Mine crashes frequently. I'm thinking of reinstalling PSP8 but I really like some of the easy to use "make over features" in X3.

Also, as another option for the OP, I started with Photoscape. It's VERY easy to use and has a lot of options... and free.

Not even repackaging. I was returning a flash that wasn't firing as a fill flash as I needed it to. It was cheap so I wasn't too mad but it was worth a try. Anyway, I had everything in the package as it was when I bought it, took it to the counter and the lady didn't even open the box. She printed off an open box / reduced priced sticker and tossed it in the bin. It could have been a 2x4 block of wood in there

I don't have much need to go there and the store is a good 40 minutes from home.

Right, what I'm interested in is 1 good walk around. The 18-135 fits that bill. 1 good long range zoom, the 55-300 fits as do a few others. And one good portrait the da 35 or one of the 50s would be perfect here. I think, for now, that this is all I need.

Umm he didn't burrow into my head? I just want to check my facts before I get burnt on another purchase. I don't care what name or label is put on a product, if I heard / read numerous comments about the possibility of a company going under I think it's my right if not responsibility to do so.

Thanks for the link, it is ironic indeed.

Oh, I won't buy Sony if I don't have to. I've had a few bad pieces in the past and when they wouldn't stand behind their product it left a bad taste in my mouth.

As for letting a Sony rep get in my head like that, you're right, I shouldn't. I didn't know who he was until I walked away. When he seemed surprised that Pentax had just dropped new bodies and lenses I lost respect for him. If you're going to fight something you should at least know what you're fighting.

My only point is that there seems to be a lot of chatter. Is this a new thing? I don't know, I'm new to Pentax. It came highly reccomended from a friend and I'm ready to buy I just need to know ( in my mind) that it's safe.

Now I've seen a few threads here and there but at Frys on Friday and I wanted to look at the Kx and K7 as they didn't have a Kr or K5 in stock. The batteries were dead as they were the last time I was in. Some guy walked up behind me and said "Frys never charges their batteries but you don't want Pentax anyway" When I asked why he said "They're going out of business". I said oh really, why do you say that and he just went on to say that their sales were off and nobody was interested in them anyway. I let him know that they just released new bodies and a new, popular lens. He proceeded to show me his favorites which included a few Sony models, Olympus and a Lumix.

Sometimes when you're standing shoulder to shoulder with somebody it's hard to get a good look at them but he finally made me feel uncomfortable so I excused myself. As I walked away I noticed a lanyard flipped around backwards with a Sony badge attached and a Sony jacket in his cart.

So that left me wondering if he was just trying to promote some of his products or if there's any truth to what he was saying. I understand that a good camera is a good camera but if they did go out of production today, I might have a hard time buying tomorrow. Why? Well, I don't want to stock up on lenses and a body and never really be able to upgrade.

That happened to me during the HD DVD / Blu Ray wars too. I bought into HD DVD as at the time they had more titles that interested me.... A few months and a few thousand dollars later they stopped production. Movies could and still can be hand for pennies on the dollar and my old player, well, it's my garage CD player now :o

I don't have the answer to your problem, just curious where you're trying to shoot from. I work downtown and on my drive in I often see some beautiful, pre sunrise views of the city heading north on 65 but there's never a place I can find to pull over and get shots in. I thought about trying the Hardee's parking lot on Washington St right off of the 65 exit but I don't know if it would clear the overpass or not.

You're exactly right. I don't want to buy one that I have to replace later on because I settled. It's ALWAYS more expensive that way.

I'm now throwing another wrench into the gears. IF and only IF I can start picking up a lens here and a lens there over the course of the next month or two, I might MAYBE be able to pick up the K5.

Primes: DA 35mm or FA 50mm

Sorry guys, I made it an early night last night.

I might consider finding an A 50mm, I saw a few on ebay for around $50. That with a DAL 35mm seems like it should do the trick. My budget was $300 or so for this and I should be able to do both in that range.

I understand that the A 50 is MF and I think I'm OK with that so thanks for the idea.

As for flash, I will have to find a decent flash gun to use. With my Canon I picked up a decent, off brand E TTL flash. I will continue to use it but only as a slave type flash, I don't know that it would match with a Pentax, even in manual mode as the voltage may be different... I will research that as well.

