Found this rusted float on a beach near Jacksonville, Florida. It begged me to shoot it with a fish-eye.

Hello all!

Love those shots from the Pipeline Masters Steve! Thanks for sharing!

And thanks for the shots of my home beach Nick.

I'm far away from there at the moment though. Got this shot of a Hector's dolphin on the west coast of New Zealand earlier this week:

And a few of his distant cousins at Bondi Beach a few weeks earlier...

Happy Holidays!

Stuart, which is about two hours north of Miami on the East Coast. It is just far enough north for the Atlantic waves to come in directly with no interference from the Bahama Islands (Which knock down most of the wave height for the surf hitting Fort Lauderdale and Miami).

Sports Florida Surfing Action

Just a tick over 70 degrees. I'm able to swim now although there's still a bit of shock when I first get in.

Thanks Ash, I'll look for it.

Those are still popular surfing areas, along with Sebastian Inlet. I like the way waves set up along the Space Coast. These photos are from an spot known by the locals as "The Rocks". From what I can tell they tend to have the largest waves of any place along the Florida coast. By the rocks are shallow and I've seen some riders come out of the water with some very nasty gashes.

Anything over 1/750ths and I'm happy. I often shoot with the ISO at 200 which gives a faster shutter speed. But I don't like the grain when its overcast or cloudy so I try to use 100 whenever I can get away with it.

Yes. He's one of the better locals here. I always make sure to keep the camera pointed his way when he's in the water. Here's the next shot in the sequence...

Thanks Tamia! You'll have to come down sometime to get out of the cold. You'd love all the water scenes down here We've got around here. I'll lend you my underwater casing if you want to try that!

Managed to get a few shots of the shuttle as it was lining up for final approach.

I was expecting to be able to get better results than this. In retrospect, I probably should have used a polarizer.

Nature Florida Manatees

This Florida state park is known as a refugee for manatees trying to stay warm during the winter. The water in Blue Spring comes from a subterranean source and remains at a constant 72 degrees year round. This draws in the manatees when the water in the St John's River drops below their comfort level. The typically gather in large numbers in the spring from November thru February.

I was lucky to encounter a half dozen stragglers.

Coming from an underground source, the water in the spring has a very low oxygen level and therefore the water remains amazingly clear. Swimming is allowed when the manatees aren't around, It is great for snorkeling and it is a fairly easy swim out to the subterranean source. It reminded me of the Arizona slot canyons, except it was completely underwater of course. Scuba divers are able to dive the entry to this - I think they can get to about 150 feet deep before
it becomes too narrow.

I also turned on the K7's video. It was set up with a 200 + 1.7 TC. Just finished up loading it...

Didn't have a chance to pan with the rocket since I was shooting the above posted photos.

Luckily, I turned on the video AFTER I finished swearing about the timing of the crossing boat!

Machinery Atlas V Rocket Launch

Stopped by the Cape today to photograph the Atlas V rocket launch today. This was an unmanned rocket. The payload includes the reusable
Orbital Test Vehicle (aka OTV-2 aka space plane). The OTV is about a third the size of the Space Shuttle. Since it is lighter, this rocket gets going much quicker than the Shuttle which tends to linger on the launch pad after ignition.

Pretty decent atmospheric conditions for shooting. I was 11 miles away (as close as the public can get) shooting over a lot of water so can't escape the vapor. Probably the best launch photos I've ever been able to get. Have to give all the credit to the new Sigma 150-500mm lens. It's wonderful!

Misc Space Shuttle Launch

I believe the pier is open for public. Lot's of folks watch from the beaches near there. They can't see the rocket until it clears the launch pad but they get a nice view once it gets into flight.

For anyone thinking about going to the next launch in April be aware it is scheduled for about an hour after sunset so effectively it will be a night launch. That means it is very difficult to photograph because there is no light on the shuttle which is atop very bright rocket exhaust flames. No way the camera sensor can pick up both.

Here's my suggestion for photographing it if you go:

I usually do a long exposure for the night launches and try to get a light trail of the shuttle's path from the launch tower arching into the eastern sky. You don't actually need to be anywhere near Cape Canaveral for this. Anywhere along the beach from Fort Pierce (about 100 miles away) north should work.

-tom

It isn't really deafening, but you do hear it. The slightly wierd thing is that it takes a little bit of time for the the sound to reach you at that distance. Then after another 10 seconds or so the ground begins to shake.

You can get a bit of sense of sounds in this video I shot (with the K7)

Hope you can make one of the last two (April 19th and June 28th). It really is an incredible experience. Also very cool how many great people I meet in the crowd. lots of serious amatuer photographers show up and we have some great conversations while waiting for the launch. Worth the drive down from SC!

Yes, these are from Thursday's launch.
