IRIX 15mm -- Pros and Cons

I think that you're asking too much of just one lens. Most lenses are corrected for infinity and perform accordingly worse the closer you get, unless they have very complex focusing mechanisms with "floating elements" or group focusing. Zeiss lenses are certainly built that way and is the reason why the K 28/2 also performs so well at all distances. Most lenses just focus by moving the whole optical assembly away from the film/sensor plane. The Irix has rear group focusing, which is excellent for weather sealing, since less external parts are moving relative to each other which could promote water transport through those surfaces, which I think is great, because many great lenses aren't weather sealed, and in this case I don't have to worry about it getting wet under the rain on some hike, except for the water beads that get in the way of the picture.
All lenses have pros and cons, and I think this one's got a lot of pros.
+ Weather sealed
+ f/2.4 for anything indoors and after dark.
+ Focus lock, infinity adjustment, infinity stop with ability to go beyond in extreme temperature cases where focus shifts.
+ Ability to use filters

- Weight perhaps since I have the Blackstone version, but it's f/2.4 and not f/4, so maybe Pentax should have a 15-30/4 with filter ring.
- Manual focus, but that can be a waste, too from what I've learned from my experience with the smc DA 15/4 (which also isn't WR) since I have to focus it on the corners in live view because of its strong field curvature.

So, and as far as macro lenses go, thay are corrected to perform best at certain magnifications. Perhaps just 1:3 to 3:1 or 1:inf to 1:1 and you have to turn them around to use them for greater than 1:1 magnifications. That being said, I think you should try out the Laowa 15/4 macro. Maybe it's a good middle ground and great to use for architecture on your K-3ii.

I would also suggest you show us with pictures what you're exactly talking about. Is it perhaps the chromatic aberrations at close distances? Can they be fixed in pp software? I think most of it should be able to be corrected.

One last thing, I warn you, that although it's a UWA lens, it's depth of field at close distances is way thinner than you might think, and things in the viewfinder look too small as to discern correct focus, so a tripod (not just a monopod) and absolutely still subjects are essential.
For less than still subjects there's always the option of continuously shooting while slowly turning the focus ring.

Remember to post some pictures so we can get a better idea of what bothers you.

Comparing costs of a FF setup

Did you read what I wrote? I said you can put together significantly cheaper line ups by using third party or used lenses. I thought it was very fair and no, Im not trying to sell anyone that Pentax is the best, but it does work for my needs. Thats all I can say.

So, a Nikon D810 plus a 14-24 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8 VR, and 70-200 f2.8 VR cost 9,184 USD together. A K-1 II, plus 15-30 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 costs 5784 together. This is based on current pricing on B and H. And unfortunately, the 14-24 is not stabilized, although all of the Pentax lenses are due to the presence of IBIS in the K-1 II.

To me, that is a significant difference with regard to price. It doesn't say that Nikon is terrible, that you can't put together a cheaper set up with Nikon using used or third party lenses, or that Pentax will work for everyone. It does say that Pentax is a reasonable value proposition for people for whom Pentax's camera and current lens line up works.

It does make me think, since I do own the Pentax lenses mentioned in my post that if I ever decided to do it, switching to Nikon wouldn't be cheap or painless...

Great question, guess we will find out once it's out. As far as I recall, the Theta V could do somewhere around 45 minutes of video.

Both cameras can be connected to a USB power source, however, so given that you have a battery pack or a plug, the recording time would only be limited by the available memory (if you aren't streaming).

(Un)popular Opinion: Pentax AF Doesn't Suck

There are a few folks on these forums that have valid criticisms of Pentax AF.C performance. Many, I would hazard a guess, criticise it too quickly in order to compensate for a lack of skill. Not all, but many. I say that with some personal experience, as I struggled with it too, and still do on occasion (despite being a reasonably competent photographer). But the fact is, skilful use of the camera can often overcome the limitations. I'm probably the forum's worst "birds in flight" photographer, but when I've followed the examples and advice of others here that are more experienced in this discipline, I've managed to get some very decent shots. That advice, incidentally, has helped me on more than one system - not just Pentax.

