20mm FF lens?

Thanks to all for all the advice. I'll be revisiting this thread as I have time. For now, I'll use a single position shot on a tripod, no panning no stitching. I'll do 2 shots from that position. One shot at a high f stop (whatever it takes) for corner sharpness and one shot (pixel shifted) at a stop for best sharpness overall, other than the corners. Then I'll replace the unsharp corners with the sharp corners in post. Seems like a quick enough solution that still uses the whole sensor rather than cropping out the corners. So now I just need to pick and purchase the lens.
At some point in future, I'll probably wind up doing automated panning cropping and stitching for massive tack sharp prints, since that's really going to be best when I have more money and time for the learning curve.

20mm FF lens?

Hi
MY QUESTION: What's the sharpest 20mm FF lens (third party lens ok) option for k1 that has filter threads (no funky hood thread adapters) and little or no vignette issues when using the screw on filter GND.

Here's what I'm doing with it.
Now that I have a Pentax K1, I would like to produce an image using the whole sensor (not crop mode) to produce the largest sharpest print I've ever made. This is to be a landscape shot with the subject matter in each corner that needs to be sharp in the extreme corners. This will be a pixel-shift shot with nothing moving in the scene. This will have nothing closer than 20ft in the foreground and all in focus out to the clouds, so the f stop may be about 11 to help with corner sharpness and DOF.

Thanks for any help.

Can you give an example of any wide lens that is sharp in the corners at f5.6? I just tested 10 of my lenses. While many had nice centers at F8 None had good sharp corners until F11 and beyond.
My pentax F28 lens had to hit Fstop 14 to get sharp corners.

To RAWR I used the shutter count tool at this pentax forum to determine the shutter count. Check Camera Shutter Count and Manufacture Date

---------- Post added 03-18-19 at 08:15 PM ----------

I had paid about 850USD. The seller refunded me 350.
So my final price is 500. The camera looks mint condition and has passed all my tests.
So at that 500 price I'll take risk of keeping it with high miles and hope for the best.
I'll only be putting about 2 or 3k shots a year on it.
So the lesson I'll share for a pentax camera is always check the shutter count as a buyer and always disclose the actual checked count as seller, don't post a guess.

Nothing yet. I bought a used camera, the seller had said in the listing it has about 20k on the shutter count. Once I got it I checked the shutter count and found it be 148000k plus. So I told the seller I would like to return it. The seller offered to refund me 250 dollars if I would keep the camera and said that that would more than cover the cost of the shutter repair should one ever be needed. So I'm posting my question here to see if the $250 offered would really cover the shutter replacement cost or if that cost info is as wrong as the sellers shutter count info. In the meantime I'm testing the camera to see if there are more surprises. It seems to look mint and function right in all testing thus far.

Hi
Has anyone here with no warranty or insurance paid to replace a k1 Mark 1 shutter, if so how much did it cost you total for parts labor and insured shipping?
Thanks for any help.

Hey Sandy, you said "I always chimp the first shot in any shooting session." Is CHIMP an acronym" or a typo where you meant to say CHECK?

Thanks all for your comments. Part of the problem I was almost always looking thru the optical viewfinder at some small birds I was taking photos of during a continuous shooting burst. Trying to catch one in flight required all my attn to be on the birds.
I was not paying any attn to the LCD which does briefly show the message says "no card in camera" then disappears.
I thought about leaving memory card door open, but was concerned I might break the open door, stuffing this camera in a bag the next day not noticing the open door.
So since I have more than one card I'll adopt a policy of always swapping a card out for another card.

Is there a setting to disable the shutter or make an alarm sound or a huge warning sign " HEY PUT A CARD IN !" in the event I forget to put a memory card in the camera?
If there was any warning it was so small I did not notice.

Hi
I'm under the impression that when you use self timer that the camera assumes that it's on a tripod and shuts off shake reduction.
Therefore I did not include mentioning turning off SR.

Regarding Focus. I went for the pre focus on a cloud during daylight route, noting the position.
Also even though it's manual focus lens the camera does beep when the focus is locked in.
I don't know if the focus can lock in ans beep on a star or planet at night yet. I'l try tonight

Thanks, I'll need to discover exactly where this lens focuses at infinity and mark the lens body with a tiny white paint dot if needed.

---------- Post added 06-22-17 at 02:00 PM ----------

Sounds like I'll only need the Astrotracer for lesser ISOs and Longer FL lenses.

makes sense An F5.6 to F8 non tracked foreground shot perhaps.

Thanks I had no clue.

I'm new to astrophotography and need some help with creating a procedure list. Here's what I got so far.

K3II Astro Photography Setup Cheat Sheet.

Type of Astrophoto is:

A night Sky Photograph of Milky Way with some foreground features such Rocky crags.

No trails just static image with lots of crisp stars and galactic arm structure showing.

I want as little noise as is reasonably possible.

Assumes 14mm Rokiton/Samyang 2.8 lens (Aperture Ring must be set to A or it throws an error.)

1: Turn on Camera. (Since no astrophoto settings can be saved) All settings and calibration and lens focal length input, must be repeated every time the Camera powers up.

2: On Camera prompt to enter Focal Length. (The proper focal lenth of 14MM is not an available menu choice, so choose 15MM)

3: Hit Gps button and wait for satalite to have green bars.

4: Turn on Astro tracer found in Menu 2 via GPS

5: Do a precise calibration

6: Mount Camera to tripod.

5: Set ISO to around 1600

6: Make sure long exposure noise reduction is on.

7: Set file format to raw

8: Manual focus setting is grayed out in the menu so must be selected by physical camera lever.

9: Make sure long exposure noise reduction is on.

10: Twist lens focus ring as far as it will go towards infinity symbol.

11: Set exposure auto timer to 20 seconds.

12: Set self timer to 12 sec to avoid camera shake by shutter button depresion (I don't have a remote).

From what I've read it seems like this list must be close to a usable procedure.

Am I wrong about inability to save settings relevent to this type of astrophotography. ?

Did I leave out something?

Anybody care to help make this list better?

Thanks
For any help.
Frank
