Pentax-FA j 18-35 vs Tokina 19-35

The comparison is meaningful again now that there is a full-frame camera, so here's my fresh input:
– The Tokina is sharper, especially in the corners. In the dead centre, not so much difference
– The 19 mm of the Tokina actually seems to be 20 mm.
– You will get closer focus with the DA-J
– Both are rather soft at 35 mm.
– Both produce a lot of flare, and have a bluish cast.
– Neither one makes sense on APS-C. On the K-1 they make sense if you cannot for some reason (money or weight) carry along the DA 15-30 or FA 12-24.
– The build quality of the Tokina is much nicer. The DA-J is all plastic. Both are comparatively small and light.
– Focusing may need heavy correcting with the Tokina (mine needs fine adjustment -9)
Attached some comparative images - of the lenses, and the 12-24 for comparison, and one shot at 18/20 mm and f 5.6 with the DA-J (left) and the Tokina. Same scene, two months apart - sorry I can't make it simultaneously, since my DA-J is no longer operational.

River artistry

Had already decided not to vote for one of the river/lake reflections when I came upon this. It's using the reflection fully to create an artistic illusion, it's simple and well composed. The only small improvement I would think of is correcting the horizon a tiny wee bit (but the edges are sensitive, I know).

repair of 60-250 lens

Resurrecting an old thread because I found this really valuable piece of advice on reviving an SDM lens – in minutes, at no cost. Mind you, sending the lens in for repairs don't always do the trick: been there, done that. But this did it for my 60-250:

Focal length isn't always what it's said to be?

Yeah, I did some more testing on the long zooms and found that focusing on infinity evens out the field. The "focus breathing" phenomena seems to reach up to some 30 feet with these lenses.
Still, it means that if you are into for example flowers or butterflies you should reach for the 200-mm DA 200 and not for the longer zoom, which will give you a smaller magnification at it's closest distance (tested that, too). And the Tamron also appears not to be affected by the focusing distance.

Focal length isn't always what it's said to be?

While pixel-peeping my lenses I've stumbled across a surprising phenomena: The field of view of certain lenses do not correspond to their stated focal lengths.
Either I have not understood the laws of physics (optics) correctly, or the focal lengths claimed do not hold.
Most recently I've noticed this comparing my DA 60-250 and my DA 200, both on the K-1. It turns out the magnification of the DA 200 is greater than of the DA 60-250 – and not only with the zoom at 200 either, but even with the zoom at 250! Judging from this, the real maximum focal length of the zoom is about 180 mm.
I also compared the two lenses to the Tamron 70-200 – and here the 200 really was identical to that of the DA 200.
I've earlier noticed the same kind of thing with the FA 28-105/3,2-4.5, which really should be a 28-88/4-5,6, if the comparisons with other lenses are anything to go by. I assumed Pentax having cut corners a bit with that lens – old, affordable – but not with the DA 60-250.
For me, my first takeaway on this is that the DA200 gives me more of a reach than the DA 60-250, somewhat surprisingly.

Any thoughts?

It can also be some fun. This is what you get with handheld pixelshift and K-1 in bright daylight. An extra bonus is the cabriolet at right. It was freezing cold.

Installing Digital Camera Utility with no CD drive

Actually its even easier than that. Don't need the Terminal stuff: you can create an empty file in the text editor of a Mac, name it Digital Camera Utility 5.app and save it to the Applications folder. Then find the updater and it will "update" the empty file to a working application.
Finding the updater is bewilderingly hard. I found it on the Swedish Richoh site, and there only the 5.6.1 version actually downloaded, though there were links supposed to find newer versions.
5.6.1 will open up in Yosemite. Remains to see wether it's of any use.

And if you get another Cactus trigger you should be able to put the 360 on top of that and trigger it by radio too alongside your RF60s. More reliable than optical trigger, especially in daylight.

DA* 60-250 mod for FF

And thats for sure not Swedish discourse. Did you have a gulp of punsch before you wrote it?

To the point: It's not necessary to grind away more than the corners. And if there's a lesson to be learned from the (harmless) esthetic misfiguration above it would be not to use a machine tool at all but a simple hand file, with which it's easy to work inside the tube. The metal is in not exceptionally tough.

You don't have to separate the glued parts (tube and baffle) and you don't have to remove more than the corners. Probably you don't even have to remove the two screws holding the SDM-contacts, at least not while taking the things apart since it's lifted off together with the other black parts anyway. Time spent – 30 minutes including washing and drying the parts.
Mine looks like this after modification, works fine although my naughty dremel chuck chew away a piece of the aperture lever protection in the process.

P-TTL on AF540 GZII - Can you disable preflash?
Posted By Kameraten

I would go for manual mode. I assume the 645D behaves like other Pentaxes so when you set it to M you can set the AF540 to M too, and then you can regulate it's output to whatever fraction is needed to trigger your slaves. Then there will be no pre-flash.
With the camera in M you might want also to set the flash sync on-camera to second curtain. That way you will be able to set shutter and aperture to what the ambient light suggests just by pressing the green button. And you might want to modify the way the green button works with M so that it for example works like aperture priority. I think you'll find that option in the menus.

DA* 60-250 focus issue

My lens eventually needed servicing at a repair shop, they changed the assembly with the tabs for 70 euros. But of course the new assembly is hardly any better than the old one. If you see your small tab is just starting to move, you might try to get a small drop of some suitable glue under it and let it dry with some pressure applied.

Worse, but most likely unrelated: After just an hour of use the whole SDM in my lens failed and had to be fixed, for another 300+ euros.

Let me put this way: since I myself got a very faulty K-3 only three months ago I don't think the risk is non-existent. Thus it makes sense to look for alternatives. Yes, there are some other differences between models, which can be discussed elsewhere.

I don't think we know the likeliness of getting a faulty camera in NYC or elsewhere. But you might consider the K-S2 which has a few very useful features (flip screen, wifi) lacking from the K-3, and a more sensible pixel count. Seems the specs of the K-3 beats it only when it comes to focusing points and choices.

In-camera sharpening adjust question

There can be a reason for keeping some sharpening on even if you process only RAWs: without some sharpening all your pictures will look misfocused on the camera screen and you will not be able to tell when you hit or miss.

Surprises me too since this seems like a zoom range tailored for 35 mm film. I've used this lens only on digitals and it's optics really are a mixed bag. With the K-5's the performance seemed so poor I mostly left it sitting on the shelf, but now again with the K-3 somehow it seems better. Semi-serious testing always showed it to be sharper than the comparable Sigma 28-105, but there is a softness combined with a very cold color rendition that introduced color noise – until the K-3, that is.
Small, reasonably fast, a great range and size for a walkaraound lens. And affordable. Not a bad buy if you find one.

To pinbalwyz:

Before repairs my K-3 really felt unreliable in a very erratic way, starting with missing the occasional exposure. But after repairs it feels quite different, doing what it's expected to. I don't think all the K-3:s are flawed. I certainly hope not.

Got a K-3 Limited which exhibited small problems like empty frames from Day 1 getting successively worse – excessive shutter noise, no live view – so I sent it in for repair after a week. According to the repair shop the front housing assy was replaced, that's the whole mirror drive unit. It took only a couple of days and now everything seems to be fine. Warranty covered, of course.
The s/n 25785XX was within the range of suspects.