As for AF.S performance, I have absolutely no problems. Pentax appears to compare very well with other DSLR systems using phase detect AF sensors, and once AF fine adjustment is carried out for the relevant lens(es), accuracy is generally excellent :)

Reviews tend to focus on tracking or recently the graphics of tracking. It's understandably difficult but it'd be great to see more tests of low light performance, precision, and decisiveness.

After trying canikons the thing that stood out most was the "experience" of focusing. Beeps and viewfinder graphics were much crisper, giving a feeling of speed regardless of actual performance (which I didn't test reliably). Both sounds and focusing graphics are more fuzzy with Pentax.

I was left with the feeling that those aspects of the experience are tuned the wrong way.

Yes, that's understandable, because you compared Pentax DSLR to Canon DSLR, but you haven't experience mirrorless. It is just in the last two year that mirrorless finally catched up with DSLR (including Pentax). In fact, the X-Pro1 and XT-1 and all mirrorless cameras that came along, were worse than the Pentax for Autofocus even for stills, but the differences between Fuji , Sony and Pentax was that Pentax has no marketing, while Fuji and Fuji were doing a good job at training brand "evangelists". And even in 2019, some cameras AF sucks, and they aren't cheap: GFX50S, GFX50R, Hasselblad X1D (using CDAF) are a hit & miss. Even the A7III can be slower to AF than a Pentax Kp/K1 in low light, but Sony takes care of the marketing, while Ricoh does not.

Of course Pentax AF doesn't suck. You have to pick the right tool for the right job......and don't believe everything you read online about Pentax, without a hands on test of your own. Unrealistic expectations lead to predictable disappointment.

It's an overstated myth that pentax has terrible AF, especially with the modern KP/K3II/K1. In fact AFC on the KP is so good I use it with barely any issues at all.

Sure pentax doesn't have a rival for the 1ds or D4 but those cameras cost more than a used corolla.

I tried the Nikon 850...it's a large heavy unit--pics were not an improvement over my K-1 and in fact, felt less substantial--more plasticky and costs $1,000 more....Olympus are good, but they're also 4/3rds sensors...state of the art but small sensors nonetheless with less resolution power.

Lumix (Panasonic partnered with Leica) has a new mirrorless T/L Leica mount camera, but the body alone costs 600 more than the K-1 ii and, it only sports 24mp.

So Fenwood--I have seen, I have touched and I have shot others--for the money, for my style of work and for the inherent quality of lenses and legacy compatible glass, Pentax wins .

What else you got? Reading stats alone is very misleading. In the late 1960's American muscle cars had Hemis and 500 hp engines, yet sports cars of that era (Porsche, BMW's etc), with much less on paper, were the more balanced vehicles....think about it and then tell me your going to leave Pentax because of these offerings. In my opinion, Pentax wins the Feng Shui harmony battle with any other marque except Leica.

I have checked out those systems and am underwhelmed. Not that they don't have some strong points. We had a discussion in other threads comparing, which was posted by someone considering them. I also have a friend who shoots with a very recent Oly model and lens, an f/2.8 all-around lens which is remarkably small, but with some downsides compared with APS-C DSLRs. I have done some shooting with his gear. Also looked at the Fuji APS-C system. I invariably have found I like my KP's controls and feature set better.

I disagree. The pricing for Pentax gear is among the best values to be found. There is absolutely no comparing the Canon EOS 200D AKA EOS Rebel SL2 with even the Pentax entry-level K-70, which is priced in a similar range here in the US. The K-70 offers WR construction, thumb and finger 2-dial operation, a professional-level expensive pentaprism VF with 100% frame coverage, 14 bit RAW capability, pixel shift technology, and much much more, let alone comparing it to a Pentax body of pro-grade magnesium alloy construction and controls set like the K-5 II or certainly the very advanced-featured KP.

To get a 2-dial design and WR construction in a Canon DSLR, the price starts in the $1,000 USD range for the body alone, and likewise another $1,000 for a lens having WR construction.

Coming out with a new DSLR model every year does not guarantee an enhanced interest in the general population, or an upswing in the market for used lenses.

We have come to an era of diminishing returns in new models, so there is and should be a longer time gap in their appearance to bring any meaningful advancement at all.

