90mm 2.8 D FA 645 Macro Focus Hunting Issue

I dont think I've ever taken a shot with 90mm at narrower than f5.6. I generally handhold for all my portraits and SR definitely helps. I love the creamy bokeh from the 90mm. 150mm is also very nice, but 75mm is not as nice IMO. I cannot speak to results at f11, but at wide apertures, 90mm is razor sharp.

645 28-45 on film

Well, i've got a film body and the lens. I've never used the combo because i only use 645N for portraits. But here's what it looks like.

People who never used the lens have no idea how awesome 28-45mm is. Along with 90mm SR, i'd rate this two of the very best lenses in any system.

At 28mm, there is tiny bit of corner darkening. But as someone said, 645n and 645n II have 90% viewfinder coverage. But this is NOT BAD at all!! If you just zoom a little bit, by 30mm it's completely gone.

Thanks. That's pretty much my assessment when comparing FA35 and A35. I wonder how much real improvement is there from FA to DFA...

A35 vs FA35 vs 33-55

I had the FA 35. It was good, but not as good as 28-45. In fact, it didn't even catch up at F5.6. 28-45 is super sharp wide open, FA35 needs about F8 to get there.

I sold FA35, eventually got a used A 35 at a good price. I think it's a little better than FA 35 on my copy. But i've not done direct comparisons. The thing is, it's much more compact!

New 28-45 lens or 645Z?

28-45mm is one of the best wide angle ever created for any system. The perspective it gives is just mind blowing. For landscapes, how can you live without it? You can buy all the Z's in the world and it will not give you the perspective you want.

90mm 2.8 D FA 645 Macro Focus Hunting Issue

I've used my 90 for a year and very satisfied with it. No hunting issue. It's the best optic I've ever used, period.

You need to understand that this is a macro lens. All macro lens has greater focus throw. For example, a Canon 100mm 2.8 L Macro will not focus as fast as a 100mm f2 USM, even it's an L lens.

645d for enthusiast?

Well said Gordon.

I have 645D for the same reason. I can say that if you desire AF speed, low light High ISO ability, low weight, 645D is not the camera. You'd be much better off with 645Z, or current full frame available in the market.

Shooting with 645D is just different than full frame DSLR. It slows you down and every turn of focus, every peak in the viewfinder is a real enjoyment. Nikon D810 can't even compare.

At low ISO's for portrait and landscape, coupled with some FA primes, it is an amazing machine. I use my 645D with 55, 75, 90, 150, and 300 FA primes and they're amazing. Even the old FA primes (without SDM/DC motor), they're fast and quiet. FA150 specially deserves the mention because of its price point.

Item Location
Dallas, TX (United States)

Item Description
The legendary Bokina as many call it. Really excellent bokeh! Very sharp even wide open! As a macro it will do 2:1 without the extender, and 1:1 with extender. Very low distortion.

Really exceptional condition! Include the hard to find 1:1 adapter. Boxed and comes with original caps, hood, leather cases and manual. Really hard to find one in this condition. Aperture and glass are both super clean. Lens hood has some minor marks and paper box shows wear. The leather case is in great shape.

Item for Sale
Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 - Sharp! (Mint)

Asking Price
260.00 USD

Item Location
Dallas, TX (United States)

Item Description
I bought this lens only a few months ago for use with my K5iis. I bought brand new for about $300. It is essentially almost new in box! I do not want to deal with SDM failures and this is a reasonable choice with HSM focusing. However there is no weather sealing. This is the latest HSM version.

It is a very sharp lens! You'll not regret it. Focuses fast and very quiet! I'm selling to fund another purchase for my other systems.

I will include a free lens cleaning kit and a new Tiffen 77mm UV filter.

Telephoto Lens Advice Please!

Few things to consider-
For air shows, it's usually day light and you don't really need a really fast aperture.
100-300 is a nice option, however it lacks optical stabilization in lens, so you still get shaky image in viewfinder. Also 300mm is a bit short at times.
170-500mm has in lens stabilization, but very heavy and large. Optically not as good as 120-400mm. You also lose 120-170mm range.
120-400mm has in lens stabilization as well, not as large and heavy as 170-500, and sharper than 170-500. Also focuses slightly faster due to faster aperture.

the 400-500mm range is negligibal in my opinion. Try it and you'll see.

Visual way to track/manage my personal lens collection?

LOL. Finally there is a thread about this!

I use 30+ lenses across 5 systems. Being a photographer we're a visual bunch. I had to get a chart to illustrate what I collect or what I will be collecting.

I've experimented with vertical and horizontal approach over the years and found vertical approach worked better because some lenses have long names :)

Like some other folks I have included not only focal length, but aperture, WR and other attributes. I've also used various colors to represent different lens systems :)

here's a cropped (about 1:3) image showing the weird bokeh. I think this was about f2. Focus is on the light switch.

I bought this lens, and returned it...

Two reasons -
The lens has a serious design flaw IMO. I use an adapter to use on full frame Sony A7. The entire lens barrel is essentially a focus ring. It's easy to focus but impossible to mount/unmount from the adapter - no where to grip. If you leave the adapter on the entire time that's fine, but I only have one adapter for multiple lenses.
The bokeh is nice most of the time, but sometimes it produces a weird white dot in the center of the out of focus highlight area. Very unusual. Usually the outer ring glows but this is the opposite.

By the way, this lens seems to be designed to be shot around f4-f8. Even at f5.6, the out of focus area is very dreamy (on Full Frame). Unlike other soft focus lens i've used.

I opted or Sigma 17-50/2.8 for $300 and had never looked back. The risk of SDM failure and resale value scare me. They need to make a DC version of this lens!

Has anyone tried using their 645 lens on full frame Sony e mount? What adapter do you use?

I've been looking all over, and found this. So i bought it and tried it, but while the lenses can be mounted onto the adapter, but the camera cannot be mounted. Its like it's not made for E mount. I don't want to force it because it seems it would damage the mount. So I returned it.

Amazon.com : Fotodiox Pro Lens Mount Adapter, Pentax 645 (P645) Mount Lenses to Sony E-Mount Mirrorless Camera Adapter - for Sony NEX & E-mount Camera Bodies (APS-C & Full Frame such as NEX-5, NEX-7 & a7) : Camera & Photo

I have FA150 and FA 300 and eager to see how they fare on the A7 II with in body stabilization. Especially for 150 because it's so compact.

Optically I give it 9.9/10, but it was too heavy so I sold it, replaced it with Sigma 17-50/2.8, optically almost as good, but definitely slower. I love the internal zoom though.

I've owned all three, though not at same time. I only have the Sigma 17-50/2.8 now. Got it just a few months ago for $310 brand new! It is much better than the others IMO. The 17-70 is generally fine but at 50mm, 1 F stop makes a difference is rendering. 17-50 focuses very accurately and I regret i should have bought it earlier!

I went with 300mm f4 because it has tripod collar and razor sharp at f5.6. The thin DOF look at f4 is also nice at times. It really doesn't weigh that much more than 300/4 for Canon/Nikon full frame. If you're thinking about 300/5.6, you might want to look at 150-300/5.6. Both do not have tripod collar, but i think IQ may be similar.
