I just found a Flickr group called "Pentax Hong Kong." It's a small group and there aren't too many photos there, but we can change that!

Taken at Hong Kong Zoological/Botanical Garden on a beautiful, sunny day last week. I saw the male shortly after I saw this female but I wasn't quick enough to get a shot. The male is stunning.

Here are a few from me. I had a day to wander around Hong Kong last week and the weather was fantastic. The first two were taken with my DA15 Ltd in crop mode and the rest were with my FA43 Ltd. All taken with my K-1 Mk II.

This is a new low for me in terms of my tardiness getting a new thread started or passing the torch. Good thing I didn't make any related New Year's resolutions!

I will get the next POTW started shortly...

My son bought a tank made of spent shell casings while in Vietnam when he was about 8 (I think it was at the Cu Chi Tunnels). Not surprisingly, it was confiscated at the airport. I suspect it went back to the vendor and was re-sold to another gullible tourist...

This is a great thread with some fantastic photos. Like most folks, I stayed close to home all year so no travel photos for me in 2020. Fortunately there is no shortage of things to photograph in Hong Kong, and probably more than 50% of my photos for the year were macros of various bugs. Hong Kong has been in better shape than much of the world and we've still been able to get out and explore. So here are 10 of my favorites for the year (I tried to include some non-macros). I'll split it into two posts too, though I also think it's probably an anachronistic requirement... POTW participants will probably recognize all of these.

A temple in Shau Kei Wan. I love the smell of incense and the dark, smoky atmosphere. I think I could take a thousand photos and never quite capture it but I like the way this one turned out:
IMGP1353 by xtimwilsonx, on Flickr

This was on the island of Tung Ping Chau, the farthest east of Hong Kong's islands. It's part of the Hong Kong Global Geopark and it has interesting geography and history:

A changeable lizard in the bushes near my house:

---------- Post added 01-01-21 at 09:25 PM ----------

And the rest of my top 10:

One of the prettiest spiders I've ever seen (in a bamboo stand near my house). It wouldn't stay still so it was hard to get a decent shot but I'm happy with this one:

A beautiful blue-banded bee seen on a night safari near Tung Chung:

A street cat in the village of Tai O, a historic fishing village where many houses are built on stilts over the water (and a popular hiking destination):
IMGP6472 by xtimwilsonx, on Flickr

My favorite for this year, a red-whiskered bulbul on Lantau Island. A very common bird here but they're charming and beautiful. I submitted this one as my best of the year:
Red-whiskered Bulbul by xtimwilsonx, on Flickr

An MTR (subway) sign showing evidence of vandalism from the pro-democracy protests that were largely squelched by the pandemic. MTR was, at some points, considered too China-friendly and stations and signs bore the brunt of much protestor frustration:

Does anyone (ever) just shoot in-camera B&W JPEG?

I've been playing with some SOOC B&W jpgs lately, partly inspired by B&W posts from people with GRIIs and GRIIIs, but also just because I'm not traveling these days and am finding myself in places that I've already photographed multiple times (and some that are kind of mundane anyway), so there's little risk of "missing something." I haven't found a good "recipe" that I really like but I've played with the Bold Monochrome digital filter (with "hardness" reduced) a bit (but processing time is definitely an issue) and also used the Monochrome custom image setting. I usually cheat and shoot Raw+, which I suppose is contrary to your original post...

Overall I am very impressed with the quality of jpgs out of my K-1 II and am more willing than ever to use them (as long as I don't screw up the white balance, which is usually my issue...).

My contribution for the week. I didn't take any photos at all until yesterday. I rode the "ding ding" from Central to Shau Kei Wan in Hong Kong. Always a pleasant way to kill some time. Hong Kong has the world's largest double-deck tram fleet still in operation (since 1904). The weather was lovely. All of these were taken with my K-1 Mk II and FA 43 f1.9 Ltd.

The end of the line at Shau Kei Wan. Trams staged for the return trip (I used Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 for the B&W):

A rather cooked photo of an old building (I used the "high contrast" digital filter on my K-1). Lots of history here (I don't know what the writing says - I assume it's the name of a business that once occupied the space):

Another cooked apartment building...

Plenty of time! Especially as I've been a bit tardy lately with POTW transitions... Is it some kind of ibis? The lily is gorgeous.

I'll kick off the next POTW!

Thanks Tom and right back at you! I love the pileated woodpeckers. There are some woodpeckers in Asia but I've never seen one. Nice ibis too. I see them when I visit Florida but I guess I've never seen a juvenile.

