Bought one a couple of months ago in the for sale section for my wife for her birthday. I think I paid $180.00 (US) plus shipping.

Monday, she stumbled in the garden, broke her foot, and landed on the lens. She was so thrilled with it on her K-1 and is pretty distraught over destroying it.

If you've got one that you don't use in that price range, I'd be happy to buy it. And she'd be thrilled to have it replaced.

Thanks tons.

Steve, thanks for taking the time to think that all through - and articulate it so clearly. I understand, conceptually, what needs to be done.

I'm kind of jammed up today, but I'll mess with it this evening or early tomorrow and report results.

-----------

I think I lied. Fiddled more with the 100mm one lens on the "good" body (30k shutter count) and got the same results. Posted a couple of more images to the same zenfolio link above.

Because it's happening with every lens I've had on the thing, and on four bodies, I hardly know what to think.

Try other lenses? All my lenses?

I'm wondering if I've set it to mis-meter somehow. It also doesn't happen every burst. Ugh ugh ugh. Confuseder.

By that do you mean wide open, Steve? At 2.8? (I suspect so).

---------- Post added 04-23-19 at 06:34 PM ----------

Small, quick test. About 200 shots each camera.

Tried the 100mm 2.8 WR macro on a "bad" body (the one with ~16K) and got blowout at 2.8 and 11.
Moved the lens to the one "good" K-3 and got consistent light at 2.8 and 11.

Both on H igh burst, TAV mode. Spot focus, spot metering.

Let's see if I can answer all of the questions:

Happens on different lenses on all three bodies. Doesn't appear to play favorites that way with lenses or combinations.

Exposure mode = AV and TAV that I've noticed so far. Can try others.

In-camera mode from two in a sequence: https://emmisoure.zenfolio.com/p104379158 (I paid for zenfolio but have yet to build anything there - ugh!) - think I've set it to be downloadable (original .jpgs)

Often occurs when panning or tracking birds/insects. Sometimes, though, when I think I'm holding still, too. Burst shots of flowers, birds, etc.

Could be a sticky blade problem. But unlikely. I've swapped out lenses among bodies. And it seems to be a body rather than a lens problem. I'll explore that further, though. (to MetteHHH)

Re 4x Kx bodies - I hate swapping lenses. And my wife and I both shoot. So I try to collect the current body that I'm shooting. And then refrain from swapping lenses so much. Mostly I shoot bees, birds, flowers, and gardens. Nothing too special about any of that.

Shutter count of one is 100k+. The other two are...I think...~20K or so. (16K on the posted .jpg. - the other is roughly similar)

I'm 99pct sure it's not an issue with lenses. I've used so many (some new) among the cameras and it does seem body specific. In fact, after the bees on the muscari, I put a lens that's had blown-out results onto the "good" body and got consistently-lit shots. I can fiddle further there.

Thanks for the replies so far. Let me know if I've missed an answer or have not been clear.

I've looked around and cannot find a thread on the subject. Forgive me if this has been discussed.

On three of our four K-3s, when we shoot in continuous mode, the first shot will be properly exposed and then the subsequent shots will be incredibly overexposed (same settings shown in the EXIF). All have 1.40 version of the firmware installed and I cannot find any setting differences that would cause this.

Seems to be a common problem (or repeated user error across three bodies).

Does anyone have experience with correcting this problem? Or guesses?

Thanks!

You all are confirming what we all already know: it's not the camera.

Really excellent work in here. A pleasure to look at what people have posted.

You all could make good art with a Brownie with a light leak ;)

(and that's not to take a THING away from the K-50...love mine and wasn't in the same universe as the intent of this post)

Ran all night and drained the battery. No update occurred (1.0 still). This is one of the early ones that needs to be sent in for service. I suspect that if they'll still take it in, they'll update the firmware when they fix it.

How long do I wait? What do I do? Is it bricked?

Just received a new-to-me K-50 in the mail today. Couple of quick and dirty test shots with the 50-200mm kit lens at 200mm and wide open.

I think I'm going to be pleased...

Back focus on a K-x body...

Mario,

My question was what do the four variables in the first menu control? (AF Area Test)

This is exceptionally difficult. I can move the focus from back to front, but cannot settle on a sweet spot between. The results are incredibly inconsistent even when I hold the variables steady (tripod, light, distance, aperture, etc.). Five shots on exactly the same settings (taking it out of focus manually between) produce five different results.

Makes me wonder if I'm adjusting the wrong thing - or if there's something wrong with the autofocus itself.

Still having fits. Just cannot get it dialed in properly.

In debug mode, my options are:

AF Area Test (0-3)
AF Area Number (0-10)

Then the FocusCorr bar

I've been messing with the FocusCorr bar (sliding scale - moving it to the right to compensate for back focus...stuck at 170um for best results, but not great) - and that at AF area 0.

I assume AF Area Number is for the 11 AF sensors.

But I have no idea what the 0-3 (4 possiblities) of AF Area Test are. And I've only been working with AF Area Test 0.

There's an article here on the K10D that might have info in it.

But I'm stuck on the K-x.

Thanks again, Maw.

I really have to wonder if everyone gets such inconsistent results. Still fiddling with it. But it's just not the same every time. Within just a few hairs, but not exactly spot on with each shot. And I think my variables are pretty consistent.

Thanks for the link and further advice. I think I've *almost* got it dialed in. But I'm going to try with my 50mm 1.8 tonight and sharpen the settings as you recommend.

Miles and miles better now than before, though. Straight from the camera...dog walk just got off the mountain. Almost passable.

Thanks for the help, Maw. I ended up printing out a sheet linked elsewhere - served better than the one I'd made myself. Biggest question was how to get it into debug mode, but that thread I linked had the info in it. I had read too hastily.

It's still a little squirley on being dialed in 100 percent. Even on a tripod, each shot (100mm pentax 2.8 macro lens @ 2.8) is just slightly different when I refocus. Only minimally, but there's 1/2 line or so variation. I suspect that has to be normal, though. It's performing way better than it did.

Thanks again.

I have 4 K-x bodies that, until yesterday, have been my only cameras (different lens on each to minimize lens switching). One of them focuses too far back and I would like to fix that.

I found this thread that discussed it:
K-x focus adjustment

But it's such an old thread (and such an old model) that the links are outdated.

Does anyone have links to the download still?

And any other advice I would really appreciate. The cameras themselves are pretty bulletproof (some have more than100k clicks on them)...and I intend to keep using them.

Thanks in advance.

Charging battery in other country

One of the reasons that I have stuck with Pentax is the brand's ability to eat batteries from the 7-11...or a mud hut in Ethiopia.

Irrespective of how many batteries and chargers and precautions I take with me, I'll never travel without the ability to use non-proprietary batteries. Ever. Nor will I buy a camera for which that's not an option.

Landscape lens - seeking advice

I lost my mind...

I bought a 35mm limited macro (double duty, right?) and:
Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro
Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM
from another site member.

I'm still going to keep my eye out, though, for a 18-135 WR.

Thanks for all of the advice here. I'm thinking that having the 3 options available, I'll be prepared for just about whatever and might actually settle into some good shots. I'm really stoked to expand my skillset.

Gonna pull the trigger on this today, then.

Thanks for the replies. I've got the Tamron 90 macro and I think this will pair with it well (and be useful for wider shots, too).

This really isn't a question about a specific lens...but rather the cycles of sales. I'm ignorant.

Thinking of getting a 35mm macro ltd. Pull the trigger now from B&H or wait for a sale?

I don't have any experience with gear price cycling throughout the year (apart from Black Friday deals).
