On Saturday I said goodbye to my trusty Pentax K-S1 after knocking it off a bridge, yes a bridge, a railway one at that.
I was out on Friday close to home trying a few attempts at a moving train, I took my camera and 2 lenses a 16-85 and 70-300 to weigh up what would be best suited. The wall on top of bridge itself is just over 6 foot so I found a bit of wood to give me a leg up, I took a few with the short lens then changed to the zoom then back and forth until I decided to change for the last time. This time though instead of climbing down with camera and lens I removed the lens and left the camera on top of the wall, I grabbed the other lens then went to jump back up............sigh, as I got back up the wood slipped and I reached out for the bridge wall.......any guesses ? yes my hand knocked the camera off the top for a 25ft drop to the tracks below. My fault entirely.

That moment in your mind when there aren't enough swear words in the world. Anyway, camera landed on the ballast and must have caught the bridge as it went down, the flash housing was knocked off and the camera body itself had landed face down with a lump of dolomite inside the camera, the mirror assembly was completely smashed along with the flash. I tried the camera and it still turned on....Pentax build quality!

I had a friend of mine who actually repairs digital items have a look and he gave me the news that I already thought, cost to repair far outweighs the cost of a replacement........bye bye Pentax, it's ended up in his parts bin.

I learned something last Friday, cameras come with straps for a reason.

Don't know why but I am tending to favour my old trusty Canon for slow shutter speeds in mixed light. My K-S1 gives too much shutter vibration which reflects in blurred images when used low down on a gorillapod. My latest Canon offering, I didn't think much of it but others thought different:

I've kept an eye on camerapricebuster UK where the K-1 had been 1599 since launch, after reading this thread I checked again and see it is now 1799, don't know when it went up though.

* just read in another thread that it went up a week or three ago

Problem with K-S1

Might as well add my 2 pence worth, I see dust spots at f8 mainly against blue skies, 400 iso seems to produce more noise than I would like and I was thinking of contacting that Dyson bloke to see if he would do a small hoover for camera sensors, with the constant use of the rocket blower my forearms are getting close to Popeye's. I tend to change lenses wherever I am, I don't look for an air tight lab environment so it's probably my fault and the fact that the 70-300 Tamron likes to collect specimens from everywhere it's been.

Good luck with your choice. I think it's a lottery these days for getting a "Good" copy of a lens, some people are pleased with their purchase while others are left scratching their heads as to why theirs doesn't perform the same. This is my second copy as I returned the first, this from me on another post on here.

On the plus side, the first lens was good for clarity & sharpness on anything up to 10ft away up to 135mm after that everything went downhill fast, 300mm looked like a foggy oil painting, the replacement lens is good throughout except when on f4, the higher lengths of 180mm - 300mm are very usable and surprised me when used on a tripod

The problem I have with this one and the previous one is that it won't AF between *135 - 160, the camera seems to lose touch with it and I have to resort to MF but I cast that aside for the image quality at the long end. This is a good lens on the K-S1 but you to have to be patient when editing to extract the most out of it.

* I tried the lens on a K-5 and the AF was fine, the AF issue must be related to my camera only.

You mentioned the loud shutter/mirror noise which I am used to with my K-S1, but have you tried at slow shutter speeds to see if there is any movement transferred to the images through vibration. I know this has been discussed on here with certain Pentax cameras and lens combos, just wondering if they ironed that part out yet.

I took my K-S1 with the Tamron 70-300 out today looking for early signs of this years fungi season, in previous years I have used my trusty Canon 600D with it's flip out lcd for this kind of work so today was a learning experience.......and it was, no twisty flip lcd, metering in dark areas way different to the Canon. I used on board flash with a plastic diffuser which produced results far better than I expected, just have to wait a day or two for more to pop up then go hunting again. A few from today:

I think I'm becoming lazy in my old age as I've been saving as jpeg only of late, I used to save raw+jpeg, use the jpeg to view and the raw to edit.

Since getting my K-S1 i have noticed that the jpegs it produces are pretty good depending on your camera settings, I've settled on Bright mode with -1 Sat, -1 Contrast, -1 Sharpen, Highlight correction on and Shadow correction off. I take the jpegs into CC2015, duplicate the layer and edit in the camera raw filter where I find the camera has done most of the work and I just have to refine little areas.
I did try a comparison starting from scratch with a raw file and comparing my edited effort with the in camera jpeg, 1 photo and 2 different outcomes, which looked better ? I suppose it was down to personal taste in the end.

