if you can find a copy of Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG ASPH Lens for Pentax AF, it's a good choice.

The Full Frame: What will make you buy it?

I thought about it a lot, but finally i got it. the main reason is to increase the versatility of my old FF lenses, many of them are dated but still quite nice.

I'm keeping both the K5 and K1. I'm somewhat of a pixel peeper and the old lens may be not as resolved with the K1 incredible resolution, but all that became mute compared to the significantly wider FOV that my old lenses already possess but were never realized (digitally speaking). You know all about that creamy bokeh from the nifty fifty 50/f1.4; the 35/f2; the 77/f1.8? and macro 100/f2.8? Now the entire photo compositions from these trusted lenses look even creamier, just because it's wider, thanks to FF!

I feel like i just got myself a second set of lenses with completely different performance characteristic, for free! :). And, boy oh boy, the K1 feels really nice. it's an awesome tool and very intuitive to use. I'm happy with the purchase.

Samsung NX3000 - Anyone have on, or suggest an alternative

I recommend the samsung NX300. It's a little bit older so probably a much better value than the NX3000, even though pricing may even be comparable, but you will get on-chip phase-detect auto focus in addition to contrast only of NX3000 (this is very significant when you shoot in low light condition like a dim-lit restaurant type, as the NX3000 will probably hunt forever , most likely can't focus, while the NX300 will latch focus much faster.
I tested the NX300 focus capability against the Pentax K5: quite comparable in speed and accuracy!
Have fun and good luck. As long as you're at it, I would try to get one with a fixed 16mm f2.4 instead of the consumer zoom lens, it makes a wonderful & light travel kit.

K-01 maximum flash sync speed?

Can anyone tell me the maximum allowed sync speed for internal/external flash on the K-01?

I am hoping that, without a mirror, Pentax will experiment with electronic shutter and allow higher sync speed than 1/180. Even the little Panasonic LX-3 & LX-5 can do that easily (i've tested it and found full sync on the compact cam up to 1/800, with loss of light occuring 1/1000 & up)

high speed sync capability would be cool.

TS4 or WG-2?

I got a WG-2 and do not regret it at all. The picture quality maybe mediocre, but the competitions were not that much better, if you are looking for top-notch stuff, you just can't get it in a waterproof camera. I exploit the camera 6-LED extensively for macro shots at work, where my working subjects are typically just a couple milimeters in size and typically require me to put the camera in tight spaces and crazy positions. I just put the plastic ring on the lens mount and place the camera pretty much directly on the subject, and i got great lighting with good details - no extra work required. Pentax should really exploit this 6-LED macro feature more in the next gen (brighter illumination and more adjustable ISO, for example), as the tiny sensor really work very well for macro. There's nothing like it in the market today.

here's some brown rice on a towel... not too bad for iso 800.

My first impressions on the K-01

stuff like this seems to be a firmware thing...
As a side note, i just got a Panasonic LX5 recently, its flash sync speed is impressive: I was able to get full flash sync 1/800 (built in & external flash or with slave), and reduced flash sync all the way up to 1/4000 (bult in flash)...
maybe just wishful thinking, by why couldn't the K01 use electronic shutter and up the sync speed?

Official Pentax K-01 Specifications Revealed

I think it's an interesting choice. Pros and cons of K5 vs K-01 aplenty, but one salient point as a mirroless, it must employ a different focusing algorithm altogether, and there will be no need for compensation lens-to-lens variations for focus accuracy for a contrast-detection focus. As far as focus speed, only time will tell, i do expect it would not be as fast as the K5. I believe phase detection is inherently superior for predictive focusing.

Samsung releasing an 85mm soon? and some personal opinion.

It would be really interesting if the CDAF is really faster than a PDAF if one put it on a same level comparison. Oly EVIL camera have a smaller sensor coupled with shorter lens to produce the same equivalent image. Just from the fact that the lens is shorter, it does not need too much movement to put everything in focus. A serious challenge would involve low contrast, moving subject (not left to right, but near to far), poor light condition, and duplicate FOV camera/lens setup.

CDAF cannot tell whether the subject is moving away or toward the camera, so it cannot perform predictive calculation. PDAF will always have an advantage in this respect.

I have a Samsung NX100 and a K20D. Same chipset. When lighting situation is good, your subject stand still and well contrasted, the NX system can compete neck-to-neck without the added weight. It is when I have to deal with dicey situation such as very low light and low contrast situation, the K20D will shine due to its superior phase detection autofocus.

I know the NX100 is not a NEX. But i doubt that gap will improve since the law of physic is in favor of phase detection, i have a hunch that the NEX system would have a similar problem. Without a beam splitter, i don't know of a way that contrast detection could improve. Hence, I think that EVIL technology will never be better than DSLR completely if a quick, accurate focus is depended on it for money shot. But it is an exciting complement.

DIY SDM repair!

Other manufacturers allow their lenses to fail at a rate is no excuse especially when Pentax have an "out" to produce a firmware update as backup to SDM failure. I have a stack of lenses, the only one with problem is the SDM version. What a shame. How many of us have a fast fifty with autofocus? every time i used it, i'm pleased: sharp as tack just a stop down, wonderful focus, small, cheap (way back then), reliable work horse after all these years, that tradition should continue so we can all be proud as pentaxian.

DIY SDM repair!

well...
I did the DIY repair all the way to unstucking motor shaft and back together, didn't appear to help. Thanks to the manual, it is very easy to do, but I wasn't able to unstuck the motor shaft.

i cleaned the SDM contacts. no go either.

out of desperation i tried masking the SDM contacts and the extra pin, but could not fool the camera to work with in-body AF.

manual focus is a pain. I'M NOT BUYING ANY MORE SDM LENSES. I really think lenses are suppose to outlast camera. Lens is the reason i go with Pentax. The lens failure make it a pointless rationale. Especially in the light what should appears to be a viable, easy firmware upgrade or future inclusion on new camera bodies.

i like their glasses line-up.
camera technology is a whole other matter. FWIW, my samsung NX100 critical focus is no-where-near the accuracy of the K20D. I don't know why, perhaps because of phase detection advantage of the K20D.
i like them both, but the NX series with contrast focus have a way to go still. they could have the best lens line up in the world, but wouldn't do much good if their 85mm 1.4 just cannot be focus accurately at 1.4 due to contrast detection problem in critical situation: low light, extremely shallow DOF. in such a case, my experience is that phase detection is superior here.

...i guess i just have to wait and see if the technology will continue to improve. Or maybe the NX100 i got just isn't quite up to snuff.

DIY SDM repair!

If the K10D can continue to operate DA* lens via screw AF, the SDM motor and the screw drive must be clutched from each other somehow.

I think this DIY is great, but may not be a permanent repair, there is a likely chance the problem would just come back.

Have anyone tried disabling all the SDM contacts? it looks like SDM lens has 3 extra contacts over manual screw lens. I wonder if the camera will revert the DA* lens to screw mount AF drive. that could be a permanent solution.

i took the jump for a recent trip, and got a small NX100 kit. The compactness of this kit is outstanding. great for travel. I will say that this NX system is NOT in the same ballpark with traditional SLR for technical works, so my K20 still will be the thing i grab when things get dicey. i do like their lens roadmap and the 30mm f2 was a serious contender, no doubt.

As for the NX100, i think that design is adequate but still need lots of improvement. i'm confident that will come with time. The 3 lens i got are outstanding values, however. I just hope they don't abandon the mount technology and leave these little jewels to obsolecence.
