If you have tested it and it works, that good. The fabric store I went to said none of their fabric pens would work on neoprene, that's why I used the sew-on labels. Thanks for the update.

Hello,

Just thought I would offer some feedback on this Ruggard lens case

I was looking to free up some space in my camera bag and one thing Pentax lens cases are, are bulky.

That's not a bad thing, but I needed more room in the bag.

I found the Ruggard Neoprene lens cases through B&H. Bought one, liked it, and bought a bunch more.

I'm happy to say their LPN-F25X30 fits most of my small Pentax lens collection,

DA 15mm F/4 ED Lens, DA 21mm f/3.2 Lens, DA 35mm f/2.4 AL Lens, DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens, DA 70mm f/2.4 Lens

The white tag is not part of the case, I had a local tailor add that on. That's my only issue with the cases, there is no exterior tag

to identify what lens is in the case. Nothing sticks to Neoprene, so a sew on label was my only option. That aside I would recommend

the product to anybody looking to free up more space in their camera bags.

I did also find the plug did not seat properly because of the cameras rubber plug door covering the 3.5mm jack, but did not include those in the results. Yes I used a continuity checker, and all tested good, with the exception of the 4th ring which showed no contact. Thanks for the confirmation on that.

So I just discovered the remote can be assembled wrong. I just took it apart and back together 5 times because each time it assembled differently. 3 times it would not work but twice it did. There is a two part button and slider which can be assembled in the wrong position and orientation. The button can be pushed and slide, but it won't operate the circuit board push button contact.

So I guess it works after all, just needs some random disassembly / assembly cluster-muckin-about to make work.

The problem is it doesn't work.

This is suppose to be a direct replacement for the CS-310.

The LCD shows the remote is plugged in, but simply does not work as its says on the box.
It won't autofocus by pressing partially down on the button and it won't take a picture at all under any settings.
Even with the lens on manual, and the camera set on manual and or bulb.

The only way I could get it to take an intermittent picture was to press the camera shutter release button half way down so it auto-focuses, and only then would the PK1 trigger. By having to touch the camera, this completely defeats the entire reason for having a remote shutter.

Has anybody else run into this? Does anybody else have a schematic on how the remote shutter release (or jack connections) are suppose to be wired. At best I'm guessing the wires are soldered on in the wrong order, or the extra black wire was cut off by accident. I could not get the black wire to register a connection to any of the shaft positions, so I assume its also cut at the jack connector.

question on how to eliminate lighting reflections from the eyes.

Thanks for the feedback. Pschlute, I see how Photoshop can edit the lights out, but in this case of very hard contrasts, its almost adds an evil effect to the eyes, kind of devil dog. I want to bring out more natural color of the eyes without washing them out with lighting effects. I haven't found a technique that works, but I'm resigned that I may have to photograph the eye separately and then Photoshop them in. Some days the ideas in my head just don't translate to the real world.

Bob256, I like it, it has the potential to work.

dms, gonna look those books up. What's old is new again, but the basics rarely change even with time.

Brian R, Diffuse the edges so the brain does not register the light as a soft box pattern, An additional diffuser could also help with overall spot burn. I think Adorama dis a tutorial like that on their youtube page, gonna look that up.

Thanks guys!

Thanks for the opinions, and pjv thanks for the link to Catchlights.
I understand why the lights look better at the 10 and 2 position, is because we are adjusted to see light coming from above. Seeing big softbox lights reflecting in the lower eye looks odd to me, and I've just started to hate seeing it. I also can't stand it if the light is softbox shaped, square, rectangular, octagonal or other. It is an effect that is just over used and I'm growing to hate it all together.

I'm curious if anybody has developed another photographic technique that provides the brightness, but does not provide the obvious reflection in the eyes.

Yes there is photoshop, but I have not been able to undo a soft box reflection out of a persons eye and not leave obvious traces. So I'm back to wondering of there are any tricks for photographing the model that does not show soft box reflections in the eye.

Hello,

One of my pet peeves is seeing a close up portrait and seeing the reflection of the lighting gear used
in the models eyes.

Question, is there a better technique of taking close up's that does not cause the gear to be reflected
in the models eyes?

Thanks.

question on diagnostics for 645z

Hello,

I may have an opportunity to buy a second hand 645z and some lenses from a retiring photographer.
I have no reason to doubt anything is wrong with the camera, but is there a diagnostic setting or something
that can check out the cameras functions and the camera give me an ok if everything is functioning normally?

The camera and lenses are just too expensive new, but even at his reduced price, its still a HUGE investment!
He states the shutter has under 9000 snaps on it. but is there anything else I can do to test if its fully functional
besides taking some pictures?

