I cannot believe this was not answered yet. I'm sure you've already found the answer to the question but it seems there is no beep confirmation while in live view using manual focus. The best thing to do is use the info button to zoom in 6x.

I agree with Deedee. I grew up on the K-x and I never went past 800 ISO because I HATE GRAIN. Now that I have the K5II, I will pump it up to 1600 with no problem. I don't mind a little noise reduction in post. I use the 18-135mm and either my FGZ360 flash on camera with the stofen or off camera with a small umbrella at low light events that need flash. I wish I had a flash that swiveled, though. I've got one of those rogue flash benders that would really come in handy.

I just wanted to take a minute and just restate how awesome these cameras are. I have had my K5II since November of 2012 and since then, have taking thousands of shots. It still works like it did the first day I got it. I tend to "baby" my gear, but a month after I got it, I was attempting to take a picture of my family with the 40 mm 2.8 limited attached and had an accident. It being a prime lens, I could only back up so far, so I thought I'd go inside and try to shoot through a raised window. Of course, I only need an extra foot for perfect composition and to avoid getting the window frame in the shot. I was leaning on the window sill and resting my knees on an ottoman when I must have forgotten about gravity for a split second. I fell through the window, dropping my camera from about 3 feet up. It bounced around and barely had a scratch. I think the Pancake lens saved the mount that day.
In another clumsy adventure, I did a photoshoot, just days ago. I arrived at the location a few mins before just to scout out some ideal scenery. I found the perfect spot a few steps down from a fountain and began climbing back up the steps. I'm not sure if it was the skinny jeans or my lack of hurdling skills, but I found myself tripping over the last step and falling towards the pavement. My K5II was in my hand and I wasn't throwing it this time. I fell, catching myself with my left hand and then my camera absorbing the right side of my body's weight. It's a good thing these guys are made of metal.
A few scratches and a few tears, but this camera keeps on kicking. Thanks Pentax(Ricoh)!

I tried changing the color on the original and making it more vibrant, but I too found it more attractive in black/white. Added a dark vignette and it almost seemed like I was hiding in the bushes. Sharpened and adjusted clarity.

I wish someone would have mentioned debug mode. I've never attempted it before and sounds like it would have been useful.

I attempted to sell the 40mm, but I'm glad no one replied. I recently purchased the K5II and it's not only an amazing update from my Kx, but it focuses perfectly with the 40mm limited attached. I tried going back and forth between the kx and k5 with this lens attached and I could tell in the LCD during playback that although the K5II was sharp, the KX continued to backfocus. I contacted Pentax and they said that they were not aware of any issues, but they could calibrate the Kx with the 40mm if I wanted to pay for shipping and repairs. I laughed at the thought of paying for something that should already work. Instead, I'm selling the Kx with the kit lenses which still work fine.
Side note: Here is an example of the backfocus. I was using single/spot AF and aiming at the cheese balls in the bowl. |

I was two seconds away from moving to Nikon until the deal I found on Black Friday weekend with the K5II 18-135mm bundle. If it were not for this temporary drop in Pentax pricing, I would no longer be on this forum or a Pentax owner. I look forward to more competitive pricing.

Nobody seems to want to buy something they already have. The IIs is just different enough that it's intriguing.

Ok, so it's almost a year later, but I just checked this thread. So sorry. To answer your question, no. The kit lens is spot-on every time. Since I replied back in June, I've had a lot more time with the 40mm and found that it truly backfocuses a lot of the time. Even in daylight it will focus just a short distance behind my target. If I lift my finger and press halfway 1 or 2 more times, it will then focus properly.

My 40mm limited started BFing on my K-x after about 6 months. I guess I'm too lazy to send it in.

Have you noticed a difference using AF.S? Also, I was wondering if you have the same issue with the kit 18-55. That is, if you have one.

Picasa 3: Free download from Google
Don't know if you have used Picasa, but I love it for adding some quick grain and other effects. I do most of my editing in Lightroom and then export as a Jpg. Pull the pics up in Picasa and it's a great place to sort through finished photos as slideshows. You can also make collages and geotag.

I have the same setup and I have found that setting it to AF.S and lining up the shot down the middle before composing my will correct this most of the time. When it's on continuous, with the multi-point grid for focusing, it really doesn't look for the face unless it's in Live view. That's what I've noticed anyway.

Hi all. I've been an official pentaxian for a little over a year and have read posts on this forum for some time, but never thought about registering until today. Anyhow, glad I'm making the step and nice to meet you all!
