300mm plus Lens Club: discuss your long lenses

Thanks. This is a difficult lens to use; in the 400-500mm range it is only somewhat acceptable stopped down to f/9 or so. But when you get the right mojo or whatever it is, the results can be gorgeous.

I'm slowly getting accustomed to the Sigma 170-500. Here at 500mm on a K-1, taken in a zoo:

June is finished, and I'm not sur how I feel about it.

On the one hand, the new FA 35 is a really good lens. Quite sharp, resistant to flare, with well controlled aberrations. It is no macro lens, but quite usable for close-up shots, even if cropping helps sometimes. Lastly, the focal lenght suits me. I know many would like it to have an onboard focus motor and to be weather-sealed, but I feel it is better in a small and lightweight package.

So why am I not overly enthusiastic? The month has been quite busy (june always is, with music day taking a lot of the available time), and I could not shoot as much cityscape as I would have liked. It is a shame as the lens shines here, but I just couldn't find the time most days. I also missed three days completely, but this is to be expected in this challenge and it did not bother me overmuch. No single in july for me nonetheless, I need to breathe. :)

I hope you get better soon!

I had no time to post in the last few days but I'm still shooting, I just have to find some time to process my photos. Completely forgot about the theme yesterday, though.

A pelican I shot at the zoo at Amnéville. It looks like a spot-billed pelican to me, can anyone confirm?

Howdy,

I just got myself a brand new FA-35; I guess I will play with it for some time so I might as well try the challenge again. :)

One of the few shots I took with my Auto Panorama 55 f/1.4. An old m42 lens, I think it was also sold as Porst (I found a picture of a Porst that lookd very much like it). I bought it last year for a few euros, never really used it until I remembered I had it a couple of weeks ago.

Hello,

I know I'm a bit late on this thread, but has anyone been able to try the v6ii + 48AF-1 combo? The 50 is officially supported, so I would guess the 48 works too, but I'd love to get a definite answer.

Thanks for your answers everyone.

Is this wireless system fully manual or is it camera system-dependent? I have seen Canon and Nikon versions of Godox triggers, I'm unsure whether they can be used with a Pentax camera.

Hi,

The Godox SK400II looks too cheap to be honest to my unexperienced eyes. Does anyone have experience with it? Is it worth trying?

I am an (almost) absolute beginner with studio flashes, having used them only a couple of times, so I don't really know what to look for.

Macro Cicada

There are a lot of cicadas in southern France. We saw quite a lot in the Corbières last year, but they seem to be much more shy in Provence; nonetheless we managed to spot a couple yesterday.

I'm officially out for this month. I haven't been able to find time and motivation to shoot for the last 6 or 7 days and I don't see things improving in the next week.

I've been sick for a few days, so I missed yesterday and still may miss more, but I'm trying.

Also, it looks like this month is going to be square month for me.

Hi folks!

I just received an F 135 f/2.8 this very morning. This probably calls for a month-long test run. ;-)

Yes, I already have focal length here, but it is disabled when the lens itself reports its focal length, it is only usable with full manual or A lenses.

So, I got myself a used 2x TC, a Kenko Pz-AF 2x Teleplus MC7, which turns my Tamron into a 140-400 f/5.6. I did some test photos this weekend, here is a quick debrief:
  • I was looking for "a 300mm-ish lens", now I know even 400mm is not so long.

  • The IQ of the 70-200 + TC combo is better than what I get from my 100-300.

  • Autofocus works. I got quite a lot of misses, but things got better after I dialed a -5 AF adjustment. I guess some fine tuning could get me better results still, but I found the focusing accurate enough after the adjustment.

  • SR is an issue. I don't know if there is a way to override its focal length setting, but if there is it is off on my K-1, and I didn't find how to change it with a cursory search through the menus.

  • The tripod collar of the 70-200 is not adapted to a K-1 behind a large converter. Reversing the collar improves things somewhat, but it's still not perfectly balanced.

  • Would I get better results with a DFA 150-450, or even a DA* 300? Probably. Is it worth the extra money? Not in my case.

Here are a few test shots, all of them more or less heavily cropped, with 100% crops for illustration of what you can get with this combo. The butterfly is tonemapped, the others received only minor editing.

Thanks for all the advice.

The 150-450 seems great but it is definitely too heavy for me. I am prone to shoulder tendinitis and there's no way I will be able to carry 3kg of camera and lens for several hours. The DA* 300 is still near the top of my list; I guess I will try the 70-200 with a used teleconverter first as it is far more affordable and at worst I will resell the converter with a minimal loss.

If the 2x converter doesn't cut it, I guess I will have a closer look at the DA 1.4x converter; there is a Pentax shop in Paris where they will have it in stock. If the TC with 70-200 is good enough that's great, if not I guess I will have to get a DA* 300. :-)

An old 400mm may be fine but I really want AF. I may get a long manual lens as well in the future, maybe a 500mm mirror lens, but this is not what I am looking for at the moment.

Makes sense. There are a few in the 100+ euros range on ebay, I will get one and try it. I was hoping to get a 1.4x or 1.5x but they seem much less common.
