Great photography on this thread everyone - speaks to the quality of both the lenses and the photographers here! This is a recent portrait of my grand-daughter with the K3 and FA 31 @f2.8. Dare I say it, the bokeh is "drool worthy!"

Great shooting again everyone. Here is a Cedar Waxwing from a recent outing. This is one of my favourite birds, common but somewhat elusive and very photogenic. K3, DA* 300 and HD 1.4X TC handheld.

Thanks John! The new Pentax TC is a real champ. It is "just the ticket" with the K3 and DA*300. I'm sure you will enjoy having one when you can pick it up!:)

Awesome Scissor-tailed Flycatcher John! I wish we had such birds here. I went to Long Point Provincial Park to catch some migrating warblers. Saw a ton of birds, but not a very photogenic day with overcast conditions, poor light and shy birds. Here is one anyway. K3, DA* 300 with Pentax HD 1.4X TC.

Thanks Travis. Some more from today. I came across this Hooded Merganser Drake while out looking for warblers (didn't find any of those!) This is the first time I've had a chance to photograph one of these. Tough exposures balancing the white markings against the darker colours especially with the sun coming in and out of the clouds randomly while shooting! I blew the highlights on the 4th one as a consequence but I liked that pose so included it anyway!

These roots stretch across the mossy covered rock face looking for the least foothold to support the tree. This was taken during a hike in Algonquin at an overlook rest point where we had lunch. I almost deleted the original colour version as the day was overcast and grey with flat light and the image didn't convey the feeling I imagined. When I converted it to B&W however the image seemed to pop, emphasizing the creepy "tentacle-like roots" and the tenacity of the tree against all odds! This was a simple monochrome conversion in Aperture with a tweak in contrast and definition. Taken with the K-01 and DA 21mm.

Thanks RockvilleBob. I did crop this photo, but mostly to go to a square format from the 3/2 aspect ratio of the original, just to get rid of some of the distracting background. The bird was only about 10 feet away, so it is not really an aggressive crop. I find that the new Pentax TC does not affect the focus speed of the DA* 300 at all. The lens focuses just the same as if there was no TC on it. I haven't shot many birds in flight yet. I think that will still be limited by the speed of the SDM focus on the DA* 300 which is not overly fast to begin with. The addition of the new TC does not however have any influence on the speed of the focus with the lens. I now have it pretty much mated on the DA*300 and my last few postings starting with some Turkey Vultures have all been taken with that combination. I think you have the Sigma 500 and it may focus faster than the DA* 300 for all I know. I see that Travis (dane.dawg) is posting some shots with that lens and the new Pentax TC. Perhaps he, or any others using that lens with the new TC could shed some light on that combination for you.

Thanks Stan - it's a golden-crowned kinglet. I would think you could see them in Pennsylvania.

Thanks Dave.

Thanks Jacco.

Thanks derekkite. For sure they are fast and skittish. You should see how many shots I have of empty branches or the bird taking off! The miss rate is high with these guys for sure, and they are really pushing the limits of the SDM focus on the DA* 300!

Thanks Driline!

Really out of my comfort zone on these "street" shots. I'm usually a landscape, bird, travel, family photo kind of guy - also not much of a city person - prefer the wide open areas! However, I was in Toronto on the weekend on the first warm, sunny day after a loooonnnnggg cold winter and captured these shots with the K3 and DA 21.

Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch - Welcome!
Every spring we are blessed with a migration along the escarpment!

Thanks swip. Great Snowy shots -surprised they are still hanging around.

Thanks Jacco. I guess I will find out how the IQ holds up at pixel peeping when I start shooting smaller birds when they arrive and I have to crop some more than I did with these bold vultures.

Some shots of the vultures in flight - VIF! Again, all taken with the K3, Da 300 and 1.4X TC.

We are in the thick of raptor migration here in Niagara. This is the first time I have had a chance to test out the K3 with the new Pentax TC on the DA 300. I am impressed, focus is just as if there was no TC on the lens, much improved over the performance of the Kenko I have! The images are pretty sharp too, and I am not appreciating any significant degradation in the image quality. Here are some shots of a Turkey Vulture. This guy was perched on a tree top just next to the brow of the escarpment I was walking along and let me get pretty close. Great shooting everyone!

@Jacco (TenZ.NL) Hearty congrats on your marriage and new home, exciting news for sure!!:)
