks all for making this great forum.

Geoff
