New KP/K-70 kit variations coming

OK. I can see that different countries (especially Europe) have different kit options. I'll edit the original post to clarify it refers to Japan.

I think that the USA currently has the same restricted options that Japan had. I wonder if the same kits will be available over there too.

That latter combination is attractive. Are they official kits from Ricoh, or a package put together by the retailer? I ask that because certain retailers here in Japan have been offering ďsetsĒ of those cameras with a lens (sometimes even Sigma) but anything official is called a ďkitĒ. What is new here is official kits from Ricoh that should be available everywhere.

Itís an interesting way of extending the shelf life of cameras. Itís like they withhold the kit at first and offer it later as a stimulus. I wonder why they are not offering the KP with the DA20-40, which is what they show in most publicity shots.

Your Best Photo+: RICOH IMAGING has renewed the condition of ďYour best photoĒ.

I entered this about 5 years ago and got selected for a photo I took with my K-01 / FA 100-300. At that time you got 5,000 yen Ricoh store credit (around USD 50) for having a photo selected - a fairly trivial amount. Since the camera was already out, the photo was not used in any promotional materials, but they showed all the winners at CP+ 2013. It's the reason I started going there as a matter of fact. Then the photos were shown in the Shinjuku and Ginza Ricoh Imaging showrooms and some kind of web slideshow.

This is the photo. What makes the photo is the clearly defined silhouette of the hilltops with the trees and villages, and for some reason they don't look well defined after uploading here. It looked a lot better printed at A3 size.

For me I have no interest in commercial photography or making a name for myself. I was just curious to see if my photo would be accepted and chosen, so I was really happy. Also, It gave me a bit of a "way in" to chat to the Ricoh guys at the show, and because I had to sign up to get my store credit, I ended up getting regular communications from Ricoh. So I guess in that sense it made me more engaged with the company.

I never mentioned this contest on the forum before, because I thought it would just annoy people that it was limited to Japan, and result in people saying that Ricoh is too Japan-centric. Now they are making it global, and it seems like people are annoyed anyway. Never mind.

And since the controls allow you to use it with your right hand only, you have your left hand free to hold an umbrella. In that sense it's the only camera that has WR for the user as well as the camera.

I am always surprised by how few fixed lens cameras are designated as WR (as opposed to waterproof). Since the camera is one unit, it would seem easier than for an ILC. My best theory is that the camera makers are worried that if they make a WR compact, users will misinterpret it as waterproof and take into the water, causing warranty issues. So they have just decided not to bother.

In any case, I'm not worried about the GR III, because it has DR. Also, I'm convinced that a lot of the cases of dust on the sensor were cause by people not keeping it in any sort of case. I would always keep such an expensive camera in a case of some kind, even just a simple sleeve.

Ricoh Imaging R02010 (code name)

Well, they did exhibit the GRIII prototype, which is a fairly major release. It looks great and I'm almost certainly going to get one. . . . Unless I'm distracted by this R02010, that is.

My money is on a new Theta model or a K-3 successor. I don't think analyzing the code number will reveal much, because the whole point of having a code number is so that the it's not clear what model it is.

Unless the rationale was that anything released at Photokina would be drowned out by the noise surrounding all those full frame mirrorless systems. It was only Ricoh that have a was not the only company that had a quiet Photokina. Olympus and Sony chose not to launch anything there. Let's face it. Whatever Ricoh released would have been back page news.

Iím pretty sure Theta was developed by another team on the Ricoh side, outside of Ricoh Imaging altogether. The first announcements said that it was developed by Ricoh and marketed by Ricoh Imaging. The Pentax guys at shows always seem to be completely ambivalent about it. There were interviews about it when it came out with people from completely different Ricoh entities.

I logged in last night to see what this is. Itís not a user survey in itself. Itís a system to let you register the serial number of your Pentax/Ricoh gear with Ricoh Imaging. You go through to a page with drop-downs to select a camera or lens, then a field to enter the serial number.

Presumably, I will be in scope to receive some kind of survey if I enter some serial numbers.

Not sure about shipping to Italy, but . . .

RICOH

Their shirts have Ricoh on the front and Pentax on the back. It's like the K-3 in reverse.

