Ricoh WG-7

Given that I have a Pentax Optio W80, voted the worst camera of 2009...which I used for many years sea kayaking. When I upgraded last year to the WG-6, I felt like I stepped in to a new generation of water proof cameras. Big technology jump for sure. Skimming the previous comments, I can't imagine adding much more to the WG-6 than, clearly shooting in RAW, and a few menu changes, but who knows what will be added or not? Considering that my old W80 had terrible low light performance as was noticed in reviews than and by me as well, jumping 10 years forward is naturally a great improvement. Watching the evolution of the Pentax/Ricoh water proof cameras over the past 11 years, they just seem to keep adding stuff as they go along.

I think Serkevan has it correct, the entire point is weatherproofing. I just returned from a 5 day camping / kayaking trip to a lake in the mountains. I took my K-1II+several lenses for hiking, and the WG-6 for paddling. Quite happy with that combo and if a WG-7 had been available last year, I'd be using it instead.

I agree with this post.

If I remember correctly, before I got my 15-30, I had my eye on the Sigma lens. Passed on it and have never looked back. For me as a landscape shooter, the DFA 15-30 is my go to lens.

Darn, I just sold mine. That is a really good adapter. I have also been selling off most of my 6x7 lenses so, I'm going to pass this up. So this is a bump for the right 6x7 to 645 adapter,

Yep, that happened to mine a few years ago. I had Eric Henderson fix it. Took a while then to get parts but he did it. He is well known on this forum and does great work.

K-1 II Sporadic Recording of GPS Coordinates in EXIF

I have had this happen with my K-1, now a K-1II, and 645z, K-5, and K-3 with the GPS tracker mounted on the camera hot shoe. As FozzFoster said, you have to have sight of enough satellites...try getting a location deep in an southwestern slot canyon...not gonna happen. But being aware of this, I usually (and more so with the external GPS tracker) have to allow it to locate itself when I'm in a new area, this can take a short time to several minutes. After that I can turn on and off the camera and usually the GPS will reestablish it's position fairly quickly, but sometimes I shoot quickly thinking the camera has a good fix when it didn't have that until later shots.

My sorta rule is that I don't shoot until the satellite icon on the LCD is green or at least yellow.

That said, if you are sure that your camera has a good fix and it still does not record location, that would be a potential problem in my book, but for me this happens when I thought the GPS was good to go but it wasn't yet.

The Van Gogh Lens

I too have the SMC variant within reach. It does not have the rear gelatin holder though. I had no idea that a fisheye lens could be equated to Van Gogh's paintings. Brilliant. He is my favorite painter anyway, but this adds another layer of respect for me. Oddly, when I got back into photography in 2008, one of the first lenses I bought for my K-10d was the DA 10-17 fisheye. I have to say and said then, that it led me for the first time to really 'see' what photography could capture that the eye can not. Thanks for posting this. Very cool.

Pentax 67 - Beginner Help Needed - I can't find the ISO!

You need a light meter. Sekonic makes good ones. The 308 is very handy for the 6x7. Products | Sekonic. I would add to @Lord Lucan's post, that finding one of the TTL viewfinders is not easy. Also, they are - apparently - subject to breaking. You gotta find a good and working meter. All that said, a hand held meter is the way to go really.

50-135mm with SDM failure, worth the buy?

I had @UncleVanya here convert my DA*16-50 and 50-135, both of which were working with sleepy SDM. He did a great job, at a very reasonable price and very workable turnaround time. I did it to just get over the SDM issue. Prior to getting my K-1 those two lenses formed a great couple of lenses for lots of things. Now with the screw drive only, they are zippy at focusing. I agree with c.a.m above that if the lens is in good shape optically, get it and just convert it yourself or by @UncleVanya.

Yes, I've used that info and actually keep a record of the specific lens hood model for each lens that I own, but knowing the model isn't a way to get to potential substitution.

