Macro Help with magnification calculation
Posted By Nass

It would indeed make a difference to the calculation but not one that I have a formula for.

Maybe it's something it's something to add during the winter month downtime to http://extreme-macro.co.uk/calculators/

But I completely agree, a shot of a ruler is by far the best way to measure (the equations we use are approximations because of thin lens assumptions)

Yep, does direct the light but you have to say it's pretty harsh without diffuser sheet in front! Imagine that on a shiny bug

Very nice. The thing about the popup flash is that it's usually so slow to recharge, otherwise I'd use it a lot more

Macro I Need Some Stacking Help

Like Doundounba said, smears like that happen because of alignment discrepancies at the extremes of the image plane on the sensor. I almost always get them regardless of which of my systems I use. Best is just to crop it out.

I've had one very positive opinion from someone who bought it, but not a detail review of any sort. By the sounds of things it sounds as if it's good though :)

Macro My First Stacks!

Bravo! It's so exciting when you get your first successful stacks through, well done :). On top of that you've chosen one of the hardest things to get right, the needle. If anything is going to show up un-diffused lighting and a wide tonal range, shooting the highly reflective metal of the lighting will do it :). I remember when I was at a similar stage to you, the next thing I spent a looooong long time at was diffusion, experimenting with diffusers, understanding it, making lots of them. Might be worth spending some time at?

Canīt reach focus

Are you using the same m42 adapter on the 500 as you use on the 200 or 400 when they reach infinity? It does matter, because some of the M42 adapters add a little bit of extra distance between lens and camera, and the effect of that is the loss of the ability to reach infinity focus. It's a bit like using extension tubes but the reverse - us macro types use them to be able to focus closer than the lens would do on its own, but the corrollory of this is that you also use infinity focus.

Flash Advice for Macro Studio

One thing, doublecheck the flash you buy that it's got a decent range of manual flash settings. Some will go 1/1 - 1/128 in 1/3 stop settings, but others just allow 1/1 and 1/16. The former obviously gives you more choices.

Beyond that, member automorphism basically hit it on the head. Cables are a pain (but not the end of the world) and you don't need HSS. Fwiw I have found rear-sync useful myself, to prevent ghosting on combines light sources, but that's using a field monitor as background and I don't think too many people do that.

Good luck!

Hi Bob,

It does look like a terrific idea indeed, but I don't have one myself. I know of several other competent people trying it out, so let me get back to you with the consensus once there is one! Not sure if I like that it is tied into Helicon though, Zerene is the higher quality package.
