UV filters degrade image quality

OH MY GAD! Rogerstg Sir, sorry for un-necessarily prolonging this "useless" Filter controversy. Are we PROS?? Do we need to start worrying about that 3 to 5% deterioration in picture Quality if any by using a filter???
I am a decent Photog - Not a Pro - and I have Pixel Peeped at my photos using a good quality Clear Pro 1 Hoya MC Filter on my Lenses.
I HAVE HARDLY NOTICED ANY APPRECIABLE DETERIORATION IN PICTURE QUALITY with and without a Filter - blown the photo up 200%.
Why worry Rgerstg Sir??

Jim, you write very sensibly on Filters or plain protective glass filters. And TONNES have been written on Filters.
a) You need not use UV or Skylight Filters on your lenses for your costly Lens protection unless you want other Light Modifying qualities like cutting distant haze in Mountain Landscapes or the blue cast. I use Hoya Pro1 Clear Multi Coated Filters to protect my Lenses. These Filters are pretty expensive. I can buy still expensive ones like Cokin or B+W as Hoya gives me the best bang for my money.
b) I have done many experiments using my Lenses Filter-less. I always, repeat always use a Lenshood. After a weeks shooting on my Travels I find plenty of dust, stuck on spots that just not can be blown off, and other gunk. Now how do these land on my Lenses????
c) Here I was shooting at a Pier in San Francisco with a 55-300 mm HD SP WR Lens. A Gull sweeps over me dropping POO which hit my lens + the Lenshood. I run to a tap - 5 minutes away - and try to wash it away. My Lens and Camera is Weather Proof. I said to myself I will give it a good cleaning when I get back Home.
I notice a discoloration on my Lens. I try cleaning it away thoroughly with a Lens Cleaning Solution. Nothing. The Lens SP + HD Coating is Permanently Damaged. The Acidic Poo has eaten the Coating away.
d) There are very many stories where a Filter has saved the Lens as in a drop or heavy bang.

Lev, you do not mention the make of your Hoya Filter. The Philippines ones are NOT too reliable too. Also a fake filter can be spotted from the many giveaways like - the printing, the knurling, the blackening, the metal used, threading difficulty on to the Lens, rough threading with chatter marks on the thread and the glass (coating color, discolored spots/blotches, coating evenness, waviness of the glass, etc)

Hi Lev, there are quite a few people out there who have been cheated with cheap copies of the Hoya UV HMC Filters - fakes. Even Amazon has NOT been spared and Evil Bay is notorious. I have the Japanese made versions of Hoya Pro 1 filters and they are top notch. I have tried many comparative shots with and without filters and you can "hardly" make out any difference.
I even have the Japanese version of the HMC Hoya Filters and they still hold good.

Hi BigMacCam and SlartibatFart01 here is the DIY circuit from an old Smart Phone headphone with mic. It will auto focus, fire the shutter and also do a "B" shutter for the amount of time you choose.
I made a better one using my Film Film Camera Wired Remote F with an additional female pin to fire my electronic Film Pentaxes. So its originality is maintained when ever needed.

BigMacCam Sir, we are all things Russian lover including Russian Girls at the Tech camp in the Heavy Industries Divn Ranchi, India. My country is the largest importer of Russian Stuff since the Cold War and Kruschev days. We have close ties with Russia and I was a Technical Advisor for CIS countries in one of the largest conglomerates in the world. Russia like Israel always comes to our aid in our wars against Pakistan and China + other Terrorist attacks.
I have owned many Russian Cameras, Lenses, Binoculars and accessories since my University days - both 35mm and large format. None of them ever performed better than my Rolleiflex f2.8 TLR, or the Leica SLR or believe me the film Pentax K-1000 SE (Japan version) back in the '70s. Even my Spotmatic with Takumar Lenses were much sharper and colorful.
I also had a Nikon film SLR and the Kiev -19 that took Nikon Bayonet Lenses. The best Russian Lenses had terrible Flare on the Kiev. Their sharpness and color suspect - lens coating perhaps?
I do believe some Russian Lenses were good like the Mirror ones, but they never could out do German or Japanese technology. Russian Lenses were well built - like a Tank, period.
Come to think of it as an Engineer, all things Russian were over designed, huge and heavy including the Russian Rocket Engines we used for our Moon Mission.
Have fun with your photography. May Peace be with you - Loka Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu. Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi.

Pentax is a cult feeling for most. For some their first camera and served them well. For others a great bang for the buck with so many features and technology built in.

A good basic idea. But where is the quick sling action across the strap, normally achieved by a turnstile DIY Carabiner affixed to a Key Chain Ring.
Hey why bother when Evil Bay has a Pro Shoulder Sling Strap for US $ 5 yo 8.

Modifying an M42 to K adapter

I think he just wants the retaining spring lock to be removed for easy removal from the lens without having to use a tool or a screw driver to remove the Adapter from the Camera Body.
Just unscrew the tiny screw holding the spring to the Adapter Body.
In case you want a firm grip of the Adaptor on the lens just use some rubber glue on the threads. This way the Adaptor will not stay in the camera Body. And if required you can screw out the Adapter again from the Lens albeit with a little force or by using a softening liquid like WD-40.

K5IIs Perfect Camera for Me, Except the Low Light Focus Thing, Alternative?

The K-5 IIs is a Classic Pentax like the film K-1000 SE. I never have had this AF hunting problem except once in the Columbia Ice Field with a SWA Lens in very cold Foggy Misty conditions.
I never felt the need for the K-3 or the K-1. I have brutally sharp zoom lenses quite a few with f2.8 Apertures.

awscreo Sir, your choice of a 2x TC for your Tamron 70-200 mm lens for the intended subject is perfect. Also shooting for an eclipse requires manual focusing. So I suggest go to the nearest Mom & Pop Stores and try out a few 2x TCs in the Stores for sharpness.
The one near my house in the Bay Area - Kaufmann Cameras - has some 20 to 30 of them for $ 5 to 12. Some known and unknown Brands are darn good.
I have the Pentax F 1.7x AF Converter - between 2x & 1.4x - and is a very good Made in Japan piece. Plus I also have the Vivitar "A" 2x Macro TC, another decent one. Picked up brand new for $ 15 from a Pawn Broker in the Bay Area.

Perhaps you need to watch the color of the water in the Niagara Falls photos. The HDR - if you have attempted it it - could be the culprit. The panoramic shots appear washed out & lack pop.

---------- Post added 06-30-17 at 05:23 PM ----------

The tree trunk colors are so off. Why?? Have you over done HDR?? Even the greens are over screaming. The first photo has a beautiful composition but lacks the peppy look. If I were using Lightroom, I would reset the photo to RAW or the as shot JPEG. Then use the Clarity & Dehaze sliders. I would play with the White & Black Sliders & finally go to the HSL Module to set the Luminance of the foliage and the green grass + the Blue of the Sky peeping through canopy of the trees.
But first get the tree trunk colors right.
