Exports from LR/PS too Dark

What are you seeing on soft proof to the target color space?

Addendum: Be aware too, that even color-managed rendering engines vary as do viewing devices. That is why it is always wise to export to sRGB (lowest common denominator) if publishing to the Web.*

Steve

* Reminds me of a few years ago when a submitted photo to the PS Exclusive Gallery just simply looked gross on the smaller version that judges use for their initial screening, while the original looked fine when viewed with a color-managed browser and crummy with a non-managed browser or image viewer. It turned out that the JPEG was created to the Adobe RGB colorspace, but was badly coerced to sRGB by the forum software and non-managed viewers.

Is there an option to span multiple files for longer videos?

Hmmmm...exFAT did not exist when the K10D was released and unless there was a secret firmware update, that camera was spec'ed to use SD (2GB max)* or SDHC cards (>2GB min -- 32GB max capacity). (Note that the upper limit for partition size for FAT 32 is about 16TB though Windows will only format to 32GB.) The first model to support SDHC was the *ist DS with firmware v2.01. The first model to support SDXC was the K-5 with firmware v1.02.

I use a pair of SDHC 32GB cards on my K-3 and with in-camera format, they report as FAT32. The same is true if formatted with the SD Assoc format utility. I don't have any notion of whether the camera will format SDXC to exFAT. Wikipedia says the SDXC cards may be formatted to FAT32 with the ultimate arbitrar being the reading device. I have been tempted to do a card upgrade and may yet find out.

Steve

* I still have the SD 2GB card that came with my K10D in 2007.

The default is exFAT, but they may be formatted to FAT32. I don't have any SDXC cards to check with, but it would not surprise me if our Pentax cameras were to format them to FAT32.

HDR software basically asserts itself when there is clipping and lets things be when there is none. Your efforts at ETTR accomplished what might be done with a three shot HDR. Where one might see more interesting differences is with a broader bracket. I typically do five shots +/- 2 EV and find that I get better shadow tones.

This is basically what I do minus tonemapping. I have used HDRMerge* and the HDR feature of Lightroom and several permutations of the two tools with good success.

Just going from the chart you posted, but misinterpreted. My bad. I guess I was thrown off a bit by the DNG tags since the image was NEF. In Pentaxland, the RGGB multipliers are stored in the makernotes.

The CZJ Pancolar 80mm f/1.8 is supposed to be quite excellent too. Perhaps your MIJ Planar was channeling its German cousin? Several years ago, I passed on a Pancolar 80mm and have regretted it ever since. :(

Advice on Taking Portraits with K10D
Posted By stevebrot

That, unfortunately, is a bit more of a pain on the K10D because it requires going into debug mode with the attendant risks of doing so. Probably better to not go there until front or back focus to similar degree has been demonstrated for all lenses used on the camera. FWIW, my 2006 production K10D focused as accurately when I sold it in 2014 as when it was new, meaning that it was spot on. In theory, age-related changes should be limited to those involving mirror alignment and/or crud on the PDAF optical path, both of which affect the ability to attain focus consistently, if at all.

Sorry for using terms that might have been misleading. Stopping down will provide greater DOF, but will not improve the AF performance. The use of f-number to indicate AF sensitivity refers to the lens maximum aperture. AF points sensitive to f/5.6 have the same ability to detect out-of-focus with an f/5.6 maximum aperture lens as with a faster lens. There is no penalty for having a faster lens mounted, but also no benefit. Similarly, the f/2.8 AF points found on newer flagship models have better ability to detect out-of-focus than f/5.6 AF points when used with a lens having maximum aperture greater than f/5.6, but with little or no improvement at wider than f/2.8.

Good idea!

OK...I got it. My approach is much simpler, but like yours, it tends to work to my satisfaction and I override as needed. After all, if one is shooting in the blue hour, better that things look a little on cool side, right? One small note...the DNG color matrices are not the WB multipliers per se.* Those are found in the makernotes. An explanation of DNG color matrices requires a deep dive into the DNG specification and I ain't gonna go there!! :D

Steve

* They are the same for all DNGs from a particular camera model.

K-70 vs P&S (Sony RX100 Mk7, GRIII or K-70)
Posted By stevebrot

Based upon how I approach things:
  • If you just need something to bide you over until the K-1 gets back from repair, almost any smart phone will do.

  • If need a pocketable compact for snapshots, almost any smart phone will do.

  • If you did not get on with the rental GRIII, the GRIII will not do.

  • If you need a K-mount compatible backup for your K-1, mirrorless options (possible exception of K-01) will be badly lacking.

  • If price is a consideration and all of the above points make sense, get a K-70.

  • If price is not a consideration and all of the above points make sense, get a KP.

Edit: I seem to have not provided a bullet point for the RX 100...oh, well.

April Fools - Pentax D FA 35mm f1.4 may be down the pipeline??

What is supposed to be funny is when someone is duped by what is supposed to be an obvious falsehood, which such a lens in the pipeline obviously is. I fail to see the humor, but apparently the Phoblographer thought so, they being of the clever sort. Notice how they were able to promote links to Tamron in this humor piece. ;)

Advice on Taking Portraits with K10D
Posted By stevebrot

I shot with a K10D for about seven years and can confidently report that it should require no special technique for portraits over that of any other dSLR. Focus and recompose should work and once focus is locked, it should not change; of course, this assumes AF mode is not AF-C where focus does not lock.

That said...
  • It is important to be sure that best focus is attained (green hexagon lit) before assuming the image is in focus. Fail-safe is AF-S where the shutter will not release until focus is attained.

  • Unlike newer cameras, the K10D has no high sensitivity (f/2.8) AF points. All are f/5.6 and only the center nine are cross-point. With faster lenses such as your FA Limiteds, AF precision may not be adequate for work at f/2.8 and wider.

  • It may be that the AF system is not working properly. Testing with a flat target and fixed distance would be a good start.

  • Manual focus is also an option and might be preferable, though precision may still be poor at f/2.8 and wider.

Of course, this is a joke. While such a lens is definitely on the roadmap, but until the lens has a name it is far from being in the pipeline.

The price paid is not pertinent. Check the lens to see if it is decentered and if so, contact the seller and request an exchange for a non-defective lens and let them hash it out with the Samyang distributor.

That said, are you sure the star streaks are not just motion of the earth? I see it on both right and left in your example (does not look like coma).

CCD vs CMOS Sensors - Which do you prefer for "Colors"?
Posted By stevebrot

Glad you made this comment. My region is rather green much of the time and our forests are particularly mossy and moist in places. When doing forest stream work, getting the look of "green and lush" is often a challenge due to a paucity of warm light where a simple change in white balance is woefully inadequate. What I often have to do is play to those minor pigments with the warm tone sliders and also to build contrast by working the warm and cool tones against each other.
