Taking Selfie with DSLR:
I am sure many veterans including amateurs will already be practicing this intuitively. Still I am no expert but wanted to share this as a short quick tips just for the sake of getting into this giveaway :). In this age of selfie, this tip might get some prominence. If you already have a wireless remote shutter for your low light shots (very affordable ones, just for a few dollars, are available all over the internet if you don't already have one), connect it by enabling the 'remote shutter' option in your camera setting.
Lift he camera up in your hands with the lens facing you. Point the remote towards the camera from your other hand and press the shutter button to release the shot.

Some precaution before the selfie:
1. Before you go for the shot, set your exposure before hand point to where you will stand and lock the focus if possible.
2. Feel free to increase the ISO to enable a quick shutter - to avoid any blur from hand movement.
3. If required enable the flash on a bright sunny day.
4. Increase the aperture size to increase the field of play so there is good coverage beyond you to cover your background.
5. Go wide angle on your zoom or use a wide prime lens.
6. Always try put your camera mode to 'multiple shots' so at least you can make few moments with your hand to make sure at least one of the shot has captured you in the proper frame.

Enjoy your DSLR Selfie shots!

My Christmas gift from self! backshell protective case for my backup camera :) Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Always trying to explore ways giving it the same level of treatment as my dear Pentax K-r. Getting a 50 mm lens will be great too as a second gift from 'Pentaxforums'. (The photograph itself was taken using Note 5)

@Nicolas06 , are the photos on flickr all taken with the 35mm? They all look well exposed and sharp. What is the aperture on this photo above?

Casual walkaround shots taken during July 2014!

---------- Post added 08-05-14 at 01:39 PM ----------

Hi @Nicolas06, thanks for the descriptions. I am no expert therefore my understanding with aperture was as I open it wide say f2.4 in this case I would have thought there is very shallow depth of field and have never tried to capture a complete scene till now - I was only going for this aperture, given the shallow depth, to take portraits or single objects.
I am just realising that I can also shoot streetscapes and night scenes but this brings up a question, where would your focus point be on your streetscape...!?
Secondly, in the second photograph where the boats are docked with mountains in the background - why did you go for f3.2, normally we would go with f8 or something around a small aperture..?

thanks for sharing all this as I am learning by seeing all this.

cheers!

Will K-50 handle 1080p videos at good frame rates including night videos? sorry for asking here, I will anyway go through the specs still I have no slightest idea as to what specs to look for in a DSLR to make sure it captures decent videos. I don't Kr did handle night videos or maybe I didn't know how to operate video on DSLR.
If not the kind of videos on a full frame DSLRs at least equivalent to some handycams will help. I am thinking of selling of my Sony handycam as well as I am not able to carry both along. So just thinking of a DSLR (well, not expensive) that can also manage videos.

thanks

thanks @THoog, I will go through the review as well.
One more quick question - Will the same version of Flash and trigger for Pentax work on Sony or Panasonic DSLR's? if you may know...

thanks once again

@Nicolas06 - good shots. Exif data would help.
What was the shutter speed and ISO on the night scene, was it on a tripod?

Hi

Can somebody suggest which DSLR in the Pentax's current lineup replaced the Pentax K-r. I am trying to replace my K-r to whichever model that superceded it (or equivalent).
Also, if that DSLR is capable to act as a handycam with 1080p capacity.

thanks

Flash photography question

Hi

Thanks all for suggestions.
@carrrlangas - your words '1/180 is plenty for most uses' is a real comfort as I am reading the other comments and inablity of Yongnuo YN-560 III to do this. Does this mean, that I can still freeze 'rain' shots like the ones you must have seen - night shots in rain and flash going from inside the umbrella where we see those rain drops freeze!? I am looking to play those kind of creative shots....
1. Can you also elaborate more on your last line 'If you use a compact camera with flash and the optical slave mode on the yongnuo youŽll can sync at the max shutter speed of your camera, really fun.' yes, I am looking for those kind of fun stuff.
2. How do I make the compact camera trigger and sync with my dslr to achieve that if my understanding is what you mentioned!?
3. Also can you suggest a few lines on how I can trigger the Yongnuo in slave mode to be triggered by the onboard flash ( I am asking this because I have not yet got hold of a trigger but waiting for the new one from Yongnuo awaiting launch and that I prefer to use the flash away from the DSLR body).

thanks

Flash photography question

Hi

This is the first time I am going to learn using an external flash on my Pentax K-r.
I have bought a Yongnuo YN-560 III and trying to start getting the hand of it.
I was reading about sync speed and so on... Somewhere I keep getting lost with the jargons. I spotted the following in one of the Pentax K-r reviews "sync speed is 1/180 seconds, though if an external flash that supports high speed sync is used, maximum shutter speed with flash is 1/6000 sec..". Can somebody help me understand this and how this applies to my K-r along with Yongnuo!?
Thanks in advance.

Hi
I am planning to buy YN 560 III flash. This has the inbuilt receiver. I am looking to get a transmitter to trigger this flash from my Pentax Kr. Which model of the yongnuo work with my Kr and YN560?
If I buy yn560 II and cactus triggers which model will work for my Kr?

I am amazed with the way the smartphone cameras have improved in the recent months. We all know, Samsung Galaxy S5 has a software feature which can focus after you take the picture and similar feature is picking up with other manufacturers. Recently Lytro camera made news with such a software feature which I am seeing the smartphone cameras to soon overtake this. Although this is a software feature - I am seeing this to improve going forward with optics improving along.
Google recently updated it's Camera app with something called 'Camera Blur' which captures the depth information from the site and allows us to change the focus in the picture. I am starting to love this as it has made me use my smartphone camera more than ever. The attached is one such image without any post editing applied. You can see it for yourself and share your thoughts please!

Since the same concept is (almost) being rolled out in very many mobile phone OEM cameras (HTC M8, Samsung Galaxy S5 and google's very own Google Camera with Camera blur) - if I project the maturity scale on these apps, I am seeing this end up in a matured state almost as near to this Lytro Illum. So this makes me wonder whether the price tag for this is worth it?
Also, down the road most camera giants would have already started working this (or similar feature) into their bodies and thereby bring the price tag for a similar product down. So putting a purchase decision on hold for now will be a wise thing to do now is what I feel.

Very sad indeed to loose someone so valued for this forum. I say this because of all that I am being taught in this forum by many senior members like Bruce 'Bramela'.
My respect and salute stand by his legend with awe for the dedication at his age for a forum like this.
I pray that his family gets the comfort and support from almighty above at this time of challenge. I am sure he has left behind his skills and his talents live among the very many members here.

I just recently started reading about this new camera but any research online fetches limited reviews about it. So may I ask the beloved experts here to share the drawbacks they think against a traditional DSLR.
All video coverage and promos on YouTube looks interesting though.
I did read somewhere the at the images are only 5 MP but maybe in a different context.
