Is it okay to cheat a little? I have to input a focal length (so I chose 300mm) when using the Pentax A* 200mm f4 macro with the A-1.4xL converter ;)

Please don't ban me - just a ruler on the knuckles if I have offended :o

Can't disagree with you on this (I'm fortunate enough to have an A*200 Macro) - but if they are able to produce a newer D FA*200 Macro (possibly an f2.8 version - or faster ) with the qualities they have brought to the recent 50mm and 85mm beauties then I'm in

SMC Pentax-A* 300mm F4 vs DA* 300mm f4?

I think I may be out of step with experiences of some other members as I found the A*300 to be a very good lens (an improvement on the K300) but the notable step up in optical performance came when the F* & FA* were introduced. The DA*300 managed to improve on the maximum aperture (of its 2 AF predecessors) and all 3 AF versions are capable of producing top results at their maximum aperture, whereas I found that the A* needed to be stopped down a little to get really good performance most of the time.

Don't get me wrong - the A* is a super little lens with many benefits, but AF is a big plus for many subjects and I think your keeper rate would improve with a DA*. I've owned all 5 versions and I'm happiest with my F*300/4.5, not because it is better than the DA* (I don't believe it is) but because it is the right size, weight and IQ for my needs. If I was buying again today I would choose the DA* simply because the F and FA stock are ageing so will become more difficult to get repaired, and excellent condition copies are very pricey.

Hope that helps a little

Enjoyed your post and your images, look forward to more in the future!

The K1 MkII is much more of a camera than I'll ever master, but I do enjoy the ergonomics, the viewfinder and of course the results ;)

Pentax A 400mm F5.6 vs Pentax FA*400mm F5.6

I know the original poster asked about a direct comparison of the FA* and A 400mm Pentax lenses - well I have owned both lenses (at the same time) but can't provide any side-by-side images for this type of comparison, I can offer my experience of the two lenses if it helps a little.

Firstly I used the A 400/5.6 for several years having found it sharper than the M series equivalent, and even prefered it to the Tokina AF 400/5.6 - as many will atest it is a very good lens if not a little difficult to nail the focus (for my eyes). Overall I would say it was one of those lenses that was very capable if the conditions, focus and exposure were all "just right" - I didn't have a massively high keeper rate from it, but the Gooduns were worth it!

I found an FA*400/5.6 being sold by a trusted UK camera shop a couple of years back - the price was high, but knowing the advances in design and coatings that Pentax made between some lens ranges I decided to go for it. Firstly, it is so much more "usable" with it's incredibly small size and light weight (for a 400mm) - it is not a chore to add it to the bag if there is potential for longer shots. Secondly, my keeper rate shot up (over the A400/5.6) - partly because of the Autofocus but also I believe it to be sharper - particualarly at wider apertures.

In my experience, after you've used a lens for a while you get to know it's characteristics and strengths - with the A400/5.6 I would always use TAV mode and always shot at f8 (or smaller) with a shutter speed of at least 1/500. With the FA*400/5.6 I am happy to shoot at maximum aperture (1/2 stop down is better) and can use much lower shutter speeds successfully. This meant that I could get more (and better) results in lower light conditions.

Another plus point for me with the FA* (and I can't back this up with any comparisons) is that I seem to be able to crop images far more successfully and the resolution and sharpness is retained better. Many of my A400/5.6 images didn't stand up to tight cropping. This would point to the lens resolution capabilities being significantly better but presumably the MTF data should show this - so maybe it's more to do with my poor technique with the A series lens?

Hope that helps a little?

Selling Pentax K50 to get Ricoh GR III ?

The K1 mkII and the GRIII are the 2 cameras I use most - very different beasts, with the GRIII being so pocketable that you can take it anywhere and the images it can produce are superb. As has been said earlier - your K1 cropped is equivalent to the K50, so think to yourself "On this trip would I prefer to take a lightweight compact with great IQ or a bulkier but more flexible K50?" ;)

At What Point Did Your Pentax Digital Camera Become "Good Enough"?

I've enjoyed each and every digital offering from Pentax - exploring the features and the step up in IQ each time - but the turning point for me was the K5iis, I was already pleased with the superb, evolved design of my K5 but the removal of the AA filter allowed me to concentrate less on PP and more on getting the best out of my Analogue era lenses.

Since owning the K1 series I have chosen to take my K5iis on a handful of trips and never regretted it

Do I recognise that little black MX ;)

I was never into the K2 series (although I could be tempted) - I have been looking for an excellent condition black KX for many years - never seen a decent one at a non-obscene price