2019 is also the Rugby Word Cup, which is going to be held in Japan. Since Ricoh is quite into rugby, I wonder if they'll do any marketing activities to tie in with that.

I like this image from their game against Canon Eagles last week. Ricoh Black Rams won. Sign of the future?

From recollection, it's best not to think about it as a K-3 Mark III. It's going to a bigger evolution that that. But also that current K-3 users would feel at home with it.

I actually posted about it around April or May, but I can't find my own post about it now.

The GR Blog has some articles about the GRIII in English. I think this is where OGL got his images. I may have missed it, but I haven't see the link to the articles themselves yet.

Photokina 2018 Q&A - What would you ask Ricoh?

Closed questions. Questions about future products that we know they can't answer. Feature requests. It's like an interrogation where the interrogator has no power over the person interrogated. I'm not surprised so little of interest comes out.

I wish questions would be asked that allowed the Ricoh people to talk about how they work, how they determine customer needs and so on. Something interesting might come out of that.

About the K-3 replacement, I find the omission of the question interesting in itself. What if they got an more encouraging answer off the record, but they were sworn to secrecy? Remember, Arai-san already said six months ago that they were working on it, and more has been said at events in Japan. This camera is coming soon, I think.

Remember, you don't have a right to know a company's internal plans. My company wouldn't tell, and I bet your company wouldn't either. Things are internal until they are announced.

PSA: K-1 II Upgrade window ending

It was late, and I was being lazy so I used Google, but I can actually read it enough. "RICOHは内緒にしてるみたいですが" (Ricoh wa naishou ni shiteru mitai desu ga) means "It looks like Ricoh is keeping it a secret". But Tanaka likes to portray himself as a bit of a maverick, so he often jokes about revealing things that the Ricoh guys don't want him to say, even when speaking on the Ricoh stage at CP+. I wouldn't take that too seriously.

Since this he has also tweeted that Ricoh won't be extending the upgrade window, presumably for Japan but this was not clear.

Another interesting point about the upgrade is that a Ricoh rep speaking to DC Watch on their booth tour video said that it depends on the country, but in some countries 30% of K-1s sold have been upgraded. That sounds like a lot to me.

I can think of a few.
- Some people found the EV comp toggle on the thumb rest frustrating because it was easy to inadvertently hit. I personally never found that a problem, but I read it in numerous reviews and user comments. They have moved this somewhere else. Not sure how it will work in practice.
- When they moved to APS-C from the smaller sensor GRD IV, they sacrificed a few things - the phase detect AF sensor, sensor shift image stabilization, and the 1cm macro function went to 10cm. They have addressed all of these things in some way.
- People had trouble with dust on the sensor and the new one has the Pentax DRII system to vibrate it off. This is what a lot of people wanted better sealing for.

I'm happy to see a touch screen because I hate dealing with menus through the tiny 8-way buttons. I think being able to swipe through the options will make me more likely to experiment with the deeper settings of the camera. I don't see why people object to touch screens. Do they really feel satisfied with the old routine? - right, right, right, down, down, down, down, OK, left . . .

As for the size, I think smaller is better. I would want to carry this in my pocket, but inside a protective case. This is like the older GRD, so it should be possible to get neoprene case for it and still have it fit in an inside jacket pocket.

Anyway, that's my take on it.

There's video interview with Takahiro Tomohiro Noguchi on DC Watch about the GR III. Noguchi-san is someone very closely associated with the GR. He runs the GR blog site. I saw him interviewed about Ricoh cameras before the Pentax acquisition, so I'm sure he is from the Ricoh side originally.

For the most part it's just what we've heard before. He stresses hat this not a minor change but the whole camera is redesigned from the ground up. The interviewer comments on how the Gas all look the same since 1993. Nogichi-san answers that every time they go through a process of considering other designs, but when they think about the use of the camera, they come back to a similar design. He does say that users are going to feel more of a change when they operate it.

What I found interesting were his comments about demand for the camera. He said that over the years smartphones have taken sales away from compact cameras, but that the GR is stable. It has not been affected at all. He also said that the camera is particularly popular in Asia and China in particular.

Here's the video for anyone who can understand.