Both images looked decent in their own right but again it came down to personal taste. Jpegs for now with the option to edit the file in raw is probably my route for now.

Thanks for trying......
The two lenses that I have had, and I'm keeping the second one were/are 618945/618948. Both resort to MF between 133mm - 160mm and ask you to input the focal length if you turn the camera on in this range.
On the plus side, the first lens was good for clarity & sharpness on anything up to 10ft away up to 135mm after that everything went downhill fast, 300mm looked like a foggy oil painting, the replacement lens is good throughout except when on f4, the higher lengths of 180mm - 300mm are very usable and surprised me when used on a tripod.
All I have to remember now is the missing 133-160mm AF.

I'll answer my own question from #16......
I took delivery of a Tamron 70-300 Di LD from SRS last Thursday, initial tests were how I remembered my old one....PF, not very contrasty and soft past 260mm, but I knew what to expect. I went out on Friday and encountered my first problem with it, when I turned it on it asked to input the focal length.......odd thing as the aperture ring was in the A position ! I started to point at this and that through various zoom lengths and encountered my second problem........the AF stopped working, the camera was set to AF on the body but MF was showing on the back of the camera and my F stop was showing as F - - and the aperture ring was still set at A, I pressed all the buttons on the camera but nothing happened, I had to pull the battery to reset the camera. This continued to happen over a dozen times over the weekend.

I sent an email to SRS explaining the situation, they replied by saying return it your own cost and we will check it for you.
It was then I noticed something else, i found out that found that the lens will not AF between 135mm and 160mm, if you half press the shutter and slowly turn the zoom ring AF.S is displayed until you reach 135mm it then changes to MF until you reach 160mm where it reverts back to AF.S. This happens no matter what AF mode you are in or whatever focus selection you have, I informed SRS of this and they said the will replace the lens if they can replicate the problem........my problem is what if they can't ?

Anybody out there had this kind of thing happen to them before with this lens or any kind of lens ?
* I did clean both camera and lens contacts with an alcohol pad to rule dirty contacts out.

----------------------------------------------------

Update

Today I received a brand new replacement from SRS...........and guess what no AF between 135mm - 160mm also if you turn the camera on between these zoom ranges the camera asks to input the focal length, it seems as though the lens loses contact with the body in this range.
I wonder if this is a bad batch because the serial numbers were only 3 digits apart or is it camera specific to the K-S1 with FW 1.10, one thing of note is that the image quality at 300mm far exceeds the previous lens, so much for Tamron QC. I don't know whether to risk sending it back again or just put up with it hoping that it isn't an internal issue that might get worse.

Still having fun with the K-S1 apart from yesterday when I decided to try a Tamron 70-300mm F4-5.6 LD Di Macro Lens on it, 90% in the bin and a few decent ones. Here's one of the keepers:

Glad you mentioned the 70 - 300 Tamron, I owned one 10 years ago which I used on my K100D, I found it very good between 70 - 250 after that things got a little too soft for my liking. I was thinking about getting a Pentax 55 - 300 but at the present 280 UK is beyond my reach, the Tamron is around 85 UK. The question would be is the Pentax 200 better than the Tamron ? or would I be taking a step back having got so used to the great images produced by this camera with my 16 - 85 attached.

Question to Pentax K-S1 owners shutter vibration

Had this issue for the first time today on the K-S1 with 16-85 lens, images taken where the camera picked 1/100 to 1/125 were blurry. I left the camera on auto iso 100-400 and the camera seemed to favour iso 200 at f5.6 giving me the 1/125 shutter speed, when i deliberately picked iso 400 at f8 I got 1/320 and no problem and again no problem with shutter speeds at 1/60. I know now to try and avoid the above shutter speed range.

Edit: ..............Just a thought but today I used the camera as body and lens only, previously following advice on here I had the QR plate firmly screwed on. I wonder if that could make that much of
a difference.

Mine arrived yesterday and does the job very well without the worry of damaging the lens when you have to push the original on......or having it fall off the minute you look away.