A previous cameras I owned had a diagnostic function but it could only be accomplished at a service center.
is this a possible option?

Thanks in advance!

memory card remaining capacity

A pie chart would show each picture and video format on the card, and it would show how much space is remaining according to each image format. I don't consider camera programming space limited, as its much easier for manufacturers to buy higher capacity memory than lower capacity. Actually even for consumers, lower capacity memory is going away in favor of higher capacity. 1, 2, and 4Gb memory cards have all disappeared from the store shelves in favor of 32Gb, 64Gb, and 128Gb.

Ok, thanks for the opinions, guess I'll bin this idea.

memory card remaining capacity

Hello,

So i was doing a bit of photo taking with my K-70, taking pics in jpg, dng&raw, and video and could not figure out how much space was left on the memory card.

I know there is a picture countdown timer on the lower left, but jpg space does not equal the same amount of space as dng&raw, and even less for how much video has been shot.

Computers show free hard drive space as a pie chart, and that has more relevance to free space to me than what is being shown just with numbers now.

Has anybody suggested a pie chart graph to Pentax before to show memory card remaining capacity? I suppose it would take one pie chart for jpg pictures, one for dng&raw pictures, and one for video, showing remaining time for the current video mode, and remaining time with the other video modes.

As far as I can tell there is nothing that even shows current used space by pictures or video. Is there a reason this is not being done?

Thanks in advance.

question on tele conveter lenses

Hello,

I have a Vivitar 2XMC4 AF tele converter lens.

Its been working great with my SMC 55-300mm lens for long range shots.

I had that crazy thought, can I stack 2 or more tele converter lenses (2 of the same type converters) for more range?

Yes I realize that there will be a loss of light and some visual details, but for the sake of distance, will Pentax Cameras (I have a K10D and a K-70) recognize more than one tele converter is connected and still auto focus?

Thanks.

Yes I have a ring light, and i had a small tripod setup, but it was mickey mouse (in my opinion) for repeat-ability. I've been looking for some other kind of small linear motion setup but have not seen anything I like, or that is under a grand.

Question on new Lenses

Thanks again for the advice and encouragement. Yes life is a learning experience, some lessons are easy, some not so much.
Based on the options you all mentioned, I decided on the SMC DA-15mm F4. Found one on ebay in mint / used condition, the close up pictures showing no flaws so I bought it. I saw the comparisons between that and the new HD lens, and I found myself liking the non HD better. The Peta Pixel web site had a few well done shots using this lens as well

I want to change the subject of this post slightly,

Does the collective minds have any suggestions for taking pictures with macro lenses? I've seen pictures of insects close up to seeing details in the bugs eyes and no idea how it was done. I've bought some macro extension adapters to use with my lenses and never got the results that others have. I've read of people making adapters that place two lenses back to back, but have never seen that actually done, or any of those adapters sold.

My interests are not just in insects, but also macro electronics, Surface mount components repair and modification need to magnify an area of 20mm square down to 1mm. I have not seen any Pentax lenses do that. Can the collective offer any advice on how to do that?

Thank you all for your advice, suggestions and opinions.
To answer some questions,
The reason why I like the SCENE functions is because I'm mot good enough to create the pictures I want using the other manual setting on the camera. When I see something I want a picture of, its now or never and I generally have not had the time to sit down, or go back to school on how to take pictures the old fashioned way, no offense intended. The SCENE functions are that intermediate step I need and (my opinion is) its what many other amateur photographers, or vacation only photographers need.
I did pick up the 18 to 135 lens with the body, but I found the SCENE functions takes better pictures indoors and low lighting with the non-zoom lenses so I was looking for feedback on those lenses.
I did get lucky with this shot of a water bomber from my 50-300 on a local fire nearby last week.

Again thanks for your help!

Question on new Lenses

Hello,
I'm an average photographer. I recently upgraded to the K-70 and also bought the DA35mm F2.4 and DA50mm F1.8 lenses.
I have been experimenting with the SCENE settings on the camera and quite frankly, this is the best feature Pentax has included on a camera.
Why Pentax hasn't advertised that feature and its capabilities more is beyond me. For years I've been expecting the cameras Auto function to be able to read my mind when I push the shutter button, and it just hasn't worked. If only more people knew what these features can do!
Now with the SCENE feature, its taking the pictures like I've always wanted and expected the camera to be able to do, I'm enjoying photography again.

I was looking for a wide angle lens, and I have the 10-17mm fisheye, but I'm tired of the fisheye effect.
There is the DA 15mm F4 which is many years old and no longer made, although I see a few old stock in B&H and Adorama, and used on ebay. The DA21mm is in the same boat.

Does anybody know if Pentax is going to expand the line of lenses of the mentioned DA35mm and DA50mm?

Thanks
