F series AF lenses

I’ve used the F 50mm F1.7 on a K-1. Sharp lens. Screw drive AF is very fast but makes a fair clunk if it hits the focussing limits. Overall, a good performer. Focussing ring is very thin but with care can get precise manual focus.

Certainly worth calling CRK if you canít find a local shop. Iíve had a DA60-250 (broken internal cam) and a FA43 (faulty rear element - replaced free of charge, thanks Pentax) sent back to Japan through CRK. Turnaround was a couple of months in normal times. Might well be longer in this COVID era.

Thank you for your kind words. I was out practicing birding with the DA 300/4 when tbe butterfly landed in front of me. That allowed me to capture the 🦋 without disturbing it.

Yes, the US had had a shocker of a year for wild fires. After a very dry autumn, southern Australia has had a wet winter. So there will be lots of fuel about this coming summer which will be a concern.

2nd day of spring and its 30C here with a dirty pre-frontal northerly pulling down hot air from the interior of the continent. Typically don’t see this until the last week or so of September. Back to 16C tomorrow once the wind swings to the SW bringing cool air off the Southern Ocean.

First butterfly of the season (Australian painted lady) taken 21st August. Landed in front of me to soak up the late afternoon light.

An early spring this year, feels a good couple of weeks+ ahead of normal.

Expect significant price increases sneaking in across most products

There is an assumption here that TMSC manufacture the chips used by Pentax. That we don’t know. They are likely sourced from a number of manufacturers. The expensive chips will be in the camera and not lenses. Recent chip supply costs possibly may explain the relatively high cost of the K-3iii vs the K-1. The K-1 main processor chips were likely all manufactured some years ago at a contracted price and slowly been drawn down from inventory as cameras are assembled.

I suspect any trip you might look at will need to be through South America as I cannot see Australia nor New Zealander being open anytime soon for tourism. We canít even repatriate all our our citizens 18 months after COVID first appeared.

Travel kit has evolved over time. In 2008-ish, K-x plus kit lenses, then K-x with Tamron 17-50 F2.8, then K-3 with the Tamron, later a FA 20-35 F4 (works really well with crop sensor). Then came the K-1 with a DFA 28-105 which is a combo I’m pretty happy with for travel despite greater weight. As I like night cityscapes, a small tripod (Suiri T-005) goes in the suitcase (throw out that extra pair of shoes - be honest, you never use them!). I supplement the 28-105 with a compact prime or two, the exact selection is determined by my research on shots I really want to get and what focal length is required for those shots. If I was expecting indoor shots like cathedrals are a significant part of what I will be photographing, then a wider fast aperture lens becomes desirable. In reality, over the core lenses listed above, over the years I’ve taken quite a wide range of secondary lenses, including a DA*60-250 on one trip where I was going to be in a hire car the whole time I was away and not having to worry about airports or train stations every few days.

I use the Samsung NX1000 plus 30mm pancake for bike riding in the country, plus once (in a dry bag) on a JetSki day trip in Malaysia.

I would disagree with the suggestion to avoid manual focus lenses. The focus confirm beep/light, if you have calibrated AF via the Adjust All setting, I have found to be quite accurate. As you can see from my signature, I have one or two manual lenses.

Welcome from Adelaide. My brother lived in Mandurah for over 30 years before recently moving up to Perth. Would like to get over there again but with Kim Jong McGowan in charge of the hermit state, who knows when that will be!

Did you father have any/many manual focus lenses that you can access?

Yes, Great Egret I think. The long black line below its eyes plus the distinct kink in the neck would suggest great rather than intermediate egret.

Well done to avoid blowing out the sunlit white feathers.

There is a small Windows program available that will format SD cards in the way that cameras like them. I think there is one on the SDcard.org site.

From my Single In March efforts with the M50/1.4, wide open from memory.

Little bit of colour fringing to clean up in post processing, but overall, I thought the lens behaved very well.
