Is HD video from a K3 normally this awful?

OP should be shooting at 1080p, not 1080i for full resolution as interlacing cuts the vertical resolution in half. The interlacing renders alternating 540 fields.

You have to do some messing with your jpeg settings. For a scene with that much contrast you might want to use a flatter jpeg profile and try to "color grade" it later to try and save the highlights (use highlight protection too). There's not much you can do about sharpness I'm afraid. 1080p for the K-3 is generous because the codec uses such a poor bit rate that the mushy videos it produces looks more like 720 upscaled to me.

I've used my K-3 as a b camera for work sometimes and the old Canon Rebel we have just takes much better video. I don't know if Pentax or the manufacturer of the image processor is to blame for the poor video encoder, but the quality is not very good. I think Nikon uses the same image processor in their cameras which would explain why they have pretty poor video too. If the processor is to blame, I wish Pentax could offload the video encoding on to a separate chip, but that won't happen because these are the things Pentax skimps on to make such fairly priced cameras. Their message to you and me is too use a dedicated camera system for video (a huge money pit) or use your smart phone (little versatility). I'm not complaining, that's just the way Pentax thinks since they're focused on getting the best still quality.

Sheesh, if expressing the most minutely negative opinion is being "up in arms," I don't know how you react when people are actually negative. Seriously, the Pentax Police that come calling with the "PID" crap is frustrating. Did I say anything about Pentax going out of business, or abandoning products? I said I'm disappointed there doesn't seem to be another APS-C flagship on the horizon.

"Sorry, but K-3lll is sadly not in sight and not real"

I'm sorry, that's anything but cryptic. It's crystal clear. There is no K-3 successor in sight. Not "there isn't one ready for CP+" It isn't in sight. I don't believe Pentax is abandoning their APS-C flagship either, but I can feel disappointment that the crop-flagship is not the focus of Pentax at the moment. Others will be excited about the full-frame developments, and they're lucky to get news on something that interests them. Everyone has different priorities. Someone's priorities not aligning with all butterflies and rainbows all the time is not "PID"

I sure hope they don't move away from the K-7 design, that form factor is ergonomically perfect. That's a huge disappointment that there is no K-3 successor on the horizon, the K-P is completely out of my interest as a replacement for my K-3.

RE: Need adapter that goes from Minolta lens to K mount

I use a glass-less md->pk adapter for my Minolta glass. Your mini wide will be pointless, as you won't be able to focus anywhere near infinity. Even with my 24mm stopped down I don't think I could get infinity in focus. I use the adapter for macro purposes which it's great for (the extra registration +adapter acts like a large built in extension tube).

I'd say go buy a used X-370 and a roll of Portra 400 and shoot it that way!

This could be a slippery slope though, because native md lenses' absolutely gorgeous color rendition is only rivaled by Pentax A and F series lenses, imo!

Shot a wedding in RAW or JPEG?

My vote is for raw, I don't like Pentax's jpeg engine very much. Pentax jpegs generally come out very bland although there is a lot of customization you can do. Plus, if you plan to do any of the typical back-lit portraits, jpeg is not going to do you any favors. Either your subjects are going to be too dark or the background will be super blown out. Also, what if you accidently shoot with the wrong white balance setting? I've accidently changed the color profile to vivid before, which thankfully only affects the thumbnail preview on raw files.

If you want to deliver some quick images, think about in camera raw processing too.

Robert's Camera Black Friday - 10-20% off

Robert's Camera, or has a great promotion going on right now, 10% off all digital bodies, 10% off lenses over 500$, 15% off lenses less than 500$, and 20% off medium format bodies. I have not previously bought from them, but from what I've read online their ratings aren't quite as conservative as KEH, but their prices are good and customer service is excellent. I did pick up a lens for my medium format system and the price was fantastic compared to what I've been watching for.

I don't think the battery grip comes with an extra battery. Mine certainly didn't. I think OP would get more money selling the brand new battery grip second hand rather than trying to get credit from B&H for what is a bundle accessory (The K-3 II with battery grip is only a few dollars more than the body by itself).

Hmm, Why not spend a small amount extra for a brand new K-3 II? 600 is pretty steep for a potentially 3-year-old camera and ninety day warranty. You can get the K-3 II brand new from B&H for 850 with a free battery grip. The battery grip can be sold for eighty bucks and now you have a brand new camera with a real warranty for a small amount extra.

Add an 18-135 used for 250 and a FA 50mm 1.4 used for 150-200 and you have a great kit well under budget.

A 50/1.2 & 8-element Super Takumar 50/1.4 on Shopgoodwill

Making small purchases from shop Goodwill is one thing, but spending multiple hundreds of dollars is another. Goodwill's descriptions are almost always unhelpful, they rarely describe optical or mechanical condition, and images are often terrible. That 1.2, there's only one picture of the front of the lens and it is pretty dark. There might be fungus coating the inner elements of the lens. The aperture blades could be stuck or coated with oil. 350$ is quite a lot of money to take a risk on something sold as is with no return policy. Sure if it's perfect you save a hundred and fifty bucks, but that's quite a risk to save so little.

