If you still have the lenses, that is a great idea. I had a stack of FF Nikon lenses that never quite felt right on a APS-C camera, so I bought FF Nikon D700 and instantly it felt 'normal' again. Sure, the trade-off is having to carry a bigger and heavier camera but if you are willing to do that it's worth it. Having said that, all my Pentax cameras are APC-C sensor size with matching DA lenses and I never felt that was in any way a compromise.

"Pentax SLR Cameras 1952-1989" hardcover book by Danilo Cecchi + free Sigma flash Asking Price
20.00 AUD Item Location
Alstonville (Australia) Item Description
I have a hardcover copy of Asahi Pentax SLR Cameras 1952-1989 by Danilo Cecchi in excellent condition for sale. I just bought it to read the section on the Super A and put it on the shelf.
This is a great book that really outlines in detail the development of Pentax's film SLR cameras.
The outer sleeve type cover has some minor scuffing and page 28-30 have some minor damage (see photos), but the rest of the book is like new, including the hard cover. This book cost around $40 new in Australia.
Along with this book I am giving as a free add on a Sigma EF-530 DG ST (P-TLL) flash with its pouch and manual.
This is a great flash but sometimes the battery door does not make full contact and it cuts out. I suspect it is an easy home fix (gaffer tape?) but I just bought another flash instead!
However, because of this unreliability I don't want to sell the flash. I'll just give it away for free with the book. Are you the original owner of the item being sold?

I'd go for the Pentax Super A with a couple of small lenses. I used camera that with a 28mm and 50mm lens and it was perfect as a small, light weight kit, with just enough automation in Program mode to make it easy. Add a 135mm if you need something longer.

Pentax AF-200FG Flash - MINT Asking Price
120.00 AUD Item Location
Alstonville (Australia) Item Description Here is a MINT Pentax AF-200FG flash.
I bought this flash but hardly ever used it as I ended getting another bigger flash (Metz AF 52) that I used all the time instead.
This is a great flash that works on all the Pentax cameras, even the latest DSLRs, as it supports P-TTL as well as TTL flash, and can be used with digital and film cameras. I think this is an important factor consider if the lens is to be used as a walk-around lens. I love my DA*300 for its optical quality but I bought it specifically for relatively stationary wildlife photography. I find it too heavy to use as a walk-around lens. For that I use the DA55-300 PLM.

Still one of the best cameras ever released and still my favorite despite having used multiple other cameras from multiple brands. There is something magical about Pentax....

I read this very interesting article on Digital Trends about Pentax's approach to photography and camera design, expressed in their Principles of Pentax. It quotes the President of Pentax, Shinobu Takahashi, as saying: "At Pentax, we don’t design SLRs or mirrorless cameras based on which is superior or inferior in terms of technology. We believe that everything depends on which type of camera the user prefers because of the way it handles or captures a particular subject. We design SLRs that allow the photographer to sense and capture the light coming through the SLR-exclusive pentaprism. We’d like to help them create images using all the elements of their creative imagination." That certainly resonates with me. That is an interesting point. Film cameras used to have a lifespan of potentially decades, while modern DSLRs are effectively mini-computers in camera form, with a much shorter lifespan in general, notwithstanding the fact that plenty last 10 years or more. Maybe people's expectations are different in this area because of the lifespan of film cameras. I suspect that younger generations (at least younger than me!) don't expect cameras too last that long. Sad to say but it seems like electronic consumer goods have almost become disposable products. Look at the typical life span of cell phones.....

Anzac Bridge in Glebe, Sydney, Australia. I love the colors from my now 14 year old Pentax K100D. That is virtually straight out of the camera. Just resized for posting and very slight increased contrast.

I have found that my old Nikon SB-28 flash in AUTO mode on my Pentax K-3 consistently gives a better exposure than my more recent Pentax flashes in PPT-L mode. True, it doesn't have HSS or some of the other technical advantages of PPT-L, but for everyday use it is much better.

It's a shame as he did some very detailed and helpful reviews. Here is a detailed comparison between the D-FA 100mm macro lens and the FA 100mm as a good example: You Tube |

My dad was an engineer specializing in optical instruments and one thing he told me is to never store lenses (or any optical gear) in leather cases or bags. Leather, being an organic material really attracts fungus and mold. So I guess all those old 'vintage' cases are out!
It's probably best not to store camera gear in any bags. Best to just have it sitting on a shelf (if in an area of relative low humidity) or, even better, in a humidity controlled cabinet. That is the most expensive solution but the most effective. I live in a semi tropical area but since doing that I haven't lost any lenses to fungus while before I lost a few.

Yes, I am familiar with those books and even bought the book on the K-3, but good as they are as instructional books I was thinking more over an overview of the period. I'm very sorry to hear that by Yvon Bourque has passed away. I always respected his judgement and knowledge.

There have been some excellent books written on Pentax SLRs and lenses, including "Pentax SLR 35mm Cameras 1952-1989" by Danilo Cecchi (1990) and "The Asahi Pentax Way" by Herbert Keppler in 1979.
However, these earlier books only covered the film era. Are there any book you would recommend that cover the DSLR era? Yes, I know all the info is online, but sometimes it's nice to read a book for a change!
Thank you!

There are too many nooks in crannies in the body to risk that. If you really want to do that I'd remove the rubber part and spray paint it separately and then reglue it on to the body.
Alternatively buy a cheap broken body of any camera and spray paint that so you can see exactly what will happen before potentially ruining your K3.

Both the RED filter and the IR filter effects on the K7 and the K3 produce very nice photos too in B/W mode. Add a lot more contrast. Took me about two years to discover that! :) ---------- Post added 05-23-20 at 11:23 AM ----------
These in-camera filter effects are often derided but they can be very useful. Sure there are some gimmicky effects but some are quite useful. For instance, the IR effect in the K7 and K3 in B/W mode is particularly good. Yes, I know it's not 'real' IR but it's not bad for the occasional use without the bother of using filters or the expense of converting a camera to full-time IR use.

Yes, that makes sense. Just like everything film related too..... it's now become a niche market with prices to match.