If you look at the back view, there seems to be a join just below the hot shoe, as if there is a cut out section that needs to be covered by the hot shoe coming down around the back. That cut out is most likely for an EVF or maybe ďsmartĒ OVF that can relay shooting parameters in my opinion.

On previous versions, that space was taken by a green focus confirmation light. It was quite well placed, because if you used the OVF attachment, you could see that light in you peripheral vision. It looks like they have a different solution now.

Thatís what makes me think we might get an EVF attachment option. They had one before for the GXR, but it never worked with the GR.

Looking at DPRís photos of the prototype, there are some changes to the controls. Also, I think the hot shoe cover looks like it has been designed to expose a connector at the back, which makes me think an EVF accessory may be in the cards.

Ricoh markets two viewfinders for the GR, both of which are superior to the tunnel-like thing that used to be built in to the film GRs. It was only ever there because in the film days that was the only way to frame.

I find that with a fixed focal you soon learn to know what will be in the frame. With snap focus, you can almost shoot blind with a GR.

And lame is entirely subjective. I wasnít even slightly tempted by the K-1 for myself, but I donít go around saying itís lame.

Almost every spec on the GRIII is improved over the GRII. And the spec list is quite specific, so I have no doubt these features are locked in.

Regarding the size, the GR feels noticeably bigger than the GRD models the preceded it. This is back to the GRD dimensions so it will be noticeable. Compactness is not a side issue with the GR; itís a key characteristic.

The extra pixels on the GRII were additional white ones to brighten up the image. They did not increase the overall resolution. So if this has a newer screen, it is most likely superior, and it is a touch screen too.

Another poster claimed that the GR has a non-standard hot shoe. The GR series has always had a standard sized hot shoe. Since the GRII it has supported the Pentax flash system.

Iím probably one of the ď take my moneyĒ people. Fortunately, Iíll be able to try before I buy. In any case, I donít trust any websites to review Ricoh cameras fairly and promptly, so Iíll trust my own judgement.

I really want this. Looks as small as the GRD series. Iím sure this has some tech from Pentax in it, but thereís no way that camera has the Pentax magnetic SR in it. It must be a whole new smaller system. That could come back to Pentax DSLRs. A few months to get my finances in order.

Ricoh insider Kimio Tanaka posted an interesting comment on his twitter today. He says that during the upgrade process more than the board is exchanged.
"こんなこと言うとまたRICOHからクレームがきそうだけど、K-1アップグレードでは基板交換だけでなく、こっそり一部の部品を交換したり補修したりもやってくれます。むろんカメラの徹底チェックや清掃も。"
Through Google: "Although it seems that complaints come from RICOH, in K-1 upgrade, not only board exchange, but also some parts are secretly exchanged and repaired. Of course, thorough checking and cleaning of the camera is also done."
Twitter
In another post he also claimed that there is a particular benefit in upgrading the camera if you have the new D FA 50mm.
"もし、K-1ユーザーでまだアップグレードしてないなら、ゼッタイにやっておいたほうがいいです。D FA50mmF1.4を使ってるなら、なおさらです。RICOHは内緒にしてるみたいですが、ピント精度がぐんっと向上します。"
Through Google: "If you have not upgraded it as a K-1 user, you should do it for a second hand. If you are using D FA 50 mm f / 1.4, this is especially true. It seems that Ricoh is keeping it secret, but focus precision improves a lot."
Twitter
It's something to consider if you're still considering the upgrade.

Photokina, Ricoh has Confirmed

As far as I can see, the people who rejected (i.e. chose not to buy) the K-01 did so for one or more of the following reasons.
- too expensive
- too big
- no viewfinder
- not weathersealed
- unconventional design
- lack of control points
- general sense of unease at that time (not knowing that Ricoh would change direction toward FF)

So you could ďfixĒ some aspect of the K-01 and a few people would be persuaded, but most people would not care. Or you could try to address all the complaints and make something like the K-30/K-50, but mirrorless. They made the K-30.

Personally, I love my K-01. Itís a one-off camera, and has been with me on many travels. I wouldnít wish it were any different, but at the same time I donít think it would necessarily make sense for Ricoh to repeat the exercise and hope for better outcome.