Some Porst 50 1.2 Questions

If it has a k mount, your Pentax camera should be able to stop it down (unless the lens is damaged). The camera stops down the lens with a physical lever, not electronically. Thus, green button metering will work. Aperture priority will not work because your K-S2 does not have the mechanical linkage that Pentax film cameras had which measures how much the aperture ring is turned to compensate the light meter, so your camera will only shoot wide open in av.

As far as calculating depth of field, I personally use the dop scale on the lens itself to estimate and use the dop preview to visualize it if I need to, although that's not exact if that's what you're after. It should give you a pretty good idea of the distance though.

DFA*50 1.4 coming

The 50 is of no particular interest to me, my fa 50 is all that I'll ever really need (unless the repackage it with a DC or SDM motor with weather-sealing). I do have skin in the game because my future down the road of my photography will inevitably lead me to a nice full-frame wide-angle lens and full frame camera for landscape and astrophotography, as I love my Samyang 16mm lens. Pentax makes the best cameras for astro landscapes and I'll likely pick up a K-1 on a firesale several years from now whenever the K-whatever FF is out, and the success of the 50 will likely influence whether or not a good wide-aperture 24 surfaces in the future. I do have hopes that Pentax finds some success with big, corrected lenses, because the 31 ltd seems to be more of a lifestyle and portrait lens, not something often recommended for astro landscapes (not saying it can't be done).

Ha, I was told before that if you ask a Japanese clerk if they have something in stock that you need, they would never tell you "no", they'll say "That might be difficult" or something similar to that. It's a polite way of telling you no without telling you no.

My experience with Photoshop, anything above 10 on the quality slider just seems to increase file size quite a bit with only a marginal quality increase.

My recommendation is to always save png files. They are compatible on any website, are lossless, and the compression is super efficient. In fact, I've had pngs come out with a smaller file size compared to lossy jpgs in some situations (images with low detail generally). You should never run into compatibility issues with png. Also, I'd recommend WordPress over Wix, the user experience if Wix is pretty awful.

You might want to try shooting Ektar before you commit to slide film, as slide film might be crazy expensive to develop. At least it's that way for me, no one develops slide film anywhere close, so I have to ship it out. I've seen Ektar described as the color negative slide film. So it might give you an idea of what it's like to shoot super saturated slide film with a narrow dynamic range.

Kodak Portra is by far my favorite film, and 400 is definitely the best balance of the qualities of the Portra range. If you want something cheap to get you started, there's always Kodak Gold 200.

This guy makes some nice videos talking about different film types, he's worth checking out.

Best Buy has allll the cameras (except Pentax)

Ha, I had a friend ask if Pentax was some sort of generic brand. I had another (older) say he didn't know Pentax ever made any digital cameras. It really wasn't that long ago that Pentax had a massive presence in the US. It seems like their marketshare plummeted in the late eighties-mid nineties and never recovered. I see quite a few P series cameras with a 35-80s attached on craigslist and camera stores, and even less of the MZ series. In terms of digital cameras, I'll find the odd *ist D with kit lens, but never anything later. Compared to the slim offerings of autofocus cameras, Super Programs, Me Supers, Spotmatics, K1000s, are so prevalent, you can't get away from them. So no one younger than thirty has any awareness of the brand.

My Best Buy has a growing Sony section, along with modest Canon and Nikon sections. It even has a whole shelf dedicated to Keymissions. I think Pentax would have a better bet marketing through smaller camera retailers rather than big-box stores. Our local camera shop carries every single camera brand EXCEPT Pentax. It's miserable. They used to carry only Nikon, Canon, and Leica but have added Olympus, Panasonic, Sony, and Fuji and market those guys pretty hard. It works too, I've been seeing a whole lot more Fujis, Sonys, and Olys around the necks of 20-30 somethings locally in the past few years.

The files will usually be called something like "Photoshop Temp152258354612" and have no file type. If you run disk cleanup it should clear out your Temp directory.

If it's not the system page file, PhotoShop stores quite large temp files in your temp directory. I've definitely cleaned upwards for 20 gigs of PhotoShop temp files out of my temp folder before.

Uhm, no, that's technically not true at all. "The art or practice of taking and processing photographs." Is the definition the Oxford Dictionary gives to photography. You'll notice it doesn't mention anything about controlling shutter speed or aperture manually. I've seen people take better pictures with their smartphone than many gear heads who could rattle off a great deal of technical details about their cameras. Does that mean one couldn't become a better photographer by knowing and controlling all the aspects of the exposure triangle? Of course not. You'll notice more smart phones are giving you manual control to exposure as well as RAW developing options. My 30$ Microsoft phone comes with manual controls for exposure out of the box. Photography doesn't require the pretensions you proclaim because photography is just about creating images. Controlling all of the settings you want won't create a good image if you don't know anything about light, color, and composition anyway, all of which don't particularly require any of the exposure controls to get right.

Try looking around for a Promaster branded camera, they are essentially a modern K1000, and since they were produced so recently and marketed to students they likely will be in perfect working order with good seals. They're mechanical so don't require batteries as well. They're often sold for peanuts if you keep a look out.

Definitely not just jpeg processing. Jpeg processing is included, bit PRIME is the CPU of the camera. It does all signal, autofocus, exposure, etc processing. This is why you see high end cameras such as the D500 have a separate processor that just does autofocus computations.
