I have not seen any evidence and I use it myself, but I raised the point so that anyone reading can consider it and investigate for themselves. Given I know nothing of the chemical composition of coatings I wouldn't like someone to potentially destroy their lens because "someone on the internet told them to". :o

I have heard that some of the older lenses repeated use can damage the coatings, but I have yet to see any ill effects. it probably depends on the particular coating on the lense. SMC has been fine so far.

Hi Dave, I still check back here to maintain the listing. Adam doesn't manage this (I would assume he is probably busy enough). I have limited this listing to only Pentax lenses as it would be an infinitely huge list if I included other makes. But if people want to discuss other lenses in the posts then it would be more than welcome.

Added these on to the list. (I really need to figure out how to stop the video preview window as my OP is getting a bit clunky when loading. @adam any pointers??)

what has been your most "disappointing" lens?

I had another variant for a short stint - the 400mm F5.6 APO that lens was quite nice but i sold it due to the 150-500 versatility.

My most disappointing lens would have to be the DA* 16-50. SDM failed recently and I have been reluctant to spend the money on getting it replaced/repaired. I am teetering on buying the K-1 24-70 F2.8 Combo:p

I also felt that it wasn't quite hitting the mark on the sharpness side of things.

I must have had my head burried adam.. I missed them all :O

Really loved reading about the challenges that they were faced with. In my experience as an engineer it is always the combination of seemingly minor problems that get resolved in clever ways that are a true demonstration of the abilities of Pentax's fantastic team of engineers.

Thanks for that post. I am going to be watching that page for each of the new articles they publish over the next 3 weeks :)

What can one learn from a lens serial number?

In the case of the FA Limited's it can also indicate what type of coating was applied. Ie some believe the earlier coatings have more 'Pixie Dust' than the latter - or so the story goes. This thread goes into the details about some of the earlier ones apparently having lead in it and there being an obvious colour difference.

I haven't worked on a SMC 55mm F1.8? (or is it the DA* 55 1.4?) But you could see this other thread I started many years ago https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/114-maintenance-repair-articles/179884-pe...-database.html
It might have a couple of guides that are similar to the way your lens works. You need to be careful when doing this as you can create more problems than you solve very quickly.

As you say you lost infinity, my first thing to check is if the lens is just going beyond infinity focus, you can just learn to focus by screwing the focus barrel round all the way and then just back it off a tiny bit to get it back to infinity. If this was the problem I would avoid opening the lens up.

Why is the K-3 so popular?

Before I say anything else: I shoot with a K5 and don't plan to buy a K-3 as overall for me personally the upgrade is not worth it.

A couple of responses to your comments. But I think the key thing to remember this camera is being designed to suit the needs of a wider audience which given the popularity, it is doing something right.

"better low light AF
more AF points
better AF tracking"
-As I said, the auto focus isn't important to me personally, and from the stats I have read, the auto focus improvements to the K-3 over the K-5 were not substantial in real world use (thought I have never personally tested the two head to head).
I personally have issues with AF in tungsten light front and back focus - Apparently the k3 AF system doesn't have this issue. More (and smaller?) cross type AF points would allow better composition with selective focus point instead of move camera - lock focus - return camera to desired framing.

"significantly more continuous shooting rate"
-I wouldn't call it significant. It's 8.3fps vs 7fps. Unless you are referring to the buffer size.
8.3Vs7 fps to a sport/bird shooter can be significant - not hugely but it can be the difference between getting the moment and missing the moment.

"more powerful processor"
-I haven't personally experienced (nor seen anyone else experience) problems with the K-5 processor. So, the K-3 having one that is technically better doesn't seem to mean much.
One area you will see processor advantage will be when you are shooting JPEG+Raw with filters and noise reduction etc. Obviously not used by everyone.
"slightly larger screen with more pixels"
-Personally, I keep my screen off at all times and never use it. I don't even review my shots. But even for the photographer who uses their screen quite a bit; They are both LCD, neither of them tilt, neither of them are touch screen, the K-3 screen is 0.5cm larger with 1,037k dot resolution vs 920k dot resolution, so again, it seems negligible.
Larger screen is more of a luxury I suppose to make it easier to review images for focus/composition

"more capable video recording"
-I already commented about that in my original post. I do no video at all, 95% of the photographers I know or have ever met do not do any video, and the 5% who does do video has a dedicated camera for video, and it's never been a Pentax. So, the minor improvement in video seems negligible (1080@30fps vs 1080@25fps).
I would say 24p is another key point - this is an industry standard which gives a certain look which some people prefer - comes from the non-digital film industry. And there are a lot of people that work in 24p workflows. Also 25fps to 30fps is quite noticeable as it produces much smoother motion. I am an amateur that likes to take my camera with me on trips up to the Alpine region here in Australia for snowboarding. Shooting fast paced action in video lends itself to slowing down in post for better effect - 720p @60fps would be nice to have.(I have a K-5) and 30fps doesn't give you much (if any head way here)

Thanks Pentor, now added.
Any info helps. Even just seeing the lens in parts helps to give the viewer that little more understanding of how it all goes together.

I think there has become a feeling that after the standard of the PPG went to the wayside the PEG needed to fill the niche of only accepting the absolute crème de la crème of images.
I see many images around the forums that would be candidates for PEG but they rarely get submitted.

Would you have been the one processing the images?
Another factor that might have played into it could have been the post processing workflow. Pentax colours are different to those of the cannon sensors. Additional work on the editing side of things might be involved. I dont know, I am clutching at straws here

I have the 31 & the 77 so hopefully there is some progress on this already. There was some nice light last night and I managed to get out and get a couple of shots. I just haven't had a chance to pull them onto the PC and process them yet.

I personally use CaptureOne Pro as I prefer the results I get from it over Lightroom. This is pretty subjective though.
