How To: Convert SDM to ScrewDrive + Video

The failure you're describing seems consistent with the traditional SDM failure. The SDM motor failure happens independently of the screw-drive focus mechanism.

If the lens is under warranty, return it for service. If not, the firmware 'hack' outlined in this thread will* convert the lens to the screw drive.

Note that the screw drive is louder, so if you're shooting where you want the quiet operation of the SDM, then return the lens for repair.

*there's always a chance the firmware fix will fail. Make sure you back up the firmware files, preferably keeping more than one backup in case you need to revert to it. If you're not comfortable with the steps, don't try this. A botched firmware hack or flash can permanently damage the lens.

The conversion was a breeze following the video in the original post. Did both of the lenses in about 15 minutes and they're working fine now with the screw drive. I never really got any use of the 16-50 after I bought it (used). It was working when I got it but seized up later on.

The noise is a little irritating, the SDM was surely a nice feature if taking photos in a quiet environment.

I have an 18-35 kit lens, a FA50 1.4 and the 12-24 on top of my two DA* lenses. I'm somewhat committed to Pentax, with the multiple lens motor failures and now the flash (It both freezes with the camera in M mode and doesn't know where the reflector is so the motor to move it keeps trying to spin even when it's reached the end of the zoom range). I don't know which way to turn.

Super light use on all of it (might be why the focus motors seize).

My coworker brought a Nikon to work the other day. Focus was nearly instant, no hunting. Tracking birds was a breeze.

I remember I selected Pentax when looking at similarly priced Canon cameras back when I tried out the K10D. The K10D was $100 more than the Canon (whatever Rebel was out at the time) and felt so much better in the hand and better built. I sold that and a couple of 'kit' lenses when I got the K5, but the multiple failures of the lenses, flash and focus issues mean that I honestly don't enjoy using it any more.

On my K-5, I have a 16-50 that I bought used that developed SDM failure.
I have a 50-135 that has been sent away twice for the motor repair to an authorized Pentax service center, once under warranty, second time out of pocket. It's failed again.

I converted both of them to screw drive tonight. Thanks for the guide!

Sadly if/when I get to the point I want to upgrade the body, Pentax's terrible focus system and SDM failures mean I won't be buying another Pentax. :(

Oh yeh, my AF540-FGZ is dead too. My experience with Pentax hasn't been great.

SDM gone again, same lens...

Had my 50-135 repaired back in late 2013 for a SDM problem - lens wouldn't wake up and focus.

Now it's happening again. I don't use the lens much so there's very little use on this new motor. Well, I say new, but it's most likely old junk sitting around from before they fixed the design in 2012.

I've emailed Pentax to see what they can do. Doubtful they'll do much given their attitude the first time around. I can't afford a repair right now so it'll most likely sit around until fungus grows inside.

I think they just put reset buttons on the dash now. Now finding a paperclip to unroll and stick in the hole might take ten minutes :)

Sharp looking ride, enjoy!

Great capture. While everyone is trying to take a photo of the plane, you've captured the whole scene brilliantly.
