K-01

I actually think the K-01 is underrated. It got rubbished a bit for its styling (which I'm ok with - at least its not boring) and somewhat slow AF.

Yes the one significant disadvantage is using the screen in sun light. I usually manage by shielding the screen with my other hand or even just shooting blind. But other than that it is relatively compact, I can use all my good quality lenses with it and has very image good quality (in some ways better than my K-5 due to weaker anti aliasing filter). If I'm travelling light then the K-01 + DA40XS (and maybe DA15 + DA70) is my go to kit.

Well I'm envious and please do post some pictures once you get it!

Even though its big and heavy and therefore might not be in my back all of the time, its somehow calling to me. Lets see how long I can resist...

Thanks for posting. While saying "its no good", is definitely putting it too strong, he does point out interesting points in his review (and with a good deal of humour!).

I must admit though, sometimes I like to push the dynamic range a bit (one of the reasons I have a K-1) and so those results would be a bit bothersome.

Why would somebody buy the DFA28-105?

Well I was surprised to find the DFA28-105 was pretty competitive in many ways with most of my FA primes. Yes its relatively slow but in terms of sharpness and CA control, it does the K-1 36 MP sensor justice IMO. I use it a lot more than I thought I would.

In terms of FF versus APS-C, there are plenty of discussions to found on the forums, so I'm not going rehash those. I will say that I still have a K-01 and K-5 as well as the K-1. I use the K-01 (with DA40, DA15, and DA70) when travelling very light but I have not used the K-5 since I got the K-1 and I'm going to sell the K-5. Very happy with the K-1 (and the DFA28-105 for that matter).

Focusing Precision of the new DFA 50

Exactly. It could be done with analogue technology but I highly doubt they have done that. Perhaps its marketing talk for the resolution is so fine that its basically indistinguishable from analogue.

Although I have not used it for a while, I still love the Super Takumar 50 f1.4
Just like the rendering (ok maybe not so much its flare and CA though).

The S.M.C 55 f1.8 is worth a mention too:

Is the K1 a foolish choice if you don't have any modern glass ?

The K-1 is great with old glass IMO.
They are easy to use on the K-1 and personally I like the feel and ergonomics of the K-1 better than the Sony bodies but everyone is different and you experience may differ.

Yes the K-1 will push the old glass (often past their limits) but I'm surprised how good some of the old glass is, and some of the old lenses have an unique character that I like. For example I really like the bokeh (not to mention build!) of the Super Takumar 50 f1.4 (although its flare and CA control leave a bit to be desired!).

Does look like a useful improvement.

Still I think I will stick with my K-1 though.

Need assistance deciding between 2 lenses

If you truly don't care about the wide end and 28mm is more than good enough, then the DFA28-105 is a great lens (and better than my IQ than my DA18-135). Especially if you think you might be interesting in FF some day.

Otherwise I would second the suggestion for the DA 16-85.

+1 to it comes down to auto functionality (with A position) versus build quality.
Personally if the A was in good shape, I would probably go that way as then you can use your cameras auto modes (P, Av, Tv etc) as intended.

K1 Warranty did you need it?

FWIW, I have had my K-1 for 2 years and no problems whatsoever.

Having said that the only photographic related warranty claims I have ever made were with a Sigma 17-70 (fixed no problem) and a Samyang 14 (even though it was badly decentred, stated as being within tolerances - fortunately supplier gave me a credit). But those problems were found pretty much straight away and I suspect most warranty issues are found fairly early on.

I'm assuming the mirror looks ok (its bit hard to see the whole mirror but it looks ok from what I can see)?

Possibly a cracked focus screen (should be visible by looking up at it inside the mirror box.

M 20 f4; prices? Alternatives?

I had the same problems with my K-1. The DFA15-30 is a bit out of my budget and rather big and heavy for what I want (something I can casually carry around in my bag).

I really wanted something like a FA20 but they are fairly rare and are snapped up at (now) relatively high prices. I tried getting a Samyang 14mm but it was badly decentred and being in NZ did not want to persist with shipping multiple copies to get one that was good (and reasonable price).
Over the last couple of years I ended up with the following second hand lenses:
1. Sigma EX 20mm f1.8
2. Pentax K 17mm f4 fisheye
3. Sigma EX 15-30 f3.5-4.5 (very recent purchase)

The Sigma 20 was relatively cheap and is a lot of fun. It doesn't have perfect sharpness (its soft in one corner - which is pretty common for these Sigma lenses) but its still possible to get a sharp image across the frame stopped down and the fast aperture and close minimum focus distance makes it a great lens for creative shots. It is a little bigger than I would like but a lot smaller than the DFA15-30 (and half the weight!).

I also like the K17mm fisheye. Sharpness is pretty good (although not tack sharp), CA a bit high but its a very compact lens and perfect to carry when I'm travelling light.

Sigma 15-30. Have not written a review yet as I'm still testing it. However so far I can say its big (not something I would always carry around) - but I knew that going in. Good build, case, useful focal range but so far I am underwhelmed by its sharpness, contrast and flare control. I'm still need to do some more testing to eliminate all other factors but so far I'm a bit disappointed.

Ahhh its a KS-1, a bit of a difference from a K-1 ;-)

It looks like you have exposure bracketing set on. Go to drive modes and select single frame mode. I think this could explain your problem quite well as by default it will take each of the 3 frames for each button press (and only focus on first shot).

FA 50 F1.4 or A 50 F1.7?

I have S.M.C 55 f1.8, Super Tak 50 f1.4, M50 f1.4, A50 f1.7, A50 f1.4 and FA50 f1.4.

So it seems I quite like fast 50s. My FA 50 is very slightly better than my A50 which is a little better than M50. I still like the bokeh (not to mention size and build!) of the Super Tak the best (but then it has relatively poor flare and CA control).

That said its the FA50 f1.4 that gets the time on my K-1 (and K-5 before it) - largely due to convenience. I probably use my FA50 more at f2 than f1.4 as I like the bokeh better at f2 but your experience may vary.

As others have said the DA 50 f1.8 is also worth a look at too, as its small, cheap and arguably more modern coatings.

LBA, reasons for collecting

+1 for the fun angle of LBA.

I have enjoyed and learnt quite a bit from each of my purchases. I even enjoy my initial quality testing against fences walls etc (well sometimes it can be a little disappointing!). And then some of my best shots are while "trying out" a new lens - as I'm usually not fussy about what I'm shooting and often end up with something more creative.

The problem I have (a common one I sense from this thread!), is getting rid of lenses once I'm no longer using them! I always seem to trick myself by saying things like "I must take that out for some shots as its good at XXXX".
Another problem is I need to be honest with details when I actually do sell and this can affect the value of lenses as I always know exactly what condition the lens is in and its weaknesses!

When I'm wearing my glasses I have the same problem. Fortunately, for me, I use the camera without my glasses by adjusting the viewfinder diopter but that does mean the photo reviews are a little blurry (due to not wearing glasses) and of course there is a limit to what you can adjust to (I'm lucky that I don't need much correction).
When I do use the camera with my glasses on then I just use LV which is not so bad these days.

I have 2 Samyangs myself. Still particularly like my 85 (seems a relatively safe bet QC wise). Given up on the idea of getting a 14mm thats not decentred for now.

Quite right but QC problems do seem to be a feature of many of the Sigma lenses of the period!
