Pentax K5 - faster shutterspeeds than the sync speed of 1/180 for dog portraits

Tuutje, it is very possible that the person who took those images with flash at 1/640 shutter speed was using a camera with a leaf-shutter lens installed. A medium format camera with a leaf-shutter will sync at any shutter speed the lens is set for.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I recently acquired an old Honeywell Pentax Bellows Unit off flea-bay for under $15.00 and wanted to give it a test so I put a K-adapter on it and mounted my SMC Takumar 50mm f1.4 M42 lens on the front and headed to the backyard with my K5iis. Exposure data: Manual exposure at 1/160th, f11 (F 22 actual), Bellows extended to 1.6:1 mark, Sunpak 522 on manual set to 1/16th power. I handheld the camera and moved the camera closer and further away to focus (a bit tricky since the viewfinder was so dark, but live view helps). Razor thin depth-of-field even at this f-stop.

Great job by all of the artists. I must agree that this is one of the more difficult contests to pick a favorite. I must say that the depth-of-field in some of these really does make me feel like some "stacking" must have been applied. I can never get that kind of front to back sharpness in my non-stacked MACRO work.

Corel itself posted a similar offer a few months ago. It popped-up when you exited Paintshop Pro Photo X8. I clicked the link, it took me to the Cleverbridge site where I downloaded X-9, and three other softwares including Facefilter portrait re-touching software. I paid $14.99 back then also. Everything was legit.

This appears to be a M42 screw-mount Pentax Auto Bellows ll that has a M42 conversion ring mounted to a small Pentax extension tube so that it will accommodate the K-mount bodies. The lens appears to be a M42 screw-mount, fixed-focus, 100mm bellows lens.

Welcome to the club, mine is always with me in my car. I couple it with Pentax F 28-80 and a Pentax F 70-210 and love the results. I have also ventured to use it with a SMC 300 F4 and a Tokina 75-300 on occasion. My most used combo is with the Pentax F 50mm f1.7 though.

Not too many real deals out there currently. I am so glad I had the cash available last year and snapped up my 17mm-70mm F4 for under $300.00 at B&H and my 300mm F4 for $796.00 at Adorama.

SMC DA* 300mm f4 focusing question

Yeah,

I have been searching for a lens to produce great quality images at 300mm or more and have gone through a SMC-F 100mm-300mm, a SMC K-series 300mm f4, a Tokina 75mm-300mm, and the DA 55mm-300mm in my search. Looking forward to using this DA* 300mm. Some produce decent results and others just couldn't quite get sharp enough at the long end. Now that I have this I will probably be selling off the majority of these others.

SMC DA* 300mm f4 focusing question

Thanks everyone,

I have a DA 55mm-300mm that has quick shift on it but it still stops at both ends of the scale so I wanted to ask the authority, Pentax Forum Members.

I haven't had a chance to actual take it out for a test shooting yet and was just testing it prior to going out with it tomorrow and noticed this.

Looking forward to the results.

Thanks again,

Ray

SMC DA* 300mm f4 focusing question

Hello all,

I recently purchased a copy of the DA* 300mm F4. When I mounted it to the camera I immediately noticed that the focus ring rotates freely all the way around in both directions. There is a difference in feel when you are in the range of where the scale shows through the window, but it doesn't stop at either end of the scale. Is this the way it works or is my copy faulty?

Thanks,

Ray

Pentax M f/4 100 mm Macro lens

As Just1MoreDave responded, you must go into the custom settings menu and allow the use of the aperture ring first to have the camera stop down the lens. If this isn't done then no lens with an aperture ring will work at anything but wide-open. Secondly, you can use the AV mode if you press the green button prior to depressing the shutter release. The lens will stop down and the built-in light meter will measure the light going through the stopped down lens. Personally, I have found that when using macro lenses I get my best results when using flash to supplement the light. It does 2 things, first it adds more light, and second it stops camera shake or subject movement from spoiling my images. If you decide to use flash, then set your camera to M (manual) and set the shutter speed to 1/160th of a second and your aperture at F11 (going to F16 or F22 can cause diffraction and soften your images) and shoot away. I have the same set-up and have achieved very good results.

My 2 cents worth,

Ray

Handheld Meter Purchase?

I would highly recommend a hand held unit like the Gossen Lunastar F/F2 unit (mine came with a 3 degree spot attachment also). It can be used as an incident or reflective meter. It has a digital display and reads in 1/10th stop increments so you can be dead nuts accurate. The display is large and easy to read in daylight or at night (backlight can be activated easily for using in very dark environments like concert halls). I found mine used for under $100.00. It also doubles as a flash meter and it makes determining ratios very simple. Mine doesn't have the ability to transfer the data to the camera (very expensive Sekonic meters have this feature). Prior to owning this unit I had an older Sekonic L-398 analog unit that was incident only. It was very accurate and I never had an issue with it. Sekonic still sells this unit new and it is very popular with filmmakers.

Should I purchase better camera or better lens?

I have done it both ways, buy the good camera and make due with average glass and the other way around too. In my opinion, always buy the better glass. I have had many versions of Pentax cameras like so many other forum members and I can tell you that, like so many other K-01 owners, that little camera has impressed the hell out of me. It is my go to camera for street, MACRO, and portrait work, but you can't replace a camera with a viewfinder for sports and wildlife shooting.

Just my 2 cents worth,

Ray

It will fire, set the shutter speed, indicate in the viewfinder when it has recycled and it will provide auto-focus assist lighting, but it will not operate automatically. You will have to use it totally manually and the camera will have to be set to manual operation with you selecting the correct aperture. The screen on the back should provide you with the information you need to set the aperture correctly, but you will have to do some calculations.

Thanks Thoog. I did a firmware update on my K5 today and although I didn't remember it when I wrote this post, the K5 does the same thing. I am wondering if maybe it has something to do with the design changes they made to accommodate the Sony sensor.

I noticed something kinda unusual when I mount any of my many K-mount lenses (some M series and some pre-M). When you mount the lens to the camera it immediately stops down to what ever f-stop the aperture ring is set on. When you turn it on, or bring it out of sleep mode, the aperture blades snap to the wide open position. Any one else notice this? I haven't had any DA lenses on it yet so I don't know if it does it when they are mounted or not.

My K-01 arrived on Thursday of last week. Due to a busy weekend I only got a few minutes to play with it. Fortunately the Azaleas are in bloom here on NE Florida so I took a few shots with the 40mm XS and a few with a SMC-M Macro 100 f4.0 using the focus peaking feature. So far, I agree with some of your observations and not with others. To each his own. Here is a test shot of an Azalea that demonstrates that now famous K-01 IQ pretty well.