On-line shopping, including such as Amazon, has greatly reduced the presence of local camera shops. I used to buy Pentax cameras and lenses right here in camera shops that no longer exist. The department-store type appliance establishments still remaining primarily handle only the fastest-moving biggest brand names and then their lower class of products.

I hate that Sigma and Tamron have abandoned Pentax as a mount for newer glass. Pentax mount glass costs more on comparable existing pieces. And everyone wants to abandon classic mounts when they go to mirrorless. At least Pentax is backwards compatible.

The purchasing slump you see is probably due to economics. My wife and I are paying $748/mon more for health insurance, with near identical coverage, than we were in 2017. I had cancer and she has asthma. We have two aging dogs one of which has diabetes. Property taxes are rising and infrastructure failing. The people making $50 - $200K/year are getting squeezed here in the US. So, fewer people indulge and splurge in their hobbies or small businesses.

Then you're not pricing it right...Example: I sold my K-3 on eBay this summer for $420. Sold a 16-46mm lens for $125 and a K-50 for $240.00. Those were reasonable prices. I also recently bought a new in box K-5 ii with a 18-55mm kit lens for $420.00. Sold my K-1 ii with FA 18-105mm kit lens for $1,800 with 1484 exposures on eBay while it sat in the marketplace for 2 weeks with no offers. Bought a K-1 body only (missed FF-had nice FF glass) for $1,180.00 with 1700 exposures. I frankly prefer the K-1's renditioning for my purposes over the accelerator unit biased Mark ii. With the 1.51 firmware updates, the K-1 is fine, plus I made up the loss on the back end.

Look, the only used bodies that have appreciated are the K-3ii bodies. They are still selling new for over $800, with the 18-135mm DA kit lens, it's nearly $1,200.00. How do I know? I have 5 of the most recent Pentax bodies in my stable (see below) and I keep up on pricing. If you think Pentax depreciates fast, check Canon and Nikon gear goes right into the sink....Sony A7 ii bodies for $800? those were $2,000 new.

I agree with most members here: Investing in photographic equipment is not to be based on re-sale....It's based on personal or professional use. If I upgrade or want a particular feature set, I'll buy it. When I sell it if I usually break even at best or lose $$$, I check it off to using the equipment and having the legacy being the images I took.

True, up to a point. The trouble with people feeding wild animals is that it introduces food that is not a part of the animals natural diet and that can have health consequences. They can also become dependent on humans for food. That means that if there are food shortages that they may have trouble finding food because they lose the habit.

Best to leave them be so they do what they need to do.

This is EXACTLY where I was hoping Ricoh would take the theta. The bump up to 1" sensors will almost certainly have this cam punching far above it's price point. From where I'm sitting it looks like the best 360 cam under $2,500. On top of that, this is probably the smartest camera outside of a smartphone.

If you are using old 67 lenses, you haven't made much money for Pentax in the recent years, Pentax can complain about you.

How many mega pixels do you need? Because if only it is about to feel that companies are making new products for you to be confident, then how confident will you be once the 100Mpixel is released? Will you be worried because there is no 200Mpixels camera in the roadmap?

I couldn't agree more with twilhelm above. I still shoot with my Pentax LX and ME Super film cameras and if I head off on a photo trip, more often than not I have both my Pentax digital and film with me. As such, I have a carefully curated selection of lenses that I can use on both. That means having an aperture ring. Obviously it doesn't always work (especially ultra-wide) but more often than not I can make it do. In addition to a nearly complete collection of M lenses, I have the FA28, FA35 and an FA50 that see the majority of use. I probably will not buy the "new" 35, but would certainly welcome a careful re-introduction of the FA prime set. If Ricoh/Pentax do so, I might be included to upgrade several of my FA's to the re-vamped lenses.

I stated in another thread, 35mm isn't one I tend to use, so I won't likely purchase this one. But I applaud Pentax/Ricoh for bringing this out. There's absolutely nothing wrong with re-introducing a good piece of glass with a price that is accordingly matched. I personally hope they put an entire line out of revamped FA lenses, 28-35-50 and even a 135. There's nothing wrong with having options.

People complain about lack of lenses, then complain about lenses that are produced. SMH