Thanks guys for all of the tips. Sorry I didn't post my budget in the first post.

Going to put a couple lenses on my Christmas list so when I'm able to order my body ( leaning towards K7) after Christmas I'll have a nice set waiting.

If you had to do 1 prime which would it be? The 50mm 1.7 is quite impessive BUT I'm not sure how good it would be for stuff at home as I just dont have the room to get good distance. I think it would be excellent for street stuff.

What I've seen of the DA (L?) 35 has great potential, especially in my smallish home but is it going to be fast enough in a dimly lit dinner party or the like? Also, is it going to offer enough range for street work?

My thought process is... I can use a smaller zoom ( kit or 16-45) for home setting, use the prime for portrait work and both the prime and shorter zoom for street work. I'll have the 55-300 for long range work. I do a fair bit of all three of those groups.

I really wont be able to do a lot. I live very close to the downtown area and the sky lights up pretty well at night. Now if I'm out camping or something like that the ability would be nice.

I think I'll stick to my guns with the 7. I really REALLY wish I could do the 5 but it's still just too rich for my blood at this time.

I went back and forth on these two and finally decided the K7 would win... this is until yesterday I ran into the DFS issues. Sure, I'd seen it before but never full understood what it was all about. I don't know that I'll do a lot of exposures that are super long BUT if I do I would like to be able to fire off another shot right after if needed / wanted.

But my understanding of DFS is that if I were to do a 4 hour exposure, it would be a full 8 hours before the camera processed the one image? Does the image have to have the dark shot to work OR is it something that can be done in PP?

I understand that DFS can be disabled on the KR in bulb mode but not the K7. Should this be a deal breaker for someone that might use it "from time to time"?

Oh no, I'm still planning on the 35MM and looking at the 50 as well but I still need a shorter range zoom and a longer range zoom. We travel a fair amount and do a lot of different things.

Another thought, how would the Sigma 17-70mm compare to the Pentax 16-45? I got to thinking about what Rio Rico said about the 35-70 range and he's spot on, at least for me. I realize that it would overlap some with the 55-300 and the Sigma 70-300 didn't look all that impressive, at least to me.

The Tamron 70-300 looks decent. Thoughts?

Which one? I had the S1000FD before moving to the Canon SX20 is which was a light year better. Nearly a year later I wish I would have gone SLR instead of the Canon. K-r is one of my contenders so I'll watch for your review with interest.

K7 vs K-r

The weight is a non issue for me. I'm a big guy and actually like weight. If I do the K-7 it'll have a battery grip too.... that's another big bonus for me.. but I like that the K-r takes both battery types.

The bulk of my shooting takes place out doors. It it's inside it's done with lights, very rare do I shoot in the dark... except for trying to get that perfect moon shot :D

I have a budget of $1500 but that's a little flexible. I can do the K-r with DA L 18-55 AND ( bonus) DA 55-300 PLUS the DA 16-45 and DA 35mm. The 18-55 would likely go for sale and is of no concern. That package will run me around $1600 at Adorama. It's a bit more for the K-7 minus the 18-55 BUT it might be worth it to me.

Just have to wait out the holidays. We're a blended family with 5 kids. 4 of them chose to be born within a week of Christmas

K7 vs K-r

Thanks guys.

My current camera ( a superzoom) the Canon SX20 is goes to ISO 1600. Set to that on a 15 second shutter and a boost of exposure I can make the middle of the night look like mid afternoon if I need to. Some of the shots I've seen at higher ISO levels just get, hmm, grainy.

The WR and overall build quality of the K-7 wins for me. I'm always very careful but I've lost a lot of weight over the past 2 years and have been able to do a lot more hiking. Accidents happen, part of life... as is getting caught in the rain and liking pina coladas.

I don't know how important a higher level of ISO is to me because I've not used it and I'm not confident that I would if I had it. I'm going to keep researching as I have time to do so but as of right now I think the K-7 is winning the race to my credit card bill. The K-5 at roughly $1500 is just too rich for my blood.

Thanks JHD. The K-7 really seems like it's overall a better fit for me but I've yet to decide as I'm not quite able to flop down my card.. have to wait until the holidays. Hopefully the post holiday deals will decide for me.
