My Canon to Pentax experience: Why I love Pentax, but might still leave.

I bought the K5 because it was the best value for dollar at the time. I wore out a K3 shooting outdoors. The K1 for value is ridiculously good, and I shoot wildlife.

And I hear all the complaints from friends who have other manufacturers. We get shots and we miss some.

In four years I will wager there will be a very nice Pentax body to purchase. You sound like the type of customer Ricoh is happy to have. You will buy the nice lenses they bring out, and in a few years another body.

Owners of Pentax 55-300 and 150-450 - Are you still glad you bought the 150-450?

I bought the 150-450 last fall and have been impressed. I have an older version of the 55-300 that I bought with the K5 and I haven't used it in a long while. I also have the DA*300, as well as the Sigma 500 f4.5.

I wanted something more flexible and lighter than the Sigma. The focus distance is good enough for shooting insects and reptiles. It is sharp and nice contrast. It needs lots of light though, but that is the constant bane of long shooting. I'm finding it on my K1 almost all the time and when there is decent light I can get quite nice shots.

I've seen otters maybe 8 times in the last 5 years. Maybe 3 times the light and distance was reasonable. I have photos but not good ones in the sense that they are interesting or with character, whatever that means. To get a good one will be one very short moment when the light catches they eyes or doing something interesting. They don't pose. To get that moment will result from many shots taken. They are unpredictable, you cannot see the details that will be clear in the photo.

The skill is working with the buffer and refresh rate to capture the moment as it arises.

Getting a shot of an otter is not an every day occurrence. Getting a great shot is very rare. When the opportunity arises you take lots of shots.

Please. Fast frame rates are useful for capturing a moment. I switch to crop mode on my K1 if I want a faster frame rate. But to get those 10 fps rates on a full frame costs $5k for a body. I'm not going to buy that, it doesn't make sense, as normhead says, the difference being $5k vs $15k for equipment.

I have two friends who shoot Nikon and Canon, the D500 and the Canon crop body. They get shots I miss with a faster frame rate. But I get shots they miss because of better noise control with the K1.

If the K1-II gets a stop in shutter speed through better noise control, that is a major upgrade. Right now I can get a stop by buying a faster long lens, hauling around a flash setup.

How much is a stop of shutter speed worth to you?

Wheatfield, you are displaying your ignorance of wildlife shooting technique.

Ricoh has had an amazing ability to give me what I want. The K1 opened up shooting opportunities for me with the low light abilities. I've had it for close to a year and a half, bought lenses for it.

I likely won't buy a body this year, but my wandering eye will be stayed with a firmware update that improves AF and extends the wifi app so I can shoot in modes where I don't want to touch the camera. I'll buy a lens this year as well.

The manufacturing refresh will let them drop the price. Imagine the K1-ii at $1250. At that price I'll buy a second one.

The D850 price is too high, even strained through Ricoh. The only thing that tempts me is the D500, but I'm not going to replace all my lenses and accessories. Next year an apsc equivalent will be available, and I'll have the choice between that or a second K1.

They know their market and I am it.

A manufacturing refresh. That usually means an almost total reworking of the internals to lower costs of production, drop the chip count, etc. These things are made up of parts manufactured by a bunch of other people, and after 2-3 years those products have all changed as well for the same reason.

The D850 is an amazing body but too expensive. Likely something like that was considered, but a $3-4K body was decided against.

The K1 stacks up extremely well against it's similar priced competition who all have lower resolution or a different design entirely. $1700 is still a very expensive camera body.

As for resources, software rewrites are extremely resource intensive.

I'm seeing people buying the D500.

Is an upgrade that improves image quality insignificant now to photographers?

What software? There were something like this a year or more ago where the graduations in color were not handled property by software which didn't have enough color depth to deal with it. 16 bit vs 32 bit iirc.

Remember too that a softer image will make the harsh distortions look better. I find that this lens and the DA*300 can get very harsh and choppy images in some situations.

Godox Witstro 600M triggering

I forget precisely the shutter speed. The bodies and flashes were triggered by a raspberry pi output board, so I opened the shutter, triggered the flash, close the shutter. With a few ms in between to make it work.

I want to make it simple. And be able to illuminate further out.

The speedlights were set to 1/8 power and all triggered at the same time.

---------- Post added 02-08-18 at 02:59 PM ----------

Thanks for this. I couldn't find any documentation on what light I would have at those speeds.

I see the Einstein will give me 1/6000 approx at 1/4 power.

I talked to someone at The Camera Store in Calgary, and she is going to check with the Godox rep and try to get some more precise specs. I'll share what I get.

Exactly. I need something that can be used outside, battery powered. With lots of light, at a very short duration, around 1/6000 seconds. I think the Godox Witstro will give me about 6-8 meters to work with at these speeds. The Einstein would work as well. I can get the GODOX one for $850 CAN. The Einstein with battery pack would be close.

I got the shots by opening the shutter, 1/20 or so, then triggering the flash.

This is what I'm trying to get.

Was it hot that day? At the distances you were shooting, if it is a hot day, everything will be distorted.

Were you in a vehicle, air conditioned, hot outside? More distortion.

Were you on a tripod? Try the electronic shutter.

It looks to me like movement blur or heat distortion

I'm looking at this monolight for freezing movement, It says it comes with the Godox Wireless X system. Does the Cactus work with this? What would I need to trigger the flash from my K1? I see it slaves optically, S1 or S2. I suppose the XSync port as well.

Thanks

Do a google search for strap wrench. You would need two of them. They will cinch and grip. First put a few drops of penetrating oil, and leave it for an hour or so.

Hah. I told a friend that after having the K1 for more than a year I am finally mastering it.

The K1 is a very capable body. It could be a manufacturing refresh with some tweaks here and there. Faster card write, bit better af, some movie improvements, a different sensor, some changes in the viewfinder.

So do hummingbirds, and yet that is how the wing movement is captured. You don't need to have the shutter open for long, only long enough so you can fire your flash while it is open. Set up the exposure so that it is almost dark. Your flash would be at 1/8th power or so, that gives you 1/6000 approx. You probably could go to 1/4 power which is double that. If you have the capacity to time things well, you can open your shutter, hold for the time it takes for the body to stabilize, fire your flash, then end exposure.

Under expose 3 or 4 stops and illuminate your subject.

1/10 f11 70mm. 1/8 with multiple flashes.

150-450 wide open, iso 5000 and 6400. This body never ceases to amaze me. These would have been throwaways with the K3.

So I have to pay close to $5k to get an EVF that would be tolerable for action photography, or I can pay $1800 and get an OVF that works very well.

The promise of electronics is that it is cheaper. That doesn't seem to be the case.
