Should I take my 31mm ltd to Costa Rica?

Having been there on numerous occasions, I don't know if the 31 (which I have) will be useful or not. It depends on where you are going. In any case, make sure you have a DrySack or similar waterproof bag. Cheap and effective.

Need help with 150-450 focusing issue

I don't own a K1 but I assume things like focusing are similar to my K3II. Were you using AF.C? Select or Spot? It could be that your focus point on the white rocket did not provide enough contrast to focus. Moving the focus point to a place with more contrast might have helped.

I live on the "Space Coast". Recently the winds have been 15 - 20 mph+ after 9 or 10 AM. At the beach, the wind velocity is greater and that could be the culprit despite having your camera on a tripod.

Also, did you shoot with a button press? Another possible culprit.

I have seen numerous Pentax digitals in my travels both in the US and Central America. The most interesting sighting was this.

I was at the Caracol Mayan ruins in Belize. Caracol is a good sized site in the Belizean rain forest but 35 miles from any populated place (except for a checkpoint on the road to it). It does not get a lot of visitors due to its remoteness. I was standing on a ruin thinking about a shot I was going to take and a couple walked into the plaza near where I was standing. He had a camera - a K10 if I remember correctly. I think on that date at Caracol, Pentax dslr's could have been in the majority.

FGZ 360 pouch - follow up

This post is meant to add to the collective knowledge base of the forum. I previously raised the question of what might be a replacement pouch for the 360 FGZ flash. One responder suggested Yongnuo but no one knew for sure if the 360 fit it. I ordered the Yongnuo replacement pouch for models 560, 565, and 568 from B&H for $6.95.

It is very similar to the pouch for the 540FGZ in appearance and materials, and just slightly larger. So both the 360 and 540 fit in it . Additionally, the Yongnuo has a small inner pouch that will hold 4 AA batteries. I assume this pouch will work for the II versions of these flashes but I do not know that for certain.

Yea. It's "the crumbled to pieces" that made me ask the question in the first place although in my case it took six or seven years. Thanks to all who replied.

Does anyone know where to get a flash pouch that fits the 360 flash nicely? Does the Yongnuo flash pouch work?

How do I love Pentax... Let me count the ways!

Similar sentiments to Bobphoenix but not exactly the same path. First camera - Petri and I believe I sold it soon after I spotted my first Pentax, an Asahi Spotmatic. It was stolen from my house in 1977. I used the insurance money to buy an ME with an M 50 1.4 and an M 135. Later on a PZ1P which is in a tie for my favorite Pentax camera with my current K3II. My "association" with Pentax is longer than with any company of any type I can think of. REI is second by a few years.

SMC Pentax-FA 100mm F2.8 Macro

As I understand things, your problem is lighting at 1.1. You might try a ring light which can be had for well under $50. I have the DFA 100 macro and a Neewer ring light which I use successfully. From the front glass to the end of the ring light when mounted is no more than 6cm. Given a 13cm working distance (as one poster has noted), I think this leaves plenty of room to get done what you want. I can verify all this later and post my results if you would like.

What to carry for Cuba trip?

I've done a lot of traveling in Central America whose weather is similar to Cuba. If your 16-50 is the weather-sealed version, I would take it and a dry sack.

You might want to read a bit of a classic on close-up photography before you go too far. Try "The Manual of Close-up Photography" by Lester Lefkowitz. I searched for it and immediately found a copy for $3.64 plus shipping. I am sure there are other copies available.

At maximum range with the converter, you are effectively using a 525 mm lens on a 35 mm camera. Shake reduction helps but you will still have to shoot at high speed or get some support or both. J
