On the other hand their recent track record - the last couple of years - is pretty indisputable, isn’t it?

It is exactly this kind of back-up and marketing support the brand would need for the worldwide market It wouldnīt take much to make different language versions of this.

Yes, that is a good price! More or less what the grips used to cost for the earlier flagship models.
It is a pity I already have one...

LUXHelsinki is an annual light festival arranged around the darkest time of the year.
Some of the landmarks of Helsinki get a rather bizarre new look for a couple of days...

The low light capabilities and DR of the K-1 come in handy!

Lenses and temperature and the 70-210

After using my gear frequently outside the specified temperature range I have learnt not to take the specified temperature range too literally. In my case we are usually talking about the low end, as up here we never have temperatures above 40 C. Only occasionally in the tropic my gear has been exposed to this high temperatures.
The manufactures want to limit their liabilities by playing safe with the specifications. Excluding batteries temperatures have never caused difficulties for me. However, I know the lubricants in some earlier Sigma lenses needed to be changed for use in cold weather.
Humidity is a bit different. Condensation has been discussed here several times. In tropical conditions fungus can be a problem. Would be interesting to know whether modern sealed lenses have a better track record in this respect.

What is the state of Pentax MF??

The same question has crossed my mind. However, in November Philippe Farreng , Ricoh Imaging Sales Manager for Europe, clearly confirmed the companys commitment to all three product lines, APS-C, FF and MF. Therefore it would appear logical to expect a new 645 after the K-new.

Biggest enlargement from K-1 you've been happy with?

I do big prints for exhibitions, but have to say I have not reached the limit for K-1 files yet. Fairly recently I made a 1m x 1,5 m reprint from an old K-10 10 MP file for exhibition use.
This was pretty much on the limits, did take some extraordinary tweaking in Photoshop. Nevertheless the result was just fine, even for gallery use. In addition to the pixel count the maximum enlagement size depends on a number of other factors. However, with similar precautions I would imagine you could triple the picture area using a K-1 file, provided the image itself is flawless.

Pentax K-3 vs K-1

Having owned them both the pros and cons:
K-3
+ fast frame rate
+ size and weight
+ pulling power due to lens factor
- high ISO performance

K-1
+ superior image quality
+ high ISO performance, dynamic range
+ somewhat better AF
- size,weight and price

I sold my K-3 and use the K-1 exclusively now. However, once the new APS-C body is available, I will probably buy it for telephoto use.

I like the flexibility of the articulated screen. I have not had any problems with it, not even in freezing conditions. Would love to see the design in future bodies.

Extremely low temperatures : What to expect and how to counter-balance it?

With the exception of batteries and humidity condensation (when returning to room temperature) the body is unlikely to cause problems. It is just as important to make sure your own gear allows you to stay outdoors long enough. Especially gloves/mittens and footwear can be critical.
When it comes to lenses, I know a couple of cases where the lubricant in Sigma zooms needed to be replaced to get the lens working in this kind of temperatures. Camera repair shops up here know what works in the winter. I have a couple of Sigma primes, which work just fine with their original lubricants. Mechanically complex zooms are more likely to be affected. My Pentax zooms have always worked fine at temperatures like this.

I have the magnifier on both crop and full frame bodies. The only drawback is that it somewhat limits your field of view . You need to move your eye position to see the edges. However, I still find it very usefull.

K3ii or K1

I have owned them both. To me the most important differences are:
- frame rate and speed. K-3 II has a much faster frame rate. If this matters for you, go for the K-3
- low light performance. Here the K-1 excells.
- Dynamic range: see above
- size and weight. K-1 is noticeably heavier. Depending on your lens choises this may or may not matter.

To me the MP number has become almost irrelevant. For my latest exhibition I had two K-3 shots (base iso) printed at 100 cm x 150 cm. With a bit of post processing they were just fine even for gallery use. If you do heavy cropping, extra MPs give you some leeway.

Had lovely spring weather in Helsinki today. Spent the whole afternoon skiing on the frozen sea off the coastline.
Bright sunshine on an open icefield creates extreme contrasts. The dynamic range of the K-1 passed the test with flying colours!

Flashes safe to use with Pentax KM (SLR similar to K1000)

I also have a KM. Bought this one new in the 70īs, and it still works. Over the years I have used various flashes with it. Mostly Metzes, but also other brands. Never had any problems with it. I suspect if there was something unusual with the camera I would have heard about it. The Pentax flash should definitely be safe to use with the KM.

This happens when you select any of the modes allowing the camera to make adjustments/corrections to the exposure. The reason is that the camera needs to have leeway for the adjustments. Therefore it does not allow you to start from the end of the scale.