General lens hood replacement problem

Ok, so I've been a member of this forum for like 13 years or so and I own way too much Pentax gear - I'm sort of a recovering LBA/GBA addict. So you'd think I would know how to answer this generic question, but... here goes:

[Rant on] Why, why, why is it so difficult to find replacement parts for Pentax lenses? Accidents happen, lens caps fall of, the removable door on many lens hoods falls of or out of the gear bag, or something on the lens hood breaks. So...you need to buy a new one. Just try to find one of those. Not from Pentax, not from Amazon, not from B&H (etc.), not from eBay, and not from my local store either. Why is it so hard? Mostly these are just plastic - ok, some are metal and have the same problem of loosing them as well, but is it so hard to have a source of replacement stuff?[Rant off]

Occasionally, I see posts about generic brand hood replacements from ? China, or? I haven't been able to locate such a source. Ideas?

Is there a spread sheet that says which lens hood goes with which lens or could be used on another lens?

Now, I know that there are some work arounds:

1. Gaffer tape over the filter hole.
2. Just work with the filter hole open.
3. Find some generic rubber collapsible screw in lens hood.
4. Glue the broken thing back together and hope.
5. ?

While I understand that there are a lot of lens hoods out there but you'd think that you should be able to buy a new hood for any and all lenses currently in production. But my experience is just plain hit or miss.

Example (and what precipitated this post):
Part A. I dropped my FA 645 35mm lens yesterday and cracked the hood for it. The filter door dropped out and I recovered both. Trying the gluing today and hoping solution. Could actually have gotten a new one from Pentax @ $99 for a new one, ebay for about $44 or so. As far as I know, this lens is still in production, so I do have some choices.

Part B. A while back I lost the filter door from my DFA*50 f1.4 lens. Do you think I can find a replacement hood for that, a star lens? Nope. Nowhere. I may be reduced to going with the Gaffer tape solution.

The lack of any reliable source of supply is and has been and continues to be annoying. What, if anything can we do about this? While I'm looking for specific solutions to my example above, my point here is to poll the forum for other ideas to this problem. I want OEM parts, that's all, not too much to ask for really.

[ok, I feel much better now. :hmm:]

645z: how to correctly remove the lenses

I read this and first said, 'this is an issue?' So, I got out my Z and tried it myself. I kinda see why you are asking now.

So, what I automatically find myself doing is to 1) put the LCD of the camera against my chest, 2) grip the lens to be removed in my left hand (mostly, but I tend to support the camera a bit too with my left hand, 3) using my right middle or ring finger, I push the lens release and turn the lens to the right, and off it comes.

I suppose it depends to on the size of your hands but that's what I do. When it's on a tripod, I recall I tend to remove it from the front of the camera, right hand turning the lens, left pushing the release button.

Hope that helps. Honestly, it's essentially what I do with my k mount cameras as well. Now if you were asking about the Pentax 6x7...now that's a different story and is a handful.

:)

Afterthought, I don't think it really matters whether the lens is a 645 A, FA, DFA lens (or as I first had to remove a 6x7 lens with a 6x7 to 645 convertor on it, same process) with this either. Ok, I'll grant you if you are rocking say the enormous 645 FA 600 lens, you might need a slightly different process...just sayin'

LS 67 Lenses on Pentax 645Z and 645D

Interesting question. Could not remember myself. I have the Pentax 67 LS f4 100mm lens. I also have the Pentax made 67 to 645 adapter. Just pulled out my 645z and gave it a test. Answer: yes the equipment I tested works as expected. The 645z triggers both the regular side of the LS lens and stops down when the shutter is pressed and also triggers the LS shutter of the lens. I also tested my 645 75LS lens on my z as well (I hadn't used it in a while). I would say that the 67 LS lens and the 645 LS lens function as they should on the Z. One difference is that the 67 lens and adapter have no electrical contacts so lens state info like aperture or LS speed do not pass to the 645z exif data, while my 645 LS lens does and some info is passes to the camera.

Also, I did not test the flash trigger pc connection on either lens but I would expect them to work normally as well.

Happy buying.