Thanks for joining us this week! Nice moon and adorable feline portrait. And I like the broken-down barn too!

Another fine moon! Some nice colors in your second shot - I'll bet you'll get a keeper out of it.

Looking forward to it!

Really nice photos coming out of that thing! I love the colors and tones of these photos. The sharpness and subject isolation in #2 seem like something you would need a macro lens for.

Thanks for joining us. The B&Ws are very atmospheric. I especially like #2.

Very nice - spectacular colors!

The Bree portrait is fantastic - very nice lighting. And a great capture of the jaunty titmouse.

Thanks to everyone who participated. It was a great POTW!

I'm away from home this weekend (stay-cationing) and may not get next week's POTW up-and-running today. If someone wants to get it started please feel free. Otherwise I'll try to get to it tonight or tomorrow sometime.

A lot of people think of Hong Kong as urban, concrete jungle. In actuality something more than 30% if its land area is green space. Hiking opportunities abound and trails are beautiful. Lightly inhabited islands with beautiful bays and beaches are a short ferry ride away. The variety of butterflies and moths here is stunning. There is a lot of history and culture, so lion dances, fire dragon displays, WWII-era defensive tunnels, Hakka villages and "bun festivals" are all on offer throughout the year. Buildings on both sides of Victoria Harbor are decorated with Christmas lights every year and the historic and photogenic Star Ferries cost less than 50 U.S. cents to cross the harbor. Vibrant downtown areas present unlimited street photography options. And in normal times places like Cambodia, Thailand, Japan, The Philippines, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam etc. are all a short flight away.

My time in HK will be coming to an end next summer and I'll be heart-broken...

Great week for POTW! Thanks to everyone who participated.

Tom - Beautiful sunset and the warblers are fantastic!

It's nice to see some other HK photos. I saw a tortoise like that on the beach in DB a few years ago. It was being "walked" by its owner. Maybe the same one...

I like the light too. And the neglected bicycle. I especially like the lighting on your first leaf photo!

Looks like fun! And a nice sunset to boot!

Nice series Noel. The self-portrait is almost spooky! I have a soft spot for millipedes and spiders.

Thanks again everyone and I'll get another POTW going here in a little while...

I finally got out and took some non-macro photos! I went to an island called Tung Ping Chau on Sunday. It's the easternmost island of Hong Kong. It's very small and very close to China (closer to China than to Hong Kong). It was a beautiful day and I even went for a swim. All of these were taken with my K-1 Mk II and my DA 16-85 zoom, which doesn't get much use these days but was a good choice for the day since I only wanted to bring one lens...

Great rock formations along the shore:

Quite a few bits of pottery among the shells:

And lots of ruined structures:

I suspect this was here for the benefit of tourists like us:

Thanks everyone for participating. Some great photos again this week.

Very nice! I especially like the leaf.

Great series! Hard to decide which one I like best, but the surf-casting photo is definitely a winner.

Thanks for joining us Tomas! I especially like the church and pigeons photo but I'm also a sucker for butterflies and cats...

Nice. I really like the colors and reflections in #2.

Nice collection as usual. #1 is outstanding!

Nice heron Eva!

The frost pictures are great!

Sorry I'm late this week. I had a hard-drive melt-down that interrupted my weekly schedule. Catastrophe averted at least... I'll get another POTW started...

Here's my contribution for the week. My wife and I went out for a night hike in a nature reserve here in Hong Kong. Lots of little critters. Did a little walking around town before our safari. All photos taken with my K-1 Mk II. The first two with my 43mm f1.9 Ltd and the rest with my D FA 100mm WR macro (with my still relatively new AF160FC ring flash).

Well, another week has passed us by. Thanks to everyone who contributed!

Great photos Eva! I especially like #4 and #5. The pup doesn't look too happy!

Clever shot! Thanks for joining us this week.

Wow. Stunning colors!

Great insect photos! I especially like the dragonfly in flight and the black and yellow critter. And who doesn't like woodpeckers?

Very moody shot. It looks like a branch has been rubbing that fence for years. Good one!

I'll get next week's POTW going now (so I can post more insects, of course...).

I'm continuing my long string of macro shots on POTW. One of these days I'll get out and take photos of something other than bugs!

I rescued a few bugs from a swimming pool today.

I think it's a gold-dust weevil:

I fished 6 or 7 of these out of the pool but unfortunately only 2 made it.

This one wasn't a rescue. Spotted napping nearby:
