Thanks for mentioning that. I'll see if I can find the show online. I haven't heard of it.

Ha! I would love to see those monkeys. They're on my list of animals to see.

It would have been so much easier if I'd had a faster lens. I started trying to shoot at 800 but the shutter speed was too slow. This photo was at 1600 and I had to go even higher at other times. I started in fully manual but quickly realized it would be better to shoot aperture priority and watch to make sure the shutter speed was fast enough. The other issue is that as they move, the lighting changes dramatically.

I suspect that the camera wasn't always very steady in my hands with the heat, humidity, exercise and excitement. I had a monopod with me that in retrospect I might have occasionally been able to use. The other issue is that there was a crowd whenever orangutans were found. I'd frame a great shot only to have someone move right in front of my camera.

If I'd had the 300mm f4 lens it would have been nice! But then, they are often very close, at one point I had to move out of the way because a female orangutan was coming directly at me from about 4 feet away. I try to stay out of wild animals way but they don't always feel the same way.

Thanks for the comments! I would really like to upgrade my 55-300 since it's 2 versions old but it has been a faithful friend for several years now. :-)

Thanks for commenting. Being in Australia, you're a lot closer to the orangutans than us. It was a long haul to get there... San Francisco to Hong Kong, Hong Kong to Jakarta (long layover), Jakarta to Medan, Sumatra, and then a 3+ hour taxi ride to Bukit Lawang. Basically, we left home on a Friday night and didn't arrive into Bukit Lawang until Sunday.

I almost went to Indonesia 20+ years ago and I was wondering what it would have been like to see orangutans back then.

We went on a four-night jungle trek in Sumatra outside of Bukit Lawang recently. Seeing orangutans like this is an incredible experience. Sharing one of my photos - the jungle is a challenge to shoot in because it's so dark - high ISOs are necessary - and then, the orangs are backlit if they are in trees. I got lucky with this shot - it's about the only one where there's a light in her eyes.

And I get so excited, especially at the first sightings, that I don't pay enough attention to my camera settings. But I managed to get a couple of good shots so will share more as I process them. The trekking was no joke - had to use vines to rappel or ascend several times because it was straight up and down mountains. I'm glad we went in the dry season because I really don't know how we could have handled it if it were muddy.

I've seen chimpanzees and gorillas in the wild in Uganda, but I have to say, seeing orangutans like this was even better. There's just something special about orangutans.

I love Film Noir movies but haven't actively tried to take photos with that in mind. I chose this one though, because cars often play a part in Film Noir and I like how this photo makes you wonder what's going on.

Thank you everyone for posting your photos. It's never easy to pick just one. I'll mention a few that really caught my eye.

The winner is Hattifnatt with "Man with lifebelts" - the first photo below. It's your turn to host next week's challenge! I kept coming back to this photo - the complementary colors stand out and the photo really tells a story - I like how the man seems to be taking his work seriously in an extreme holiday setting. Congratulations!

The runner ups follow: aaacb (very good concert photo - not easy to do!), atupdate (classic shot - great color, composition and subject matter) and eva (you made a basket of peppers look interesting - love the colors).

Those photos are about as Texan as you can get. My dad was a cotton farmer in Texas and had John Deere tractors and I remember putting Tabasco on my food since about the age of 5. Good stuff.

Keep the photos coming - this challenge ends tomorrow night - August 11 midnight PST.

First, WOW. Bicycling coast-to-coast is incredible - I can't even imagine that. I got completely and utterly soaked when going into Galway. Spent some time in a tourist shop trying to get dry but the rain wouldn't let up so had to brave it. It was October so to be expected! Overall, I was lucky with the weather. I had to buy a t-shirt because it was so warm - I'd prepared for colder weather.

This is a very good representation of nature. I would definitely like to see more photos of Ireland - very many years ago, I flew with my bicycle from Seattle to Dublin on my own and spent a couple of months riding around all over Ireland - one of the best things I've ever done in my life. I didn't have a camera with me at the time.

I really like this photo - the blue makes it pop. And the play between the blue and green background adds to the photo without taking away from the snail.

Nice series. I like how the old buildings in the background of some of the photos seem to match the age of the trolley. San Francisco also repurposes old trolleys from around the world and I enjoy riding in them - I feel like I'm inside a Film Noir.
